In today's video Heather and I get things all set up for cutting up our firewood... It seemed real easy at first then things went not so well. We did eventually get things set up though.

Saw an old fellow years ago running one of those and he had run out of gas, so he jacked up one rear wheel of the tractor and got a few of his boy's to spin the wheel and continued cutting.

I use to cut wood by the truck loads with a buzz saw just like the one you said recently bought. The saw belonged to my father in law and the whole families got to gather to cut firewood. In just a few weekends had enough firewood to do 5 households all winter. That was a lot of slab cutting. I'm guessing between 100 and 150 cords of wood. It was a fun event as it was a family outing kinda miss those days.

Back when we had several small local sawmills we could buy huge bundles of those slabs for $5. We would take them home on a trailer and cut them up like that. Not quite as good as split oak firewood but much cheaper and easier. If you had a couple of links that would clamp on the front axle and bolt to the saw so they could float up and down on a pivot bolt on each end and make one of them adjustable setup would be very easy every year.

My grandfather use to put honey on the belt to stop it from moving off the pulleys. We use to cut a full 10 ton with his setup but pops was perminantly cemented to the ground and put the fire wood needed to cut to around it but good on you for using it best ability as we throw we learn new things everyday

Hello Malcolm, How are you? Somebody was here the other day and mentioned the same thing about honey. I wish we didn't have so much frost or I would cement this to the ground as well. Thank you Malcolm. You take care ttyl... Cheers :-)

You could take some angle iron and make brackets that just mount up to the front axle of the tractor with an adjustable turnknuckle. That would allow you to have it hooked to the tractor with just a few minor adjustments to keep the belt aligned. We did something similar with our old non-styled JD "B" and a hammer-mill we used to grind grain. Great video. Cheers :)

Hi there, when I was younger my uncle, my cousin, and my brother, and I would use a wood sawbuck every year to cut firewood. When my brother and I were very young, i would be the off bearer and my brother would stack it in the trailer. I think about it today and wonder how we kept all of our body parts lol. We had the sawbuck on skids and would change locations when we ran low on wood to cut. We'd pick a fairly level spot for the saw and then use four car axles, one on each end of each skid beaten into the ground to hold it tight. We used a farmall H to power the saw and a farmall F14 to haul the trailer full of wood from the mountain. After a little practice i got pretty good at lining the old H up to the sawbuck, I would put a half twist in the flat belt and back up until the belt was semi tight, set the brakes and start to work. My uncle knew how to sharpen the circular saw, being careful to not take to much out of the throat, sharpen the teeth and put set back into the blade. I can still see him bent over the blade vice grips in one hand and an adjustable wrench in the other when he was putting the set back in the teeth. Those days are over now, my brother passed away in 12 and my uncle in 03. Besides I'm getting to old to be staggering around one of those saws anymore anyhow.

Ive repowered a couple of these old tractor powered saws with 8hp briggs useing vee belts and a centrifugal clutch. Self contained without the lineing up problems and maybe a bit lighter on gas.(I'm guessing) I remember when I was a kid in the fifties my father used one of these powered by a forty horse Fordson major. Fuel was cheap then but that much power is not really needed.

We used one like this when I was growing up. I think it would be much easier if you put the slab on the shelf and slide it down as you cut. You are doing it the hard way and maybe unsafe. Great video about the setup.

I stand corrected. I now see that the shelf extends on both sides which I did not see initially. You are doing the the correct way. Sorry about that.

Thanks Ben, Yeah it sure makes short work of slabs... Plus no bar oil wasted or mixing oil, Just a little gas in the old tractor and sand don't seem to bother these blades much either, It just makes sense for us. Thanks again Ben, You take care ttyl.... Cheers :-)

Well David... I should start being careful then. I'm 51 years old and started using my dads saw like this one when I was 11 years old...Hmm that means I have 40 years of experience on these saws. How about you??? I think I am good. Cheers.

I can remember hearing them saws running many years ago. You could hear'em running miles away, but that was of course before all of the noisy cars were around. What kind of chainsaw is that your using? I take it that it's electric but looks like a regular gas chainsaw.

you have give the wrong info on the belt safely and all about the lacing alligator lacing is a different lacing the the clipper lacing you have i have a friend works on conveyor belts he was pulled in on a alligator lacing the was installed wrong and had taking the snub roller bearing out he was very lucky to be able to keep his hand the surgeon said more likely to be removed for the damage was done to it they taking him out of the surgery they say could not be saved they surgeon was not going to take it off that night has been long day for both the surgeon and my friend the exit day they were getting him ready for the surgery one of the the surgery team was up with him and my friend said that his figures feeling like they were in a ball and have been mixed up and he could move them too the surgeon came in and hour later and had to really explain to him their nothing their any more but he did take a very sharp needle and pick all of his figure and hand. the had to bind fold him before that each day they did it he still have his hand and it does work for him has not nerves or blood vessels in his lower arm and hand

Sorry to her about your friend. But back when I grew up these clips were called alligator clips, Not to be confused with the younger generation who thinks an alligator clip is to hold something to get stupid while smoking....And if you follow the link here you will still see they are sold as Alligator clips www.ebay.ca/sch/i.html?_nkw=flexco+alligator+lacing&clk_rvr_id=1368431300830&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwrf_kd7J1wIV0F5-Ch1VFwXoEAAYAyAAEgILdPD_BwE&geo_id=34636&MT_ID=16&crlp=174877023271_1009&rlsatarget=aud-115579262894%3Akwd-19017227322&keyword=flexco+alligator+lacing&abcId=513836&treatment_id=7&poi=&adpos=1t3&device=c&crdt=0&ul_noapp=true I am almost 50 years old and have been around these belts all my life and anything is only as safe as the person using them.
