As others have said, you demystified Sketchup for me. Your example project with clear explanation and demonstration of each step made how to use Sketchup CRYSTAL CLEAR! I had looked at other Sketchup tutorials and they all left me confused and overwhelmed. Even those targeted at woodworkers. But yours made me think I can do this! Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!

This is an awesome comment to read. It helps me know that I am doing a great job at explaining it even though it is a difficult program to get to know. I wanted to make sure that I made these videos in a respect that people are trying to figure out the software for the first time and have no knowledge of it to begin with. If I can break it down into layman terms so they can understand it then this video did it’s job.

I saw these tutorials when they came out last year. I was not in a position to do much, but I always knew they were available. I’m finally on the final stages of cleaning out/up my garage to make a workshop for me. I’ve used SketchUp previously and on my Mac so I was somewhat familiar with the terminology. I even took a 2-day class at my local Woodcraft store. With all that said, you are, by a landslide, the best teacher I have found. Simple movements and instructions made it more clear than ever before. I also like the fact you gave me multiple options to do the same thing. I’ll be firing up the rest of the series as I get closer to being able to design and build my cabinets and work area. I’m actually happy I waited this long. It’s like watching Game of Thrones after the final season was released. I was able to binge watch straight through so I didn’t have to wait for the next season to come out. Thanks very much for creating this tutorial series!!!
@rhwoodshop
@rhwoodshop 4 года назад
Wow for my sketch up tutorial series to be compared to Game of Thrones is pretty cool. 😂 jk! Makes me feel good that what I am doing with this tutorial series is making a difference. I have heard from quite a few people that my teaching methods are very understandable for a program like this and that is exactly what I was hoping to do. I have seen many people try and teach this program but they always seem to do it too fast to follow and if you are not familiar with the terminology it makes it even harder. Ty so much for taking the time to write this thoughtful comment and I hope to see more of you in the comment section in future videos.

Simply awesome tutorial. I'm just now retiring and getting into doing some simple wood projects around the house. First up is a table top for a front loading washer and dryer. There will also need to be an elevated L shape enclosure at the back to hide the connections which are higher than the W&D. This awesome tutorial is so simple to follow and gives me exactly what I need for this project. A table top, three legs and the L shape riser for the back. Thanks for this great presentation.

I watched three of your tuts and I've been a 3d modeler for 20 years, hobby and professional and I gotta say you did an excellent job on these videos. Very pleasant to watch and easy to follow. I had to learn to sketchup so I can give better quotes on my woodworking bids and needed something for fast mock ups so I figured I'd learn it and I've watched 3 or four others so far and between you and April Wilkersons vids I learned my way around in 3 hours no problem. It's a nice program for this sort of thing compared to cinema 4d and maya and those kinds of apps. Thank you and good job.

Thank you for this series. I tried three other tutorials before getting to yours. Either they weren't woodworking or they started assuming I knew the interface. I found yours. I am using a different version but after looking around when you said to, I found a tool bar on the left I liked that exposes just about everything. You started with your bench at a different angle on the screen, so I messed up my first bench and started over. Actually, I did this twice. I had made some unknown error. But, that's ok. Each time I repeated the project, I caught up much faster. No harm done. I wrote down all the dimensions the first time so now, if I had to recreate it, I think I can do it in about 5 minutes. Getting used to the orbit and hand is a PITA, but that's not on you. By the time I got to the skirts, I could figure out what I was doing regardless of the angle you used. On to the next video

SketchUp is one of those things that seems to intimidates people. I think your SketchUp Series will show them that it's not that hard, and in fact fun after you learn it. As for me, I've used it in the past, then tried Fusion 360, and then went back to hand drawn plans. However, now I want to use SketchUp again to create better prototypical designs, and to create accurate cutting lists to save material and time. I'm looking forward to this series of videos Drew!

Please consider an episode covering how to best produce a working drawing (views, dimensions, notes, etc.) using the free version, as I have the impression that that is the main reason many people finally upgrade to the paid version. Also, an episode showing how best to layout the parts for the most economical cutting (e.g, from a from a sheet of plywood) would be appreciated. All your videos are outstanding; congratulations! 👍

Don't worry. I don't have the paid version and I am able to do all of that, It just takes a little extra time. I will show you what I do.

@@rhwoodshop Thank you for the heads up. I will be watching. While I'm watching, I will be working to become proficient on Sketch Up. Also, as I did yesterday, I will be enjoying again your other videos. My next project may be your second table saw sled. I really appreciate your effort in creating it. It is a quality design.

Nice training tutorial! I need to start using Sketch up. I currently use Power Point to draw some basic drawings, but you can't get that isometric view very well. Sketch up looks to be a pretty powerful tool for drawing woodworking plans.

Nice tutorial Drew! If you're not familiar with the 3D Connexion Space Mouse it makes using Sketchup a lot easier to use. Anyone who finds sketchup to be something they begin to use on any kind of a regular basis I would highly recommend picking one up. It makes navigating around your drawing a dream. No more changing to orbit and click and drag and change back. With the Space Mouse you fly around your drawing with ease. You operate the Space Mouse with your left hand and use the regular mouse with the right. It cost around $100 for the base model and is worth every penny. I would liken it to the difference between welding with an auto darkening helmet vs. a fixed shade helmet. Not something you really need until you use one. Then you can't go without it!

@SlowandExpensive
@SlowandExpensive 5 лет назад
Yeah, that's the one. I've had mine for about three years now and it's great. Can't draw without it. The corded one would be fine too because I really only use it when drawing in sketchup. Another cool thing you can do with it is fly through Google Earth. Normally you would have to navigate Google Earth similar to sketchup clicking and dragging but with the Space Mouse you just fly around! It's great!
@SlowandExpensive
@SlowandExpensive 5 лет назад
@@ryangratland2330 I have the cordless but either would work fine. Just a matter of preference. I was worried at first that the battery might die (it can't be changed) but it's been working fine for over 3 years now. It needs charged occasionally just plug it into the computer via usb cord. If you use sketchup you will love it I promise!

I followed along and it was so easy to create that way, I've done a couple of the sketchup tutorials but they are more complicated. Here I found the shelf cleat would have to be made lower down on the leg and then moved into place. The make component clicking kept including the shelf.
@rhwoodshop
@rhwoodshop 5 лет назад
+LT Woodproducts if you forget to make the component for the leg and you make another one on top of it it will include it. You also need to click out of components before you make other ones because again it will include it as one part.

Thank you, very clear. I only had a problem with the protractor where I could not get it to stay red, it would change to green as soon as I clicked. I used the tape measure instead to create the reference points.

Using your cursors will change the colors of the protractor without moving your mouse

When choosing the item to make a component, instead of clicking and dragging to select, you can triple click the item to select it. Quite a bit easier.

Thanks for a great tutorial. Really easy to follow as I have a MAC and can follow the commands. My only issue is Sketchup doesn't like my MagicMouse. A Microsoft mouse works but I wonder if I should buy a tablet?

All of the tutorials that I do I perform on a MacBook Pro with a touchpad mouse. I don’t think it has a problem with a product manufacturing mouse (Microsoft) but some programs are a little buggy with specialized equipment I’ve noticed. But I wanted to let you know what I actually compose these tutorials on.
