Getting to know my new tent - Why I'm glad something's missing and a surprise (Watch to the end!)

Did you know most tents sold in the US are lined with toxic chemicals? I didn't before making this video. Although I can't be positive, this tent likely does not have these added chemicals. This is the Lanshan 1 PRO single person tent from 3F UL, an ultralight and affordable tent made from silnylon.
I purchased this tent with my own money and was not compensated for this review.

The comparison of colors has been exactly what I've been thinking about. Handy vid, ta.

Good review mate. I've got one myself and for the money, you can't go wrong. Just make sure you seal the seams. Your son's a real character!

Hi Dennis, thanks for this detailed review - very helpful! Here in crowded and overpopulated UK if you want to thru hike a trail and camp on the way most likely you will be in stealth mode (Scotland is the main exception with a 'right to roam'), green is the way to go and minimal close to LED lighting (or you'll shine like a Christmas tree!). Happy camping for the summer 2020!

Must say that you looked far happier inside the grey tent! Good to see you training the next generation of camera operatives....patience is a virtue that you obviously have.

Thanks Sean! Could you tell that to my wife? ;) I try, but as a parent you can never have enough patience.

Good review. It was nice that you involved your two little future thru hikers. You stayed on topic while being very patient and kind to your children. It is so nice to see good parenting in action. I have the older lanshan 1 (two layer version) and it seems like a great little tent. May up grade to the pro after I get some miles on my current tent. God bless.

Looks like a great tent. I've used silnylon tents and tarps for years and they are incredibly robust. In last 5 years we've gone to dyneema (cuben fiber) which has benefits (lighter, stronger and fully waterproof/does not wet out) but also has a few downsides (even though its lighter it doesn't pack as tightly as silnylon, it is very succeptible to spark holes (sparks just tunnel through where they will have to sit on silnylon before they do much damage) and of course it is very pricy. Good luck on your next camping outing and looking forward to the video you produce with it. k

Great video, you talked me into getting the grey. Also, logs have holes.

Hey Dennis. Thanks for your review I just ordered mine. I had a choice of green, red, black or gray. I chose green. I’m looking forward to camping in some of the cooler temperatures. I have been a hammock camper for quite a few years and now I want to try sleeping on the ground. Wish you the best with the gray tent. I opted for green I don’t think I could keep that gray color clean. As a hammock camper I’ve learned that in cold weather the inside of the hammock would get a lot of condensation but there are ways to reduce it by hanging a cloth over your nose and mouth when you sleep. Not enough to suffocate you but just enough to trap the warm air you breath out. There is a guy named shug emery out of Minnesota he’s an extreme cold weather hammock camper and he has quite a few tricks up his sleeve to beat the condensation. Look him up he’s quite the character on RU-vid. Thanks for your video.

Interesting! Never heard the cloth trick but that makes sense. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the comment!

Nice review, I like the comparison of the two tent colors. My kids help me setup my Lanshan 1 Pro as well. I prefer the green just because in the morning I don't what the sun light so bright in my face when I wake up. Enjoy!

The green is definitely better for that. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed!

I recently received the green version of the pro. I hadn't considered the colour casting and filtering of light. For me it was important to choose green to blend into the scenery somewhat as wild camping isn't exactly legal here in the UK. You can use a prusik knot to attach the doors which improves the lower guy line rig - Justin Outdoors has it working and looks pretty cool. You can also use a second peg as a hook to hold the guy line (for the zips) close to the floor.. Nice video, thanks for sharing!

Oh those are good ideas, I'll have to try them. Thanks!

I could not find on Justin's channel the prussik hack for the doors. Could you maybe describe it for me? I'm familiar with the knot. Thanks

Great review. kI'm going for the LanShan 2 Pro. Not much more weight but huge inside, good for me & the dog. Will be going for white/grey though as it makes it so much brighter inside.

I love mine. It’s huge inside and is bomb proof. I saw a comment that said it’s a fair weather tent and that it wouldn’t be used it in bad conditions. I think the opposite. I feel like the tent is bomb proof. I was in a 2 hour downpour and had about 4 ounces of water inside. The water was wicking inside from the door toggles seam. That next weekend I mixed up clear silicone and mineral spirits. I painted it on the 4 main seams (running down from the center) and the side tie outs. I then soaked it with the water hose for 10 minutes. I found no water after that. This tent is amazing for the price.

Nice tent, I'm thinking of getting one to replace the SMD Lunar Solo as there's a couple things that niggle me with the Lunar Solo. Worth pointing out, double wall tents get as bad condensation, you just have an extra layer to protect you from drips.
@WhatDennisDoes
@WhatDennisDoes 3 года назад
That's a good point and I didn't realize it for a while but yeah the rain fly on my double wall tents were always wet in the morning, so clearly they get about the same condensation.

I don’t blame you, I’d be a bit unhappy if I didn’t get the color I ordered. I really like either the gray or the khaki.

I don't care what colour my tent is as long as it's green. I have this tent (in green obviously) and I think it's good, although I don't plan on using it in challenging conditions of any kind - definitely a fair weather tent which will deal with a bit of rain and wind if it has to. Re your front guying arrangement - I've rigged a single extra guy from the hanging loop at the apex exterior which stakes to the ground a little further out than the provided guy. I did it for extra stability, but it might help with your issue too.

Yeah I'm all set with that. I've been meaning to make a wood fired garage heater as a project. I should make it, that would ensure the warm weather gets here immediately.

Thank you for the review, i got the same tent. Didnt really get one thing: is this safer compared to a PU tent in term of possible cangerogenous emissions ?

I think so, but I have absolutely no proof.

The LANSHAN 1 is far too small and I felt claustrophobic once inside. I'm a broad man and I don't think they were made for my size. I felt as though I was sleeping in a coffin when all of my gear was inside. I came home after the first night when it rained all night- the condensation inside soaked my sleeping bag- getting in and out was a bit difficult too. A good tent for small kids though.

Apparently it’s been made larger for 2021 now 230cm inside and no extra weight

My only decision to make is the L1 pro or L2pro. I like the gram savings of the L1 but I like the two doors and vestibules of the L2 pro. I’m 6’ and 225 so not so small. And yeah, it’s my understanding to old fire safety laws is the reason manufacturers of sil nylon tents (like SMD and Tarp Tent, as well) do not ship seam sealed.

If it helps, I'm 5'9" 175lbs. If I were any bigger I think I'd go for the two person.

What Dennis Does Thanks, Dennis, I just ordered the Lanshan 2p. If I’m to believe the reported weights of each tent, then L2p is just 4 ounces more than the L1p, so a pretty good trade off imo.
