@madseasonshow An entire generation of people have no idea that video games ended around 2007 when the corporations took over gaming. these people are clueless the golden age is done and that they're playing glorified mobile games which are only fun because they're addicting - like gambling. They just don't know that a time existed before loot boxes and gambling mechanics and daily quests and unfinished games. It's impossible to convince them that skins in video games ruin the game.. so don't worry about the corporate shills. let them play their Diablo 4 FILTH, let them drown their time in Candy Crush Blizzard aka Retail Wow. When we end this corporate regime and starting making actual games again they'll come and apologize to you. There will be an 'oh shit' moment for them when their brain enjoys natural happiness instead of manufactured brain happy chemicals from corporate colors on a screen - aka Diablo 3, Diablo 4, Diablo Immortal, Retail WoW, Stracraft 2. There's an army of people that experienced the same phenomenon as you did when blizzard was good. WoW vanilla / classic is much better knowing you exist out there and saw the same thing we did. we know what glory is and we will never be happy until we return to that video game golden age. These people that give you hate do it only because they weren't there and saw what we saw in vanilla and diablo 2. If you charged first against the armies of Mordor, I'd follow right behind you. You are a legend. Fuck the haters.

Your analysis was likely too generous in response to the "From Your Average Reddit" post. It did serve as a useful prompt to create some very nuanced and complex discussions which is not normally found on Reddit...ironic. Most people will not consider a creators intent behind making critique videos perhaps because they themselves cannot comprehend criticism and critique coming from a place of wanting it to be better because you love it.

i’ll probably never give up on wow I have played around 19 years now. What I did give up on many years ago was progression. I played the game for fun at my own pace. I still login a decent amount of hours per week around 20 or so give or take a few. it’s one of my hobbies at this point something that at the end of the day when nothing else is going on I can jump on to mess around for a little bit. It’s something that if I go into work late, I can tool around on the computer for a while , maybe pick up a new transmog Or tanker around with whatever event might be up. Playing like this, I never get burnt out it’s always giving me some measure of enjoyment.

Mr retcon Chris metzen ruined this game with all his retcons and bad additions, he created a trend that every writer after him abused

Hi Madseason, thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings. As a longtime viewer, it surprised me to hear about the negativity that came your way, even if it's less than 1% of your viewer base, because you always come off as an even headed and fair guy. I guess that's just the nature of having millions of people see your stuff, you're definitely going to come across some crazy. I'm sure I'm not saying anything you don't know, you said the same in your video, I guess I'm just trying to show support, man. You're one of the few RU-vidrs whose new videos actually gets me excited. It's not just "oh, new vid," when your content pops up in my subscriptions, its "oh shit, new Madseason vid, gotta set some time aside take his editing in." And man, I don't even play WoW, I just like the way you talk/ present it. Anyway, I'm rambling here. I mean, you are the guy who passionately made wow videos, stood as a shining beacon of positivity in perhaps the worst era of the game in BFA, but then as soon as classic launched you did a 180 and became quite insufferably anti-retail. You're within your rights to do that of course, if you don't like a game you shouldn't be supporting it, but it was quite clear that you were revelling in the opportunity to profit from wow but also hate on it as well. It was calculated, sudden, and contrasting your earlier videos to your mid-life videos, I think some criticism towards you was earned.

It's hard to overstate how important your videos about the level boosts were to me. I was so heartbroken about Blizzard's decision, but much more so by the community's seemingly-majority approval. Where did the amazing community of 2019 go? You voiced my exact feelings in a much more articulated way than I ever could. And for us old school boomers that love the game for the gameplay, it really saddened my heart to watch Blizz head in that direction, but your videos gave me some solace, feeling less alone. As for haters, I think it's pretty much inevitable. One could even say that if you don't have any haters at all, you're probably too bland. I have no desire to be a "content creator", yet even my latest video on my 1-60 Nudist hardcore achievement run (Xaryuenjoyer 3) on my microscopic channel got some random hate comment. So I guess it's all par for the course, sadly. Oh, and you have a tiny cameo in it, a very small tribute :) Thanks for all your content, you are the voice of more people than you think!

I was there on the first day back in 2019. IMO, what happened was the idea people had in their heads about the game met the reality that most of us are in our 30s and 40s now, and many of us have spouses and/or children who need attention. Not to mention jobs, friends, etc. After going through the grind once or twice, people were ready to skip it. We probably would have gotten to that point sooner if Covid hadn't kept people home for a year. That said, I do wish that Blizzard hadn't catered to those people. But at least they kept the Classic servers more or less the same. I guess that's the best we could ask for.

Never forget one thing: There are people out there that are so twisted, dark, and deranged, that it would be the most abominable insult to get any kind of "positive" feedback from such life-forms. They are thankfully few as are the negative comments that go with them, but you need to see it as a statistical necessity rather than anything to be bothered by. If you organize it that way, you have 100% positive feedback in the bottom line. :)

As someone who's watched both you and Raxx for many years, I firmly believe both of you genuinely care about the games you play. Raxx really got me back into Diablo 3 after its less than stellar beginnings. He became popular enough for the devs of that game to actually listen to his and others input about it and it actually made it a really awesome game (unfortunately far too late in its lifespan.)

@madseasonshow OK, I'm halfway through the video and have a couple of points to add: - If this video is just for a few people, why drag your whole viewership into a 1h episode? Do you really think the few you made this video for would actually care to watch 1h of this seemingly unscripted rambling? Then why make this video? - Sure, you want to get something off your chest, by I'm not your personal therapist. Feeling kind of abused here. Don't drag me into your negative space or I turn away. - Don't respond to unlogical comments. You said yourself it's a bad idea. Those people you are refering to, calling you a "hate farmer", likely didn't think about it for more than 5 seconds, and even if they were do you think they have good points? So why bother? You feed the trolls and by time turn away the people that you actually want to have here. - Being a hate farmer is a result, nothing you argue about. Your actions can lead to the result, but you do not choose this by yourself. Some people couldn't even hate farm because they apply to much logic and give to much constructive critisism, which would make them a critic. Some people hate farm unintentional by being too emotional with the game and during the video. You don't choose to be chaotic neutral, you are chaotic neutral because of what you do. You can't proclaim it to be different, but you can only adjust your actions.

Funny enough, when you are talking about a lot of these things, a big thing happened recently in the FF14 community that really sparked a lot of similar conversations. As most people know, there has always been this war between criticizing FF14 and loving FF14. The game itself has a lot of toxic positivity, something you hit on a bit in this reaction, and a lot of toxic negativity as well. The problem is, toxic positivity is still "positivity" so its looked at favorably. Its a distinct difference I hate about it vs. WoW, because if you have any criticism its instantly dunked on and you are basically told to stfu and harassed by a lot of the community. This happened with a lot of content creators around 4-5 months ago. This led to Zepla, one of the larger creators, making a video on why she feels like Endwalker (The latest expansion) is the worst expansion in her opinion. She gave a lot of valid takes, and it sparked a lot of discussion but the greater community, ones that don't even interact with a majority of the game mind you, started hate campaigns against a large amount of creators who agreed, made videos, or just in general reacted to her video. This led to her channel being just led to be click bait farm content about hate, and the other channels also labeled as that. Flashforward to about a week ago, Yoshi P., the game producer and head of Creative Business Unit 3, came out at Pax to talk about what changes he wants for the game in the newest expansion, Dawntrail. Funny enough, all of the points that Zepla and other Content creators made, Yoshi P. agreed with. He even said he fell asleep playing his own game. So he went through and explained what he is going to do to fix these issues. I 100% full heartedly think that because the content creators made these videos and sparked discussion across the entire community is the reason why Yoshi P addressed these issues. He isn't the only one feeling this way, and clearly a good amount of the community agrees. Even through the waves of toxic positivity they were able to take away the actual criticism of the game and (hopefully) make good changes to the systems and game itself.

Whenever a company starts looking at their customers as "fans", things go wrong. People who come to Blizzcon might be "fans": , they're customers first, paying (the equivalant of) 15$ a month to play your game. Blizzard in its current state doesn't deserve any "fans", and even if you are, never admit it out loud.

tldr of this video: The video is by MadSeasonShow and it's about negative feedback content creators get when they criticize a video game. MadSeasonShow says that people think content creators who criticize games just want the game to fail to get more views. MadSeasonShow says this is not true and that they don't want games to fail. They use the example of Rax, a RU-vidr who covers RPG games, who made a video defending himself against people who said he wanted Diablo 4 to fail because he criticizes the game. MadSeasonShow says that criticizing a game can actually be helpful because it can point out ways the game can be improved. MadSeasonShow says that they themselves have been criticized for their negative videos about World of Warcraft, but that this criticism has helped them to improve their channel.

In general, a significant number of youtube channels are actually detrimental to the health of a game. Not because they complain about the game, but because they demystify the game to such a fundamental degree, that they flood the community with low hanging fruit. Top 10 lists, things you need to know before you play X, secret ways to make money playing Y. It is too much. A mmo that is solved is no longer about the journey or discovery, which is the antithesis of what a mmo should be. So in a way, the internet is responsible for killing modern gaming standards, because every time a new expansion comes out for wow, there are 20 videos up on every aspect of the game before it's even been out for a week. I think a lot of this contributes to people being angry with online multiplayer games, because if you aren't following these low standard content creators, you aren't following the meta, and therefore don't take the game as seriously as they do. It really isn't a healthy way of thinking of games.

I agree; I wish there was an optimized mmo like WoW with it's selections and choices of gear and content; it's crazy how hard that is to too; doing alittle bit of everything for everyone. Vanilla wow like alot of ppl say wasnt even hard. We were all TRASH when we were kids.

You probably don't play Borderlands series, so it won't make much sense, but it's more about the chances than the item itself. I've finally got a FIre Practicable Hyperion-barrel Conference Call while farming the Warrior at OP10. The odds for that particular item setup are around 0.2% and the dropchance from this farm is around 8-10%, so it had to be a long journey. Not 7-months long, but, well, it happened. I really want to oppose this sentiment popping up recently that anything negative is just "bad". Esp around content creators that need to be always positive. While negative clicks might get more attention i think everyone would prefer to play good games, enjoy them and be positive but that cant be the case obviously - we are always going to have positive and negative moments - that is just human nature. I think positive content might not get as much engagement at first glance it usually gets better engagement and more loyal following. But we shouldnt silence criticism just for the sake of being "positive". Fake positivity is just as bad imo as always being negative.

It's YOUR channel, make what you want, and just have fun. I have been playing wow off-and-on for a few years. I made a rant vid about the state of DF, purely out of passion for the game. and I felt like it was a worthwhile topic nobody was discussing. I had a few people agree, but there was a handful of comments; colorfully describing how wrong i am (im saying this lightly). However the greatest comment i got was just someone telling me, "if i dont like it, go play another game!" I know it was meant to be a gatekeepy jab, but honestly that was when i took a step back, realizing, yes...i...can... and not only that, i WILL go play something else, some people are in too deep, and the actiblizz patheon is all they have, spread your wings, and just make stuff YOU like. Been a long-time fan, and your monotone delivery, and deadpan humor are iconic, if d4/wow get better in the future, make stuff about it if you want, but do it for YOU. I know i cant wait to see what comes next!

Hey man, long term viewer and I've been playing WoW since 2007. This Raxx guy and you both play a game for thousands of hours more than the average person. While I might be lucky to get 200 or 300 hours out of expansion, you most likely multiple-thousands of hours. You need to keep perspective on how that changes your perception and access to the game. While you were making back-to-back videos about how bad TBC Classic was because of the token I hadn't even done a single heroic yet. I truly believe that you need to keep your viewers in mind and where they are at because introducing so much negativity and remember that the issues that effect you as a power user don't impact everybody else.

I like your channel a lot and will be brief. These conversations are interesting but ultimately unproductive when viewers get involved. Content creators in this space make a living playing video games, while viewers use those games and videos to unwind from their real-world jobs. It's difficult for viewers to empathize with content creators. Being able to quit a mundane job and play video games in front of an audience seems like a dream. Hearing content creators complain about games or their communities is like listening to entertainers talk about their work difficulties. It's like peasants trying to understand nobility's problems-they could if they tried, but they're too preoccupied with their own struggles to fully grasp it. I am glad you were able to take a 2 year break and come back feeling better about the game and making videos. A 2 year break from work would help a lot of people right now but they don't get that same luxury. Just my 2 cents amigo. I wish nothing but the best for you, your friends, your family, and anyone else you hold near and dear.

Diablo 4 was loved at launch because the campaign was awesome. The story, characters, and world were great. There were plenty of side quests and the size of the map was so large that it took a lot of time to get through everything. The backlash came when the story was over and there was very little there.
@jippy8976
@jippy8976 5 месяцев назад
I’d argue that the backlash came earlier than that, as the dev team admitted things like they didn’t have a fix for the storage tabs because of they’re crappy design and because Blizzard wanted to do the greedy live service model. This sort of thing crippled the ability to have multiple characters. That’s just one example, but the game was riddled with live service issues that destroyed the game.

I like negative videos the most - that point out how shit everything is today - but that give constructive feedback and praise the franchise/game where it deserves praise. Cause yeah: in the gaming industry mostly the older games have been better in anny way but the graphics. -Vanilla was better than Retail is today. -CoD4 was waaaay better then CoD MW19 for example. - LoL was the best before they revamped everything and started flooding the game with more and more champs. - take a look at the Battlefront classic collection: the PS2 version is so far ahead compared to the remake, that I cant even put it in words. - Warcraft 3 reforged... The fact is, that the gaming industry is completely dead. They cant even re-release a 20year old game without making it worse... lmao 😂😢

Well, I enjoyed this video because I can totally relate to it, having been in a similar spot when I was a (very small) content creator (not this account, you can not find it) for a different game that I really really loved and enjoyed playing but which didn't continue down a path of glory but instead started to put $DLC production over fixing bugs etc, so that I started to develop a love/hate relationship with the game which brought me down and caused me to create negative content about the game until I finally quit playing it even though it could have been the chance for me to actually get a foot into the content creation field (I had 1m+ YT views and above 100 concurrent Twitch viewers). While I feel a similar frustration with WoW there are many other aspects in WoW that I still enjoy so I usually still play it for the majority of the year. But I do see the dark path the company is walking down and I wish we (the players = customers) had any say on which direction the game shall go, but sadly as I see it, only the shareholders have any say in that. But yeah, I still enjoy parts of the game, so it's kind of a love/hate relationship again...yikes. I don't know if you read this, you're getting a lot of comments, but I personally do NOT care for the react content genre at all. I'm usually capable of developing my own opinion about something and I feel like react videos are primarily helpful for people without opinions to adopt the opinion of the content creator. Not in this video though, I see it as you telling your own story and using Raxxs video as a template. Anyways...don't let any negativity get you down, for each loud hater in your comments there's thousands of people who enjoyed watching your videos that just don't feel the urge to post a comment about it. 👍

I think that as soon as you're as big as blizzard AND you're incentivised by growth and profit, then the devs/marketing people don't listen to good feedback, the "I want more of that" - BECAUSE the game has to grow and be more profitable each quarter or it's a loss. maintaining happy customers isn't the way forward for a company....

I disagree with the claim that "going variety" kills a channel. I only watch variety streamers, with no exception. And all of these streamers are big enough to make a living off of it. They don't have millions of followers, but they can live off of what they do. If you are an enjoyable person to watch stream, then it only kinda matters what you play (of course games that one is interested in are more exciting) but there will always be people who watch you because of you, not the game you play. So yeah, maybe for a "one-game" channel "going variety" will reduce your immediate viewership, but it's a transformation, not a death.

If the game is good, people will give it praise. Creators made videos praising Elden Ring, because its good. Very few, negative Elden Ring videos. I think people are just trying to cope when they know a game is bad, by blaming the creator by bringing up the truth. Its not "hate", its being honest.

Some criticism I hope is perceived as constructive. You keep stating your negative opinions about Blizzard as facts and not opinions. "So and so happened because Blizzard is...." While many may agree with you (myself included most of the time), I think its a very hostile way of attacking something. Not everyone shares that opinion, and when it's stated as a fact (rather than opinion), fans tend to get defensive. You have many valid points in this video, and they are for the most part presented in a respectful manner, but a lot of them are overshadowed by your hatred for Blizzard and continued stabs at them. I don't know if it's an attempt at humor that I am missing, but to me a lot of it comes a cross as petty. Especially when its kept regurgitating over and over and over. I hope you do not take this as an attack on yourself, I really like your videos and respect the work and thought you put into them.

Over the past however many years, we as humans have become so engrossed in the consumption of media. Whether the overall effects of this shift are good or bad is a completely different discussion, but either way the shift happened and that’s just how things are and you can’t really change that. However, people CAN change how they choose to interact with that media. Too many people blatantly consume with little to no thought about what it is they are actually taking in and when that approach is applied to super time consuming games like MMOs or ARPGs, nothing good can come from it. Instead of playing games for the sake of enjoying them, they’re played as an escape or just as something to fill some kind of void. So, when a game like that goes bad, it’s only natural that they’ll continue to engage with it and they’re either incapable of recognizing it’s flaws, or they choose to blame it’s flaws on other people, such as the players or content creators who critique it. It’s the sunk-cost fallacy in action. They’ve invested so much time into it that they can’t justify any sort of criticism because if they admit that the game is flawed, then it would mean all the time spent playing it was wasted. So when someone says something bad about it, they take it as a personal attack. I think the fact that you’re willing to acknowledge a games flaws while still actively rooting for it, and the fact that you can still appreciate the fun times you’ve had in the past, as well as the good things that a game has done for you and the industry as a whole, shows not only your genuine passion for the game, but it shows that you’re a responsible consumer that understands why they engage with specific media. You understand what makes you happy and what doesn’t. You understand just how unhealthy it is to continue shoving something down your own throat for the sake of brand “loyalty” or in order to mindlessly chase after nostalgia. Personally, I absolutely love witnessing the amount of effort you put into expressing your thoughts on any given subject because the way you express yourself demonstrates that you truly care about whatever you’re talking about, whether that be WoW, Blizzard, gaming as a whole, or any of the other topics you’ve covered on your channel and because of that I think you’re genuinely one of the best channels out there.

I haven't finished this yet, but I had some thoughts around minute 20:00 People tend to think that love and hate are on opposite sides of a spectrum, when in reality they are more similar than not. The true opposite of love is indifference. These people who claim to love the game don't look at it through the same lens as you do. You have a deep connection to WoW and any videos you make criticizing it comes from that well. The people who get mad at you and your criticisms see it as an attack because they are still blinded by the fun they are having in that moment. Its akin to a relationship that teenagers have and the relationship that a married couple of twenty years have. It sucks, especially when these people attack you and try to bury your criticism as "bad faith" or whatever other bullshit they spout. In reality they will most likely play the game for a bit longer and drop it when all of the same issues that you warned, i.e. the WoW token in classic, come to fruition. I've seen this happen with other games, movie franchises etc. As I go through life I see it more and more and its draining. Its one of those things that I don't think you can get away from. People see what they want to see and they will act in the way that is natural to them. One of my favorite quotes from my favorite show of all time. "You are what you can't stop doing." I think the best thing to do is to stand tall and firm and tell the truth, no matter how much it will hurt you in the end. Life is short, after all, and I don't want to slink away in the shadows while the house in burning around me. Just because you can't see the flames, doesn't mean they aren't there. Maybe I got too philosophical and I'm way overthinking this or I'm projecting some of my own experiences and thoughts on your situation. Whatever. I don't know if it will make you feel better, but just know you have allies and supporters. You make fun, entertaining videos, both back then and currently and I for one am here for it.

If you're looking for feedback: the little eye bloop noises your character makes is genius and brings me an unproportional amount of joy, and I love the monotone delivery (be it genuine, which I suspect, or not... it's still great in either case). I'm a new subscriber and just found your videos a month ago... I like the critical videos, because I share many of the same perspectives, and it's one of the main reasons I got into game development, I wanted to make the games that I wanted to actually play (I've been in AAA and indie for going on two decades now). An example are your pandoras boxes videos like for SWG --- that's what I lived through... I was there for that... and those where the complaints that me and my friends (even irl friends) had about the game, that we still toss about now and again to this very day. To put it to a timeline and really explain in detail about the failings there, not only hits me with immense nostalgia, not only validates my long standing hatred for what happened to that game that only a small few truly understand the depths of that betrayal, but more than that, it gives me perspective on my own games and games that I work on; And that's priceless. There are some channels that do nothing but shit on upcoming games... Kira being the biggest offender I can think of off the top of my head (games are hard to make, and judging something for being a year or two behind or being crazy picky about alpha footage is inherently nearing grifter status taking advantage of those that don't know anything about game development)... but your content isn't that. I really do enjoy your content, especially from a 'historian' type of way.... if you don't have fun making that content, even if it is inherently critical or negative, you shouldn't make it... but like I said, I rather enjoy your content and I hope you make more. THERE IS ROOM FOR CRITISISM AND NOTING RUINOUS ACTIONS BY DEVELOPERS/PUBLISHERS/ETC... anyone whose hot take is 'it's negative and just farming for views' is throwing the baby out with the bath water... yes some channels are grifters that are overly critical for views... but this channel isn't that; your analysis is competent and very informative... and it gives future developers/publishers/etc confidence in knowing what works and what doesn't work and why.

Recently you put out a video titled “the Diablo 3 dumpster fire” and I watched it probably twice if not half a third time. I enjoyed the video because I was actually there at the time experiencing the stuff you were discussing and showing. What I enjoyed the most, was how the community across all social platforms came together and voiced our concerns. Most importantly, there was in fact a happy ending with reaper of souls. I appreciated you taking me down memory lane with that video and in no way did I feel like this channel was negative or you came across as a game trash view chaser. In fact, I hadn’t even heard of the term until you made this video here! I think it’s just an opinion some people have which I wouldn’t take to heart. Your content and others speaks for itself. It’s a great, informative channel filled with nostalgia and I wouldn’t mind if you covered some of Helldivers 2 or new stuff as well. On the thing about one game andys, I watched baldy try to go from strictly streaming wow to a variety streamer. It was awful,he started with dark souls and the stream was just constant trolling in chat. He did try more games and eventually ignored the mad wow players and got to where he is today. I think if he didn't have such a huge audience it might have fucked him, so I can understand why some pigeon hole themselves into 1 game. Trying to change can be catastrophic if you're streaming as a job. I do feel like its better though, I'm not a streamer but baldy has been way more entertaining since he moved from strictly wow. His streams are more fun and less negative.

Mads, I see a parallel with your content creation and the MMO genre in general. A lot of people are waiting for a genuinely good game like vanilla wow was in its early days. There currently exist no MMO that has a rich world and interesting mechanics that isnt tainted by real-world politics or self-destructive monetization. In this polarized world where most people are either with or against you, there is an overlap; most of us are disappointed in the current options on the market. So you do you, make videos of things you like, the part of the community that sticks around are the people you want to have around anyway. I hope we all break out of this stalemate and find something better to do than play 14 year old games in whatever form they are remade and hope for genuine creativity in the gaming industry for all of our sakes.
