In this video I go over a number of considerations if you're thinking about getting some of your comic books graded at CGC. I also go through some comic books that I'm considering getting graded and the reasons why or why not they should be graded. I show some of my CGC graded books and talk about older labels.

Thanks Brian! At some point I'd like to do a more in-depth series on grading comic books, but it's a pretty dense topic and I'm not sure if it'll be interesting enough. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for this video! It's nice seeing someone going over topics a lot of comic channels don't touch on. I just sent out some comics for grading and I think I made some poor choices but we live and learn. I up the great content!

I've certainly made my share of choices I've regretted, but it's all part of learning. At the end of the day, I love the hobby, the stories and the history, so it's all good.

I think something people don’t consider is that $1 books jump to $100 books overnight, the only real guarantee we have is that the cost of grading will eventually increase so grading will never be as cheap as it is today. Also, new comics are in the best condition they will be in and are easiest to achieve the 9.8 at the cheapest price point so I don’t see it as a negative to submit new books. I’d definitely like to hear your opinion on CBCS graded books.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment. One thing I forgot to mention is pre-screening, and that's where getting new comic books pre-screened for 9.8s may be worthwhile. I think speculating on what is potentially the next new $100 book is risky, but there are certainly people who have made money doing this. I want CBCS to be more successful, and from the limited number of books I've seen, they grade just as well as CGC. Unfortunately, they sell for less than the equivalent CGC graded book - but this could be a very good thing for an astute collector looking for a good deal. Thanks for watching!

@@raph-retro-comics I definitely have mixed feelings about prescreening. I just feel like if I can’t tell if something is a 9.6 and above before sending it and that’s the grade I want it just makes sense to me not to expect a 9.6 + and to save the prescreening fee and trust my own expertise. What do you think?
@raph-retro-comics
@raph-retro-comics 12 дней назад
@@UNCANNYGEORGE I personally haven't pre-screened books myself, as I'm fairly confident in my grading abilities. However, I've watched videos of collectors pre-screen, and if the books don't make the grade, they will re-submit the same books again, with some success in getting a grade bump. It can be worth it, but that's a good amount of time and effort to do that.

For bronze and modern comics, CBCS and CGC have comparable values. CBCS also has a flat rate on grading, while CGC charges 4% more on the high dollar books that you submit

That's a very good point about high dollar books with regards to fees. From the sales I've seen, it does appear that CGC books command a higher premium for Bronze Age key books (like Hulk 181 or House of Secrets 92) but to be fair, I don't have comprehensive data for all Bronze Age books as a whole. I can see modern books being pretty close. Thank you for your comments and watching!

I'm no conspiracy theorist, but the bigger the key you submit, expect harder grading than a similar condition lower value book.

That's a fair point. I think part of it is that when you declare a high value for a book, and it goes to the 'unlimited' tier, it gets scrutinized by more graders. I remember using they grade vouchers you get with the annual membership (higher value book grading), that I was always disappointed with the grades of the book. Thanks for watching!

Excellent video. When you send your books to CGC for grading (I am assuming you are from Canada), which method do you use to ship them? I am nervous of sending 25 high value comics in the mail. The maximum that I can insure my package with Canada Post is $1000. Do you just risk it? Thanks very much!
@raph-retro-comics
@raph-retro-comics 7 дней назад
I send my books (packed extra securely in essentially a double box) via ExpressPost Canada Post. Yes, the maximum insurance is $1000, and it costs over $100 to ship, but this is the way I've been doing it. I also the mark on the customs form 'Books for evaluation', so there is no customs charge. It's a pretty nerve-wracking process, but it's like Christmas when you get them back! Thanks for watching!
