I know its a decade + old , but I just bumped into it. Amazing flute . I will order the one that is played by the other lady. As Wonderful it is, it's soothing to the heart and soul. your daughter Lilly is a real Lilly !! ,
Ha ha, on the funny (involuntarily so?) side: The color and stripes on his shirt match the double stripes around the neck of the flute! So cuuuute, lol! Stealth flute player!
With dry hands you never get the holes closed. Use some hand cream or white wool-wax to give your fingers more grip and a better touch and feeling for the holes. You will see it does wonders.
you know what, this was a lovely video. You can tell it's dated by now but you've got a great family and I feel really good about owning one of your flutes now. You all seem so genuine and passionate
Thank you for the comment at 12:00 about giving credit to the Native American cultures of the U.S. for giving humanity this wonderful instrument. Cultural appropriation, and profiting from it, is very common these days. But that doesn't make it any less depraved. Let us please keep in mind the many nations that used to inhabit this land long before any of us got here. Let us work so that their sacrifice and heritage is properly honored and remembered.
So true! We do not make Native art because we are not Native. We are making a kind of instrument that was invented by Native Americans and out of respect we choose not use traditionally native symbols or decorations on our flutes. We have a nice statement about cultural appropriation on our website on the About Us page.
I just bought here in Belgium a Stellar flute in the key of G. Signature soundscape by Stellar. Fsharp was sold out. That's for in a couple of weeks. But... What a nice flute.. What a spirit in the flute... The sound is amazing. I loved it from the moment it came out of the box. I play it now every day for about 1.5 hours. Its really peaceful and brings me the sound to calm down my mind after a day of work. The funny part is that the sound of the flute is in my mind. When I drive to a client and pass by some wonderful seeing of nature I hear the sound.. Thank you for all the nice videos with lessons and other stuff of the flute from Stellar.
I noticed this is a pretty old video, from 2006, I think. Are they still in business? How di I go about ordering a flute? Do they have a website or phone number?
I bring mine everywhere I go. I took my spouse to get a covid test and while waiting I was playing it. When I finished, a few people thanked me for playing "for them". It was a pretty kewl experience fir me.🌷💜
What a wonderful comment! I'm glad you have one of our Soundscape flutes! I feel the same way, I can always hear flutes in my mind and it brings me peace.
In 97 I made Native American flutes. The construction and learning about wind instruments is fun. You have great flutes, I did see the signsture and it looked familuar to me with one I owned in Wa. state area in late 90s. We all know a good start in life is with musical instruments. A carrier is good to pay all the needs of oneself. Withput the burdon of those who would steal my stellar flute.
What a great video!! Okay so I almost lost my lunch when he blew out all if that water (Lol!) but its a great video!! I absolutely love how you stick by your flutes!! I think that's FANTASTIC!! I also really like how the gentlman was moving along with his first lesson!! Well done!! Thank you for sharing!! LilyMarlaina 🌷
Thank you for the great comment Lily! We just had to make a joke about blowing out the condensation! People often think it's spit, it's not! and obviously there should never be this much water in your flute from playing unless you are also swimming :) (don't play your flute while swimming!)
Just got my Flute today, love it!! I have studied the minor pentatonic scale while teaching myself the bass guitar. This is a beautiful instrument. Thanks for getting it to me in just 2 days!! From Washington all the way to Alabama.
Hi from Wales in Uk. I truly enjoyed this video. Im a Saxophone player and would truly love to get a flute. Ive sèen some on line that have beautiful Native American art work and bindings on them. Do you do that too ? Also do you ship to the Uk ? And what kind of prices are we talking about please. ?
Hello! SO glad you like the videos! Yes, we ship everywhere. The cost of shipping is calculated for your location at checkout with a fairly accurate delivery date. I recommend selecting DHL if it is available as it is the fastest and cheapest option usually. The flutes range in price, we have flute making kits for as low as $55, basic flutes for around $130, and the fancier flutes start around $200. Hope that helps! You can find our flutes at stellarflutes.com
The half gallon of spit was funny as heck. Might get that looked at🤣. Sun through a window, for instance, is not good for glued our bamboo flutes I understand. Particularly bamboo. Just finished a quina flute in G. Also a NAF in paduke and winge. Turned out nice and both really take a shine. Thanks for the vid and blessings to you and yours.
Glad you got the joke! My dad was having such difficulties getting his lines right and feeling pretty frustrated by the whole process of filming, I think he really needed to joke around! Sun will tan some woods, but won't hurt the flute unless its quite hot. they are surprisingly durable. Less prone to splitting than bamboo. -Lily
Well I finally got myself a flute, I'm in England so I had to find a maker in my country. Eventually I got one, in low E, made of Douglas Fir, and it is a fantastic instrument. I play other woodwind instruments so I could pretty much jump right in and play it, and its so relaxing to do so, its a very soothing, freeing instrument. And with it I pay homage to those natives that created these instruments.
Wow. This is amazing. A friend brought me a stellar flute made in December'17 I loved the voice of it. Thank you people for making this video and the flute. I love you guys. Sending lots of love from India. :) Samir
Thank you l really enjoyed this video, l will definitely be looking at buying a Stellar flute in the future. I’m hoping to get someone to bring it back to South Africa for me 🙏
This video is brilliant, thank you so much. I am about to start learning this lovely instrument and you have explained so much that I wanted to know. One question I have though is how do you know what key to get for the flute one is buying, for example the video stated that the flute that was being played was an F# flute, does that mean you only ever play in F#... that bit puzzles me...
It means that the scale starts and ends with the key of F#. It is like when you are playing on a piano and you play all the notes from on F# key up to the next F# key, many notes are in between.
We've done flute making projects with many of the tribes in Washington including several with the Nisqually tribe and quite a few with the Sqaxin tribe.
Nice sound and beautifully made. I'm not familiar at all with pentatonic scale though I've built many pan flutes, (Syrinx) which as far as I know are always diatonic, even the So Amer ones. What is your most popular key? In contrast, any pan flute can play in any key with the right embroshure control, as the sound of each pipe can be "bent" about a half tone, up or down. Hearing your music makes me think that, though from vastly different origins, the NA flute would pair nicely with a hang drum or hand pan.
Just got mine in a few weeks ago, it's a nice flute ,my only point is steel wool the end and the block with some 0000 steel wool its too rough to the touch.
Having purchased a flute backing 1999 I am now in the frame of mind to learn to play it. Do you know of anyone in the Edmonton, Alberta area that gives lessons?
If you are playing solo it doesn't really matter. If you want to play with someone, you have several different options, one of which is playing in the same key like in this video. You should choose a flute that sounds good to you. The lower flutes are harder to play so in that case you might have to start with a key you can reach the holes on and advance to lower keys.
The pentatonic minor scale is thought to be a traditional scale for the Native American flute. To play the pentatonic scale you leave the third hole down covered , but you can also play a diatonic scale and many other scales using that hole. We tell people to start with the pentatonic scale because it's very easy to play harmonious music. Our flutes come with a booklet that shows how to play all the notes and encourages people to advance their flute playing by learning other scales.
We don't , but you can put something over that hole and it will basically be a 5 hole flute, then when you are ready to advance to other scales you will have the option to take the cover off. I write about this in a blog post: blog.stellarflutes.com/2018/12/15/why-choose-a-6-hole-native-flute/
You didn't like watching us pretend to play flutes together? Watching this old video , I usually can't stop laughing. I'm with you though, I usually try to shoot videos that are very concise now.
