The first attempt at starting the second Yamaha Enticer 340 snowmobile I bought, which the previous owner said had bad crank seals. Ultrasonic cleaners: Bigger version of mine: amzn.to/2E4nUEh Cheaper one I have: amzn.to/2DDhez3
My father impressed me with this adage more than 60 years ago. I think that a lot of this 'good thinking' that we see in Andrew has possibly been passed down from his father.
Andrew is awesome, will attempt to fix ANYTHING. If He fucks it up, he buys a new or used part and carries on........................ When he installed a radio in his truck using a chainsaw to cut the dashboard I instantly subbed...... lol
Andrew, about 4 decades ago I had a Yamaha 440 Exciter. Same issues as you are dealing with. From time to time, we would need to take the carb off and give it a good cleaning job. Then that snowmobile would scream down the trails. At first you were having a lot of issues with smoke while the engine was running - but, it appeared that the smoke went away after that carb cleaning was done. Good job!
@@DominickCascianoIII yeah that's one thing, but putting in plugs with an impact, I mean you might as well just put some loctite on them at the same time
There is one sick looking snowmobile I love that retro style of the one light and the windshield. It reminds me of James bond I can’t remember which movie but I do remember there were snowmobiles in one and they look just like the ones that were in the bond film great job Andrew !!!
Well Andrew you scored big on these. I've rode some new sleds but I still come back to the older ones. Yes it's more work to stear. Yes they bounce more. No they don't have the high travel suspension. No high tech. But they leave me smiling and if something happens I can fix it by myself and on the trail. Thanks Andrew. I pushed you for these videos and I'm happy you did them. Plus I can see you have fun! Any more??? Haha.
Thing is you can have just as much fun on that old sled if not more because you're not so worried about breaking it and they always run. No computers to break in that bad boy those little Enticer were great they're so light you can almost put it on your shoulder if you get stuck. Only negative thing I would say about that sled is the suspension is a little hard on the back. But besides that you can go all day on a tank of gas. My first sled was the 250 1 lung then I had the 340 loved those little Enticers...
I used to have the same machine ( it was a 1980 model ). It had an air leak in the lower end so I installed all new gaskets and crank seals - I never knew exactly what was leaking but the new gasket kit solved the problem. I wish I never sold that machine - it was so simple and reliable - I loved the heated wind shield - On very cold rides I could heat my gloves over the hot air duct on top of the engine hood.
You're an adult, and make your own decisions, but you really should wear a helmet, even if you're just out testing. It doesn't take much to ruin your entire life.
@@Al_Dente-d1p you said "shut up, tool. Who the fuck asked for your opinion????" and I agreed with his opinion that he really should wear a helmet, but he's grown up and can make his own decisions.
Should always wear a helmet as crashing suxz. Yet let those who ride decide. And Oliver Oshkosh jeez you could have used a better choice of words man. Let's keep Andrews channel drama free as I'm sure that kids are watching also. You will get more respect when you show some guy. Peace.
@@Al_Dente-d1p You do know how this comment section works, right? No one needs to ask me for my opinion, I'm absolutely free to state it whenever I want. And if I want to give Andrew the advice to always wear a helmet then that is something that I'm allowed to do.
My dream snowmobile is a long track 340 enticer, with a 480 phazer engine installed. A real sleeper, then when you hit the gas jaws are dropped. From my understanding the phazer engine fits almost bolt on in a 340.
Crank seals are responsible for sealing the engine where the crankshaft meets the case. Bad seals will allow air to be sucked into the crankcase. And since on a two stroke the the air/fuel mixture also travels through the crankcase, leaking crank seals will cause a lean condition. Most obvious symptom of bad crank seals is a high idle once the engine gets hot.
That's why i'm convinced every engine should have a decent air filter, even if supposed to work in a "dust free" or "mouse free" environment. Nice work : ) The previous owner maybe thought it was running lean ,because needed the choke,so he thought to the cranck seal ,because used to it by dirt bikes i guess.
I like how you had the clarity of mind after spraying yourself in the face with starter fluid, instead of being embarrassed or angry you quickly realized there was still enough gas in the cylinders for you to try again quickly one more time and then that worked!
0:48 - never change, dude, never change. In one of your future videos, I'm waiting to hear you laugh as you think of the comments you'll get about using an impact wrench for spark plugs. lol
Running fine only with a hint of the choke is mostly caused of idle mix jet screw adjust...or something is in there like the piece of wood, as in your case... ;-) Runs like a beast now! Nice work! :-))
The best thing going for you here is that it's a Yamaha, BUT please, PLEASE don't use an impact driver to install or remove spark plugs. You're driving these 'plugs' into an aluminum cylinder head.
I agree with you on that. But that's just a 1/4" driver, that wouldn't overtighten it, plus I didn't go very tight. And I make sure the threads are properly started before using that to tighten.
Nice vid of the carb cleaning procedure Andrew, I have owned sleds all my life and still have a Yamaha SRX. I notice the biggest issue I have is with those bastard mice getting into the airbox and sometimes the exhaust chambers. always be sure to seal up both at the end of the season.
You need a dedicated squirt bottle or can for gasoline. We use a special kind in chemical laboratories that is really cool and not expensive... Even an old mustard squirt bottle will work great and has a reclosable spout! That way you can control the amount of fuel. ...you poured a ton of fuel into the cylinder...be careful! The excess fuel is pumped out the exhaust and could give you a problem...FLAMES! ...hey, it happens.
If you can get it to run, a propane torch will tell you if seals are gon. Don't light torch, just run propane near crank seals. If gon the motor will speed up as it sucks in the propane.
So did you ever get the main jet to come out though, they get really stuck up in there, but once you get'm out and clean it, your machine will most likely run great, ...and to poke those holes in the main i found a used needle on my sidewalk once while i was checking the mail, and was going it throw it away just to get it up away from any kids, and so when i was walking back to the house i was thinking i didnt want to just throw it into an empty garbage can, well i got busy and i left it laying by one of my garbage cans for like two years, finally i was in need of a fix lol, fixing and cleaning a main jet, so thats what i used hahaha, worked great !!! little holes :o i save just about everything...
ughh I wish i could show you how to re-do UV curing enamel paint on things...... i could make a bunch of those snowmobiles look 1st day home super brand new in like a weekends worth of work. congrats on 800k subs btw, you'll be a millionaire before next year
SIMPLE GREEN is a better cleaner! I also would spray jets out with carb cleaner. Nice work! HEYY PLEASE TELL US/SHOW US ABOUT YOUR CAR PORT GARAGE THING! It looks awesome. Thanks for the cool videos!
Andrew is blessed with having a lot of knowlege to finx just aobut anything. Reminds me of the old days when our parents and grandparets couldn't afford NEW stuff so fixed what they had and make it all work:-) Think more and More we would, as a society, go back to that. Andrew can teach a lot of us that..thank you Andrew...
Clean the carb and replace the gaskets and bingo. On the rusty carb parts have you ever tried any naval jelly or acid to get the rust off? That one really runs very strong! Tell us the money part too! How much did you pay for it?
Tip : if you don't have a ultra sonic cleaner a very cheap alternative for soaking torn down carbs is soaking them in tarn~x jewelry cleaner which is a few$. Just don't soak any rubber gaskets and remove the needle and seat If they are rubber ,for really gummed up carbs. Carb cleaner will swell anything rubber. Or use some purple cleaner with baking soda and water in a sealed container( tuber ware ,ect) and place in your trunk for a few days while you drive around. All the sloshing around from acceleration, stopping and corners will have the same affect as a ultra sonic cleaner. If you get pulled over by the cops just tell them that you are just cleaning a carburetor ! Lol
Well his lose is your gain. I got a small one when I got my first one but an hour later found me back at this place where they sold them to get the biggest baddest one they had... that was stupid too but they are so much fun and addictive to speed when you ride in all kinds of weather. I seen you leave baire handed then next day when working on it, you had your mittens on which getting to that airbox is tough anyway and you can believe where they got the saying... ten pounds of stuff in a five pound bag. After that, I paid attention in summers where there were more of them around and I paid very little to free for them. Get all of them going and first snow they were on craigslist and gone in short time for good money. I had christmas money to give my kids and they had their own machines but teaching them to respect them, no drinking and driving with your buddies stuff that every dad goes through (bout time that you carry on your name..hint) cause raising kids when your older or just old isn't fun at all. Great video and if you take yours up in the mountains then its "drone" time. Really brought back great memories, Thanks Andrew... I bet your wife enjoys riding if it has electric start/LOL
There is also a small idler jet in that little cylinder on the side of the main jet.. It's usually a small flat head to pull it out... It will have several small holes along the side and a small center orifice... That's usually the issue when they won't idle. Just make sure you don't tighten them too much when you put them back in..keeps it easy to fix again later.
I got the same same sled but mine is only a single cylinder (one spark plug) I bought it in the spring and after a few beers thought it would be a good idea to ''test it out'' well after ripping it down the paved road it stalled and the engine was locked (foolish I know) so I got it home quick and put transmission fluid down the spark plug it freed it up and today after months of sitting I put gas down the cylinder it started but sounds a little rough. my point is these are strong sleds and I'm only curious to see how I can push this thing to its limit and how ironic is it that it happen and this video was in my list
With all of these toys this kid is sure to be a teenager for another 40 years. ... But his 'mechanical savvy' puts him well into the "ol' man" category.
