It all depends on what strategy you wish to take. Treasure hunting and then selling the resources is definitely an option. Some people like to purchase/build nodes and mills/mines etc so that they are automatically generating resources every day. The ROI on those properties is quite some time - around 30 to 60 days, but this then sets you up for automatic daily resources which do not require your time. It all depends on what works for you.
