Getting Windows Update To Work on Windows 9x! 

Thanks Michael for taking a look at our project! This project is not complete yet, but in the near future we will eventually have the Windows Update websites fully working for all versions of Windows 95, Windows 98 First Edition, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000, and even Windows XP. Huge thanks to everyone who has contributed towards the Windows Update Restored project!

Video came just in time. I've set up my first fully function Windows 98 SE machine for DOS and Windows games. Now it's also as up to date as windows 98 SE can be. :)

Microsoft should really provide all the older update files for Win9X as a download for historical reasons.

(2:16) 😮 I have a hard drive image that was created from a hard drive that came out of an IBM ThinkPad 240 that was originally purchased and used in Singapore, and that might have some of those update files (for Windows 98 SE in English)! The image was around 2 GB in size. (6:26) Ah, the old Internet Explorer Web Page Dialogue.

I don't know why, but I find old Windows versions simply wonderful, even though they can no longer be used productively today, at least not if you need the Internet for it. But the old look makes you reminisce about your childhood days and I love how you address such videos here. And it warms my heart to see that these systems are still being actively taken care of. Every Windows has its own magic, but since Windows 8 and up it's been less and less. Please keep up the good work and to all future generations out there: never let Windows 9x to Windows 7 die.

I have some Slovenian language updates for W98 still on my service CD-ROM from back of a day. I also have IE 5.5 in Slovene. I will contact the team behind Legacy Update and share those. I did use Windows update on Slovenian W98SE back in a day and it defaulted to v3.1 (2003-2005-ish), but if I am not mistaken the default US/English version Windows Update for W98 in around 2004-05 was v4. I guess they never bothered to translate the newer Windows Update :) Also IE6 wasn't available for Slovene W98, the latest was IE5.5. But for English W98, you could get IE6. And yes, updates for W98 were language specific, as the whole OS was translated, unlike XP which had a Language Pack for Slovenian and it accepted normal English updates...

This is just amazing! Have been hoping to fully patch my Windows 98 gaming PC at some point. But never really knew where to start. The unofficial Service Pack someone once made is def more for advanced users and never was able to get all the updates working from that package. This looks like it would be a way better solution for most users!

Just really hope Microsoft doesn't send a cease and desist to the developers of this website. It's amazing that such old software is still cared about by so many people. I'll definitely be checking this out when it's all finished and complete

Well, well, well... I did not expect that my contribution would be shown on a RU-vid clip. I will try to translate the Windows Update websites into Serbian, although it was never officially in that language before. Especially the v4 website. I'm honestly happy that the old updates are being restored now and I'm also surprised at how long the Windows XP update has survived for all those years. The family computer in my childhood home had XP and I remember seeing it update once in a while and the first time I've seen windows updates was when they were installing on my grandma's XP machine. There's something about seeing the old Windows Update page from the Windows 2000 era that just makes me feel oddly warm and fuzzy despite me not seeing it much outside of MAYBE seeing my dad install some updates to a customer's pc back in the day when he and mom started a pc repair business.

The wallpaper you are using is something that I created years ago based on the Windows 3.0 party wallpaper and I am so honored that you are using it in your video!

MJD Makes my Windows 98 setup great!

I have been hoping for this for a long time! Watching your video took me back to that time period. The Windows Update Restored folks did an outstanding job of recreating the Update website. It was also very exciting to see those theme packs in that list from Plus98, even if they aren't accessible for download just yet. I used to have the SciFi Theme on my Windows 98 that I downloaded originally from Window Update back in the day. About 15 years ago, I was able to buy a boxed Plus98 to get those themes back. I am not sure if the Windows Update Restored team can extract those from a Plus98 CD ROM, but if they need it, I am willing to volunteer them a copy of my Plus98 disc. I also have two Dell computers that have their original hard drives on them with whatever updates I was able to get at the time. Now, that might be limited, since I am not sure if they have any of the updates. It has been years, and these hard drives might just have fresh Windows 98 installed direct from the CDs. I am not sure how I can tell if there are any Windows Update and patches on them? I do hope that the Windows Update Restored team are able to keep on fully restoring the whole Windows Update archive for the retro Windows enthusiast community. It has always been on my mind on how to get all those Windows Update files in a simple and straight forward way like it used to be when Microsoft supported those operating systems. This is such exciting news. Thank you Michael for bringing this to all of our attention. That really is a fantastic walk down memory lane seeing that same Windows Update website that I remember restored and archived again.

As much as this looks good this project won’t technically fix your PC as these are old security updates it’s just a real shame someone can’t patch windows XP or Windows 9X with the latest 2023 patches I hope someone makes this a dream come true one day

Man that sucks because I had a Windows 2000 installation a few years back that I installed every update on before they killed the 2000 servers. I believe I lost the disk or wiped it, though. Might go looking for it.

I clearly remember that Windows 95 did not have any automated update system! I remember it was quite hard work to update a Windows 95 especially because it asked to reboot EVERY time. Thanks for the video!

It would be interesting to see MJD learn to use XPMode with Microsoft Virtual PC on Win7. Anyone else reading this use XPMode with any regularity? I personally had to use it for Various hardware/software issues. And I stopped using it in 2012 when I built a New Machine after work finally transitioned to Win7. Work paid for half of My Machine via reimbursement. It was a weird time.

I should test this. I wonder if it will work in non-English Windows versions. I already have the issue of that USB driver for Windows 9x which uses files from Windows Me and it has the collateral effect of changing some texts (like the Start menu) to English

Been waiting for something like this. Also is there an update that enables the themes in 98SE? My 98SE retro system doesn't have them at all, but my vintage 98SE system does.

I do remember being able to use legacy update to update Windows Vista. I would think that updates weren't as necessary back in the days of Windows 95 or 98 since most computer software didn't depend on the Internet.

Another option to do legacy updates is to use Winfure Windows Update packs.

If I need need to do anything, even very basic on Windows 10 I have to make sure it's not at the last minute & also that I don't have to go out anytime soon. 95% of the time there is a problem. Never had this on any older Windows. XP was so easy & a joy to use.

I've made VMs with those old versions and they do still update, although the updates have an end once installed. No new updates have been made in decades..

Spend 5 Hours in the midnight updating windows vista vm yesterday and xp two days ago (5 hours is just vista xp was quick and no problem so i didnt count that) And now you just drop this bomb here
