Getting Organized : Proper Workflow Structure In Your DAW 

In this episode, I go back to the basics - getting your DAW organized and ready for inspiration.
KEEP YOUR PROJECT MANAGEABLE
Setting up a proper track structure will go a long way to keeping a session moving and help get your creative ideas flowing and onto "digital tape", it will also allow you to quickly tweak your mix while you go. Having your tracks in groups and color-coded keeps things manageable.
I've had projects where 120+ tracks have been sent and when they are loaded into the DAW which is daunting at first glance. If you don't organize your tracks mixing is extremely time-consuming and difficult. By breaking everything down into specific components, that feeling of chaos is removed and your ability to focus is locked in and ready to get to work.
SETTING UP YOUR STRUCTURE
STEP ONE: Create your Groups
Place each instrument/part into its relevant group.
* Drums (Kick, Snare, Hihat, Toms, Crash, Ride, etc)
* Percussion (Any percussive element goes here)
* Bass (You might have several bass parts or amped and DI'd splits)
* Guitars
* Keys
* Horns
* Vocals
* FX (A repository for all FX. echo, verb, sound fx)
STEP TWO: Move all parts into a relevant group
Within each of these Groups, add all relevant instrument parts.
Having all parts in their respective groups not only allow you to work quickly, but it will also provide you an opportunity to set up your fx, eq, and panning.
STEP THREE: Color-coding
The second step is that I will color-code each Group and parts within that group. Having each Group and related part color-coded will help you navigate quickly while also keeping things visually manageable.
These three steps will help you work more efficiently and effectively. Ideas, inspiration, and creativity will increase by having everything broken down into bite-sized, easy-to-manage groups.
