Carving is a Hobby anyone can do. A sharp knife and a good piece of Basswood is all you need to start. In this video i discuss several options for what tools you can get to start with. This is just genuine advice from someone who wishes he had someone giving him this exact advice when he started.

Stateside you can always do Amazon, but better options exist. (I always go with Loess, because they're closer to my home and shipping is a bit cheaper.)

@morider48 Appreciate the kind words brother! Since around November of last year is when I got serious about it. I had dabbled and carved some terrible things once or twice prior, but not much.

I started few years ago, just randomly watching Doug Linker video with very simple carving. I bought myself one cheap knife and couple of sticks of basswood. And that was more than enough to have fun. Later I got different knives, paint and all the stuff. But I can tell for sure, its very easy to start with what you have in hand. Right now I stuck somewhere off the grit, have no access to my tools and all the good stuff. I have ancient pocket knife, and scraps of pine and I still have happy moment when you gift your carving to random kids and see their happy eyes. Just start! Johnny, thank you for your channel I found recently, I will definetely try some of your ideas you share. Great content! (Sorry for poor english)

I find Google cartoons is my hero for art skills.Cartoons are the simplest form of art. I'm lucky I had a bad whittling thumb cut as a grandson learning from Grandpa Jude and he didn't teach much other than enjoying whittling.Had numbness until midlife always more careful after the cut the stopped by my thumb nail. Lots of good information. I built 3 knives that fits my hands great from Badger State Blades and believe they are great and I only have about $50.00 in the three having to build my own handles that are extra strong because they are laminated and size to fit my own medium large hands. Agreed about slick finishes for wooden handles of all tools 220 grit sandpaper usually close to dull.them and prevent slipping and blisters. I'll try that glove but remember don't aim firearms or blades at body parts. Thanks Johnny

@marlawhite3682 thanks so much for the kind words. I already have a video on that, the "Questions & Answers" video. On painting paint brands i use whatever cheap acrylic I can find. No real preference.
