In this video, I share how I've dealt with student pushback in my classrooms. I'm looking at pushback as when students just aren't really digging what you're doing in the classroom.
It's important to allow students to have a voice in your class, which I do through class debrief. I share how I conduct the debrief as well as times I've changed how I do things based on the feedback and times I stuck to the way I did things.
Cliffs Notes version:
🍎Tell students why you're doing what you're doing
🍎Give them opportunities to give feedback
🍎Don't take the feedback personally and always respond with 'thank you'
🍎Analyze the feedback

Hi Thom, I really love your videos! I actually use a lot of these tips, but sometimes forget or get frustrated. It's always good to revisit them from a fresh new perspective. Keep making them! I'm a fan:)

I really appreciate your videos! I feel so relieved ('someone actually gets the challenges!') and better equipped with things that actually work! Exactly what I've been looking for. Absolute gold. Thank you! Also, do you have any recommendations (authors, etc) for working with high-risk groups or high-schoolers in the realm of classroom management? I work more often with high-risk groups ranging from 6th-12th. I'm finding so much transfers across the board but the methods have to adjust a bit (less cheesy for HS). Thank you so much, again!

Hey Lucy! I recommend you check out my friend CJ Reynolds for high school classroom management. Here's one of his most popular classroom management videos - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-W3fr4tm_mkE.html He also has a book called Teach Your Class Off that I highly recommend. Hope that helps!

@@gibsonedu Oh my goodness, these are so helpful! Wow, I am stunned and appreciate your time responding. I'm definitely looking these up. Side-note: Please know that your videos are making an impact! I've already shared a slew of them in our work Slack. (And, I didn't mean to imply that your techniques are cheesy; they're not. I just don't have wording for what high schoolers need who are "too cool for school"). Thank you, again!

Ha, no worries! I know you need to adjust your approach when working with high schoolers vs middle schoolers 👍🏼

You should do a story time and be one of those RU-vidrs that would be cool

That's a good idea. I wonder what kind of story I should tell...

You're giving me a breath of hope. I started teaching two years ago, and I started teaching for the International Baccalaureate. However, this term I wanted to definetely quit from my job because I heard some comments from certain students about my classes being boring and that really made me feel bad.

My first school was an IB PYP school. And it can be so deflating to hear students discuss not enjoying a class after you're putting so much work into it. Hope the video on getting feedback was helpful as it gives the students a more productive avenue to help you shape future lessons.
