Morning temperatures are in the 60s (F) and at night it drops down to the low 40s (F). It is now time to make my annual move of my cactus plants from outside, into my small greenhouse and some in my garage.

Yes, its that time!!! Oh what we do for our plants!!! I usually start prepping in September. Wood cut and split. Everything moved in. And if our temps drop too bad, like polar vortex below zero, I will pad the windows and bring in the delicates . Hope we dont go that low this year!!! Looks like you are prepared!! And your plants will love you!!! Thanks for sharing Ana!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks ,have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🌸🌹🪴🌻🌿🌾🌳💐🌴🍀🌱😃👍

I live in Malaysia. Its now Early December so quite near mid-winter. My Cacti actually seem to be most prolific in the winter, more flowers more growth! Steep learning curve, the Temperature is about the same all year.

Nice video on greenhouse. I moved my cacti and dragon fruit plants into the house. Last year plants died in garage because weather got too cold last week of winter in New York City.

Oh, I wish your winter will not be too cold this time. But at least indoors you have peace of mind that your plants won’t freeze this time. ☺️ Good luck!

Part of me is beginning to hate columnar cacti precisely because of how fast they grow and how quickly they become difficult to manage. I wish I lived somewhere warm where I could grow them outside all year round. My San Pedros are a nightmare. They just won’t stop growing. 😭
@CactusCaffeine
@CactusCaffeine 9 месяцев назад
That for me is a good problem to have. 😉 👍🏼 It is like me with my opuntias. But you can propagate faster, give some to friends or even sell the cuttings. Many people are interested to get a hold of San Pedro cuttings. Planted ones can be very expensive here.

I'm in Wisconsin, so all of my cacti have to come inside. They are currently in my basement under a T5 light, but I don't like the setup. I'll be moving all of them into a backroom of my house with better grow lights tomorrow. I have a lot of seedlings that are very slowly growing too. I need to make my backroom a dedicated plant room instead of the room where I put things to forget about them.

You have done a great job balancing your collection with the space available to overwinter them. I know that there have been some failures, but it all looks good to me.

Hi Bill!! How’s your indoor setup? My plants actually grow faster under grow lights in my garage. They like the temperature in there right now. Constantly in the 50’s..

I am around 35 to 45° at night and 60 to 70° days outdoors. Generally cold here is in Jan and Feb. My last water was mid October, and I have the lights turned down to about 10.5 DLI for 8 hours. My summer days are 22.9 DLI for 11 hours. Basically, I measure the amount of plant seen light for a second X the length of time the light is on in hours to get the daily average. That figure is the DLI (Daily Light Integral). All of this is interesting to work with, and I have had several discussions with Cactus Joe about DLI. Are you familiar with the system?

As a fellow desert dweller, I really appreciate your videos. This is my 1st winter w/ my succulent collection. In Phx, Az we are still around low 40’s. I have moved my baby cacti, and cuttings inside. I am keeping tract of the night temps. When do I need to start being concerned about winter protection for my outside plants? My little patio is in complete shade all day as it is North facing and the winter sun has moved more South. Behind my apartment building. I do have 1 huge potted Aloe. Cover that with/ burlap? Styrofoam cups on the tips of my Silver Torch cactus? I did keep my sun shade cloth up as I heard it helps keep out the frost a little.

I believe winter in Phoenix is not as cold as our winter here in Las Vegas. Our winter temperatures can go down in the high 20°F with occasional snow. I would only be concerned if your temperature is consistently below 40°F for several weeks. Otherwise, I think they would be OK by just throwing a burlap over them when you get near freezing temperatures. But this only applies if you have the desert type of cacti. 🙂🌵 Good luck and enjoy the hobby!

In the previous years, I started taking my plants outside again around March. Our coldest month is January and early February. That’s when we usually experience light snow though it passes quick. 🙂

@cactusjoe 9 месяцев назад
@@CactusCaffeine ok, thanks Ana, here in southern Germany January and february too are the coldest months. But my dormancy period unfortunately starts already in late Oct/early Nov amd usually last until mid/late March. Freezing temps we can still get way into April. Enjoy your weekend ahead, take care and best wishes! Season's Greetings and a Merry Christmas to you and your family, Ana!

Many aloes can take the cold. I would only protect them during near freezing temperatures. I’m not familiar with the care of the T-Rex aloe, though. Good luck! 😊

Hi Ana, do the growing lights that you have in the garage provide some heat to the plants?
@CactusCaffeine
@CactusCaffeine 9 месяцев назад
No they don’t. These grow lights that I have set up give off very little heat. The heat is very minimal compared to the size of my garage. Maybe if these grow lights were inside a tent then the light heat would make a difference. 😊

I don’t have a greenhouse. I’m in north Texas and temps have been fluctuating. Most of my small collection are indoors now. The larger specimens are still outside I just cover with blanket if needed. Is it bad to bring my small ones inside for winter? They’re by a window so they get great light and our indoor temp is usually mid 60s F.
@CactusCaffeine
@CactusCaffeine 9 месяцев назад
Bringing them indoors is not bad. It is necessary if you get very cold winters. Just make sure they still experience the colder temperatures so they can go semi-dormant at least, it helps them flower better in spring. You may need to give them a sip of water if you see them shriveling up too much. At 60’s they may not go fully dormant.

Hi ana. Just recently saw your video, subscribed! Coz i know you can advice me and your a filipino.. 😊... Ana suculent mga plants ko. Bago lang ako nag cactus. I have 2 cactus bough recently. Salamat po ..hope you can advice me
@CactusCaffeine
@CactusCaffeine 9 месяцев назад
Hello and Salamat po for subscribing. 4 to 10°C is still ok for most desert type cactus. It depends on what type of cactus you have and if they are already mature. You can send me some pictures in my FB messenger or in Instagram. 😉
