After yet another shoot where I swagger in and sling a camera around looking like I know what I’m doing then watching my footage, as usual, turn into out-of-date cottage cheese in the edit, it’s time to wise up on the fundamentals. What a great video Tom! Attending the University of RU-vid means endlessly sifting through information from people often as clueless as me so once again, I’m back with Tom Antos as my Sherpa. I’ll be buying both of these cards and learning how to do it properly whilst revisiting this tutorial amd having a proper good word with myself in the process. The term ‘guiding light’ has never been so appropriate.

Hi Tom, great video - love all your vids, and thank you for always sharing and for the insight and time you spend making these pictures and tutorials. As a couple others have mentioned, and I’m sure you already know, but since our fellow filmmakers watching will undoubtedly be buying these expensive but necessary little cards/charts (or their passport versions), we’ve gotta be careful not to touch the color chips by hand and keep them out of the sun, since any smudges or transfer of oil from the fingers or fading could result in their early demise, leading to a not quite spot-on color balance. A small scratch the size of a razor cut or slight scuff could throw them off. Also, less important here where we’re just going off the middle gray, but also important to ensure that black on the bottom (or any of the colors) have even lighting - no reflection or glare, especially when using the chart for color matching that palette in Resolve, etc. Again love the informative video and all your videos, you’re a big part of my choices and education, just want to make sure other fellow filmmakers & videographers or folks just starting out who are spending big $ buying these lil’ charts take good care of them so they last a long time. Thanks brother Edit: spelling error

I've been using X-Rite Video Passport Color Checker for the last year or so, and its awesome, as you shown in this video. My tip for you about shooting SLOG2 or 3 in a Sony camera, when it comes to exposing correcting is: Always expose your subject to 70 IRE beacause middle gray in SLOG lands in the 70 IRE valeu, and not in the usual 40 value. And by doing so, you'll get a +2, or +3 stops over warning in your camera and that's ok. Try out yourself and you'll see. Works like a charm when you bring thing to the edit room. Cheers! great video btw

I just bought one of the cheap color charts on Amazon but I haven't had a chance to use it yet. I had a feeling that somehow the gray area on the card was supposed to be used with zebras but I hadn't heard anyone talking about that. Thanks so much for your video! Usually once a month I film these little panel discussions with about 5 people and I use 3 Canon cameras and so far I can never get the colors to match between the 3 cameras. Next month I'm going to try using the chart to set my exposure, and make sure I get a shot of the chart recorded in each camera so when I go back and edit maybe I can make them match. Thanks again!
