Thank you so much for creating this series for the free version of sketchup for all of us who cannot justify the cost of purchasing a CAD program!!!! So far I've been able to follow everything you did in the first 2 videos. Keep repeating those keyboard shortcuts! They are super useful and easy to forget for us new users.
i learned it can me smart to press ctrl when using the push pull key, that will make a second plane instead of moving your own plain and creating a hole
I've got the free edition. Where you have to do all your drawing online. My materials only are colors. How can I configure the free edition to include all the "paint" textures you show here? I've been looking and can't find all those choices.

Great tutorial. I'm having problems though with the offset roof. Everything is fine until I rotate to push/pull back. I just find an empty shell that doesn't allow being pulled back.:(
Thanks Justin. Not sure what I'm doing wrong but when I try to draw a rectangle ceiling over the house model, it doesn't draw. Ive grouped the house model beforehand. What am I doing wrong please?
Thank you, very easy to follow except for one thing. When I draw the gable for the roof, it won't come as solid, only see-through. I've been over and over the video, but can't seem to work out what I've done wrong. Could you please assist me.
when creating the door frame 18;30, I noticed that you are using two tools at once, the rectangle tool and the orbiting tool, how do you do that I've been trying to make my door frame the way you did but because of the perspective I have to move the building as you did but when i select the orbit tool, the point that i had with the rectangle tool delets, please help, thanks
I usually struggle with new things unless someone is sitting right beside me showing me how to do something, but the way you word things and show the perfect examples just makes this so easy to pick up. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos.
When I get to the "push pull" part right after I do the 6 inch 0ff set on the wall ( around the 4:30 min mark) it creates dotted lines on the walls and floor and it won't let me " push pull" the door. I can't figure it out.
Really miss the menu bar, don't like the menus at the right side. I find the icons had to remember. Time will probably take care of this issue. Just need to learn the meanings of each ion. Steo bt steo in your tutorial is great. Newbie, but find the tutorial easy to follow, etc. Keep up the good work.
Well... after 10 years of downloading Sketchup and deleting it - I finally learned how to model in Sketchup and then move that model as a whole rather than move one part, warping the other joining surfaces and polygons. Thanks a bunch man - this was pretty informative. I also have a whole bunch of keyboard shortcuts too thanks to you and they all make sense. Maybe Trimble have changed things since this video but when I grouped my model I couldn't activate the R key to create the ceiling. Had to start the whole model all over again and not group - worked this time but the R key doesn't work as smoothly or obviously as it does in your demo here.
haha, lots of recognition there! I've been doing the same, downloading and then getting super frustrated with basic manipulation and uninstalling. These videos are great though! Haven't uninstalled yet this time.
this video helped me so much thank you for that. very easy to understand , and the shortcuts you repeated are easy to remember make a big company using the free online version
the first window i made in the front of my house worked perfectly with the push pull tool as described, HOWEVER, when trying to make windows on any of the other walls it just pushes out a huge block and no matter what angle I try, I cannot get it to create a window hole! What should I do?
You are the best teacher ! Thank you very much for showing me ....(us)... everything "from scratch". I never used any design programs like this before, so at first I had to practice how to draw a single line and everything seemed so complicated. Then I watched and practiced your videos over and over and understood everything perfectly. I am currently in an interior design school. This free tutorial is absolutely priceless! After learning as much as I can from you I will be brave enough to move forward and get the pro version. I am thankful for the Universe to find you!
Great tutorial, but you didn't say how to move an object and I thought I'd lose my mind looking until I learned the Shift+S search trick. Great video :)
Bro, I'm starting my quarantine SketchUp journey with you! You made it so much easier for us beginners, hope I'll be as dedicated as you are in making lay-outs!
I have just started sketchup and this is seeming easy to follow. I seem to be having a problem from getting out of each command, for example I am have just drawn a square and just want to move my cursor around and I can't seem to get it out of drawing a square mode?
Thanks for your time!!! I’m having a problem with the roof in this lesson. Front of house is fine, but when I turn to the back, the rear of the eave is a bluish color, not white like yours. Subsequently, I can’t pull it to the back of the house. What am I doing wrong?
I am having same issue when I turn house around to pull roof bavk it pulls a negative space across the roof creating a hollow gap between house top and new roof
I see that this was 2yrs ago, so you'll probably have worked it out. For those that haven't, instead of thinking that you need to click on the back, don't. That isn't the face (working side), click on the front which is the face and then use the push pull tool, when you've got to where you want the end to be, it will create another face at that point. You'll see that better if you are creating a cube, draw a square/rectangle then push pull from the front face (white) to the required point. You will then see that push pull will have created another 5 faces. Front/Back, Top/Bottom and Sides.
I had an issue when attempting the push pull on the roof that I can't seem to fix despite going back and redoing each of the steps. It seems that it is not recognizing that the roof has a face on both sides (toward the door and one that faces the back of the house) so it will only let me offset on either the front or the back. The other side just shows a hole where the face should be that cant be selected to offset since it isn't a face. Any tips on what I did wrong? I notice on yours that as you move around the model all of your faces are white. On mine the back of the offset triangle is a light blue
thank you for making such a simple and informative video!! I have followed multiple other tutorials and have always struggled with push pulling window and door cuts. I have spent countless hours and much time being frustrated never being able to consistently do what I want. Following this video has allowed me to do everything I want in my model with a smile on my face!
2:16 -- how did you change the mode of drawing the rectangle? Why did it start drawing it around the starting point, btw? And how did you make it draw *from* the starting point?
Great tutorial. I only had one issue, when creating the offset for the roof. Pulling it forward worked great. However when the model was rotated to the back the offset was not a solid. The back side of the roof could not be selected and push/pulled. Any thoughts.
You need to tap Ctrl, I just figured out its a modifier (toggle) that decides whether to create a new face and pull from it or to move the existing face!
I've never touched the program until yesterday. I watched your pt 1 and, after watching just that, I was able to build a model of the slide-in truck camper that I will be building. This video, pt 2, is just as helpful for furtherance. You're a very skilled tutor that educates and engages. Thank you! I'm going to find something for doing the framing layout also; perhaps in one of your videos?
Thanks for your work, I really like these lessons. One question: it looks like Esc does not close group editing if the material tool is selected. I have to switch to the select tool to exit the group editing mode. Can the update cause that or I just do it a wrong way?
am so glad I wached that tutorial. Thanks for showing the efficient flow so that we do not draw one line at a time, doing countless calculations on the paper :D.
how do I unhide window in non-online program? I can lick on "back arrow", but that's not the correct way hahaha, because I can do 100 steps and suddenly I want to unhide it, so where do I find it?
Love your tutorial but I am having issues around the 14 minute mark with the roof of the house. I created the offest of the roof to make it 4" bigger than the original roof as you mention. I created the lines for when the push/pull tool is used to bring the roof of the house 1' forward. The issue is that it pulls the face forward but the backside to the roofing is empty. So if I use the push/pull tool to have the offset roof cover the houseing there will be 1 closed face and one open face. edit: It definitely has something to do with the lines as when I don't add any lines to the roof that has been offset the faces are correct when extruding but the I am left the roof extruding a complete triangle instead of the roof. edit 2: What I ended up doing is extruding the triangle as is to 1', adding the vertical lines, then pushing the middle of the bottom of the triangle ,where the lines were drawn, back the the face of the house. Would still like to know what my error was but this will do for now.
You need to tap Ctrl, I just figured out its a modifier (toggle) that decides whether to create a new face and pull from it or to move the existing face!
I'm designing a shipping container house model to give to a builder. After doing the whole design the hard way...twice...I found these videos. So what took me several weeks...twice...I'm probably going to finish in three days. Great job explaining the app!
Thank you so much for creating this series for the free version of sketchup for all !! May i ask what computer specifications you had to show on video?? Because my computer specifications : AMD EPYC 16-Core Processor /NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB/ SSD 980 1TB /RAM 64GB When I plan in sketchup 2020 what always stalling or run slow So Maybe please show how to setup software to run like you did PS. I not use in e.n in life
You sir are a fucking SAINT!!! I’m a photographer/retoucher and know adobe PS and Illustrator extremely well. I thought sketch up would be the same..Nope...even tho I’m a photographer I do work in construction and I’m very handy. I wanted to use a simple program to make some blueprint plans for a reptile enclosure I’m going to build...your videos LITERALLY showed me everything I need to know with BARNEY STYLE instructions (easy instructions). Thank you! Automatic subscription!,,,,
@@gretagulienetti6724 Only recently. What I'm learning is that not all of the instruction works for some reason, so I'm using lateral thinking to find workarounds. Tip: 1. keystrokes don't always activate the function the way it should, so go back to the sidebar menu when all else fails, & 2. push-pull is devious. Try different ways to find your extention points as not all the one's described work.
Merci pour ces vidéos. Faciles, complètes, didactiques, elles permettent d’avancer pas à pas. J’ai acheté une version SketchUp for web renouvelable par an. Ni le programme d’aide, ni les didacticiels pour SketchUp complet ne me conviennent (menu diffèrent). J’utilise la traduction automatique qui suffit (ce n’est pas de la littérature mais c’est très efficace) Hello from the France and congratulations
Love it. Bought the Sketchup Pro. Did almost everything you did in your tutorial but I don't have a materials bar on the right like you. Is that just in free version?
no matter how many times I type the dimensions right, it ALLWAYS some part of rectangle get bigger. I type just like in this video for testing purposes; 20' by20' it ends up 20 with 16, or 26, or32 what am I doing wrong. How can I do it right?
Lessons 1 & 2 are just perfect. we can get an idea of what can be done. I play the video in fast forward, that means you speaking velocity is great to for beginners. great work 5*
@TheSketupEssentials Your video is good except I can't get past the push pull eliminating an opening. I am wondering if the function has changed from the time of you making this video till now? When I take the shape backwards that's all it does, goes backwards. It doesn't make the widow per say disappear.
My second lesson on my first day and I created a house! This is great instruction. Best to have dual monitors so you can have the video instruction on one and your SketchUp work space on the other.
Would you comment on what I did wrong on my roof? When I made the triangles, first they didn’t turn blue (as yours did) they were white. Second problem was using the push/pull tool, I would loose the front(like I just pushed the front to the back)! Really enjoyed the lessons! Thanks
3 things. When I drew the roof with the push-pull tool I lost the triangle face on the front of the building. It actually moved to the back of the building. 2nd. The offset tool would not allow me to click on the triangle line. Lastly, what function allows shortcuts using key strokes? I ask because when I hover over the drawing and for example tap the P key the curser doesn't change. Thanks.
Have watched lesson 1 and 2 so far and they are a great intro to SketchUp free, thank you. I'm trying to copy what your doing on my own page however since I'm in NZ and we work with mm I wish to use my own measurements. In the free version I'm looking at, which does look a little different to yours, I have found the app settings and changed to mm but in the measurement box in the bottom right it continues to show inches. How do I change this?
Hello! Today is my first day with SketchUp Free online! I am following along with this video but as silly as it sounds, it won't let me click the box to type in my measurements..HELP! haha
thank you very much for this video. as a beginner I really find your content very helpful and idk maybe the way you speak or attention to details that somehow helps me focus. however, I'm a bit confused. when I try to make the roof with the push-pull feature, the back of the roof appears hollow. is there any solution? i'm quite lost
Great great tutorial. Thanks a lot. My challenge is how to rotate the model while executing a command; how did you turn the building, after picking the rectangle command, when you were fixing the rectangle that was to become the window; i.e after creating the window frame, please. I'm stuck there. Please help me out.
Appreciate the effort in making these, but as someone who never designed anything using CAD this didn't help. Still have no idea how to use SketchUp and my plan of the house doesn't match yours. Would have been nice to plan things out but I'll just freestyle the building of the woodshed I want.
The blue axis, beside the human model, is clearly vertical, correct? Okay, then why, as you select the up arrow and turn your axis indicator at the pencil blue as you prepare to draw your rectangle, does it actually draw in the green and/or red plane? The answer must be simple, but yet I'm not seeing it. Thank you for the hard work and effort too!
I am enjoying the lessons a lot - it makes the program very easy to understand and use! But when I had to create the roof for the house (12 minutes into lesson 2), for some reason I get a sort of "negative" roof - kind of like a hole instead of a filled one, like in your video... could you please help? Thanks a lot in advance! :D
Great Job Justin Im sold ...im in the process of updating training programs and think this tool would be great to use... Im not sure which to purchase. Can you give me any Idea or suggest which version would be best for on line education
I am teaching sketch Up as a vocational course at MDC, Blackboard online because of the pandemic, so I am learning how to teach on line. I am having an issue with sketch Up when showing on the blackboard, the students can not see the pointer, so they don't see where I am pointing items for them. May be you can give me an advice. Thank you
Excellent, thank you. Only thing i fumbled around with is that how was the default material chosen when you got rid of the brick siding. I ended up just choosing a white color.
