In this video, we'll learn about the basics of HEC-HMS. And for that, we'll do Muskingum Routing Method.
HEC=Hydrologic Engineering Center
HMS=Hydrologic Modelling System
1)Open HEC-HMS.
2)Click on 'File' and then New'. And give suitable name and location path.
3)BASIN MODEL MANAGER:
i)Click on 'Components' -- 'Basin Model Manager' --'New'.
ii)Click on 'Basin Model' and then on Basin that we just created.
iii)Add source. For that, click on 'Source creation tool' and mark it on basin model.
iv)Add reach. For that, click on reach creation tool and draw. The first point of line will be upstream.
v)Click on arrow tool and then, select the source and right click. Then, click on connect to downstream and select the reach.
4)METEOROLOGIC MODEL:
i)Click on 'Components' -- 'Meteorologic Model Manager' --'New'.
5)CONTROL SPECIFCATIONS MANAGER:
i)Click on 'Components' -- 'Control Specifications Manager' --'New'.
ii)Go to sidebar on left side of screen and click on control specifications and click on 'Control 1' and adjust the date, time and time interval according to your data. The program will only run the part of data within this date.
6)TIME-SERIES DATA MANAGER:
i)Click on 'Components'--'Time-Series Data Manager'--'Data Type=Discharge Gages'--New
ii)Go to sidebar on left side of screen and click on 'Time Series Data'--'Discharge Gages'--'Gage 1'
iii)And on lower pane, click on Time-series gage, select suitable method of data source (Manual entry for this case),units and time interval for the discharge.
iv)In time window, adjust the date and time.
v)In table(next to Time window), enter the discharge values. And a hydrograph will automatically generated.
7)Go back to Basin Models and click on Source and select 'Discharge Gauge' as flow method.And select the Gage 1 as discharge gauge. Click on reach-1, select INITIAL TYPE:DISCHARGE=INFLOW and give the value of K and X. If you choose number of sub-reaches more than 1, the program will divide the reaches into parts and do the routing.
8)Go back to Meteorologic Models. Click on Met 1. We're not using precipitation. So, set None to Precipitation.
9)Click 'Compute' on toolbar and on 'Create Compute'--'Simulation Run'.
10)Compute the run.
The values I computed in excel and that generated from hec-hms matches well enough.

hi! great video! i have a question, how did you calculate K and X for this video?

This one in a video was a problem from my textbook. So, i already knew those values. However if you want to know the values of K and X, you need to calibrate and validate. For an upstream flow data of a certain time, you need to have a corresponding downstream data and we calibrate and validate the values of K and X. So basically, it's kinda like a trial and error process. This calibration and validation can be done in hec-hms as well or simply in just an excel.

@@pyzis oh! i see! thank you for the explanation. if i have multiple reaches (on one long main channel) going through the watershed and i have several stream gages on the main stream, do i need to use the same time period for all the gages when comparing Inflow and Outflow?

@@sambones9299 When you're calibrating and validating for a certain reach, the upstream and downstream data should be of same date for that particular reach. Well, it's not like the data for other reaches should also be from same data but it's desirable to have all the data from same time period. Because river forms are dynamic and they change with time. So, having data from different dates will surely affect your analysis. Well that's my opinion. I'm also a student and I'm still on a way to learn.

Bro, I don't have much experience with hec-hms. I learned it like last year matra for my college assignment. But vannus na, I'll try to help sakdo.

@@pyzis i am finding difficulty in estimating the initial values such as k and x for rivers, and other values such as baseflow (which to select and why?, how to estimate the initial values if i am choosing constant monthlt baseflow method ,, and so on.. how can i get a starting value before i even think of optimizing by comparing with the observed values?)

Normally, X ranges from 0 to 0.3 for natural rivers and K being the travel time, depends upon the reach. Just assume suitable numbers for your reach and try optimization trial manager in hec-hms. It'll help you to get optimised value of K and X. You can do trial and error with it and tune it within the suitable range of K and X. But make sure that the optimisation doesn't give you an absurd value. And when it comes to baseflow method, it depends on many factors like if the conservation of mass in a sub-basin is a must or not, what the purpose of model is, etc.
