Remeber going to the Villa back in the mid/late 80s, on a school field trip....been a while, but I remember the pool.....but I also remember being a little worried when the school bus had to pull off PCH and head up the long, curving, steep driveway heading up to the villa....ha! I suspect schools don't get to go there anymore....at least since the Getty Museum opened up 20 years ago.

I've lived in California my whole life and I can't believe I've never heard of this place. I will have to visit, but it's important to understand that such places make for grand public spaces, but to think individuals deserve it all for themselves is pretty disgusting.

0:18 "we're in Malibu" ---- actually, no. The city of Malibu doesn't begin for another mile plus up the PCH. The Getty Villa is technically located in Pacific Palisades, a community in the city of Los Angeles. But similar to Gladstone's (also in Pacific Palisades) the Getty Villa incorrectly refers to it's location as Malibu.

The Los Angeles city border is indeed near PCH at Coastline Dr. (the entrance to the Sunset Mesa neighborhood). Huell is standing just west of this intersection at the beginning. However, it’s still not in Malibu. This section of PCH is in the southern end of Topanga, an unincorporated area of the county between Malibu and L.A. As David stated, the Malibu border is further west along PCH, about a quarter mile west of Topanga Canyon Blvd. See: maps.latimes.com/neighborhoods/neighborhood/topanga/

I'll split the hair even further ;D He stands directly across from 18000 Coastline Dr, which is in Malibu. Sunset Mesa homeowners (except Pacific View Estates part, which is Pacific Palisades) have a Malibu address and attend Malibu schools. It is a border and can be confusing. I grew up there and it was a wonderful neighborhood in the 60's & 70's. Here's a good article from LA Times: "Where the Coast Meets the Neighborhood" (8-28-05).

Getty Villa is NOT in Malibu. Getty Villa is in Pacific Palisades. Address is 17985 Pacific Coast Hwy, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272

Rome never could build structures like these if they didn’t have slaves. Ancient Rome was beautiful in its day but built with the suffering and blood of slaves.

Slavery is inherent to humanity throughout all cultures, it might not be ethical or gift but regardless it’s a constant feature of all ancient cultures.

Slavery was dynamic in ancient Rome though. Some slaves had better lives than free people. You had doctor, lawyer, and educator slaves. If you were a slave with a decent role in a wealthy household and had a master who was kind and fair, you had a better life than your average rank and file soldier or fishmonger. Many of them were more like indentured servants and were given full roman citizenship after working a number of years. Many of them were allowed to earn their own money and buy their freedom. Of course slavery shouldn't have existed at all. Many still had it so bad they took their own lives. But it was not as black or white as most think.
