Gevi has been making coffee equipment since 2017, but this crowdfunded Indiegogo project is their first attempt to enter into the specialty coffee market. The 4-in-1 smart pour-over coffee machine has impressive flow control and programmability, but is it truly the Decent Espresso of pour over? We find out in this review, where we'll compare the original prototype with the final production version!

Would love them to make a cheaper version that just allows for auto pour-overs. Perfect for us coffee geeks who have grinders and have significant others who don’t want to go through the “hassle” of making a pour over themselves in the morning. :)

Yes a 2-in-1 that does just the boiling and dripping would be nice. Though I guess the scale can be placed under the flow head.

this comment ^^ that's the only reason I ended up going with a Breville grind control (drip coffee)... I love pour-over coffee so I hope one day Gevi can develop a full automatic pour over machine and wake up in the morning with my pour-over coffee ready. The Melitta Epour is a great attempt but it does not have a built-in grinder :( so it defeats the purpose of having a machine (I'd rather use my chemex)

I agree, that would be awesome. I don't think that Decent group will want to use the grinder.

It’s wonderful that they have listened and improved the product, and honestly I think it looks pretty good for what it is! I still think this is a solution in search of a problem. I have my wife using the Encore and Bonavita I got her, and she sometimes even uses a gooseneck and a V60. This wouldn’t make life any easier for her. In fact, the electronics would make her much less likely to use it: she like analog. Would anybody who cares about any of the variables want to use an automated machine? I know this is addressed in the video, I just don’t see this as having the same utility as an automatic/dork computer pour-over.
@quazster
@quazster 2 года назад
Totally agree with this. Would bet that most people that actually understand all these variables get more enjoyment in controlling through monkey action. In my opinion can't compare to Sage stuff as the people buying those tend to prefer milk drinks and a so-so base coffee, as long as strong enough, is ok to have a drinkable latte for example.
@retusrieben6487
@retusrieben6487 2 года назад
I am that kind of decent person… xD but i would love just the pour-over thingy as a stand alone… no grinder, no scale since I have both already. I must say I really love both extremes: the one where I have full control by doing everything by myself(in terms of espresso that would be a lever machine) and being able to play around ultra precise with those parameters. But absolute no go on that machine here is that it still has no possibility to get firmware upgrades, with a touchscreen, animations and probably endless possibilities to make pour overs that’s a shame…
@robojimtv
@robojimtv Год назад
As someone who likes to tinker but gets lazy about taking notes on the process, the ability to save a recipe right after making it is actually pretty cool. Myself I'd like a simpler version without the grinder as mentioned by a different comment. So just a water boiler and automatic pourer and probably move the scale to be under the pourer.
@stevemb0
@stevemb0 Год назад
My concern was longevity, especially as a few issues with some early units. However, I have used this twice a day for over a year and it delivers every time consistently. Grinder is well suited to pourover. I set up a 5 step pulse pour and it hits the spot every time. The brew never stalls and level bed every time. I use a V60 above a Hario insulated jug, the No. 2 jug fits perfectly, the No.3 fits as well - moves the bed closer to the spouts, probably better for heat loss. After bloom I do the Hoffmann swirl and once the last pour, another swirl. Every brew finishes within seconds of each other and you just let it do it’s thing.

Do you know if there is any plastic in the brew line? Plastics when water is heated or is acidic, it leaches these estrogenic chemicals into the brew. My manual drip process uses a ceramic cone. For me metal (steel or copper) is acceptable. I personally am not concerned about the water storage tank just heated and brewed water

I've really enjoyed watching your videos, I think you make really well considered reviews and techniques, one thing that does bug me is how you refer to generic or items of a different brand by other brand names. That's not a Chemex and that plastic cone is not a v60. I know coffee nerds will know the difference, but it seems in poor taste to refer to something by a different brand name and inexperienced coffee people will not know the difference.
@LifestyleLab_

This is similar to calling "facial tissues" Kleenex. A "Brewing Cone" is still a V60 even if it's not made by Hario. In my humble opinion
@0whitestone

I just completely disagree. I generally hear people people refer to v60 by name and if it's not, then it's a whatever brand it actually is, or just a "conical brewer" or something similar. I've never heard anyone call generic coffee cones v60's like they do with Kleenex, but I'll accept that this might be a regional thing. Taste will be completely dependent on your coffee and recipe. Commenting on taste from this system would be akin to commenting on the taste from using a particular kettle... it's merely a water delivery method. Grind quality was covered in the original video, it performed quite well
@itsm3th3b33
@itsm3th3b33 2 года назад
@@LifestyleLab_ Obviously we must fix the recipe and coffee beans variables. The point is to compare the delivery of that same recipe by this automated gadget versus a manual pour. For example, when it says 97F, was it really? 40ml of water, was it really? Besides evaluating the accuracy of the dials, more importantly, say my recipe calls for 60ml of water poured over. When I do it manually, I let that water sit on the coffee, which sits soaking for a while before dropping into the cup below. In this gadget that same 60ml is delivered in drips, and nothing soaks. What's the difference in taste?

I don’t know about this. You mention people with no gear - it’s hard for me to believe someone with no coffee gear is going to drop $800 all at once as their first coffee gear purchase. And people who are already into specialty will have a nice grinder on hand. Not sure about the product market fit on this one.
@LifestyleLab_
@LifestyleLab_ 2 года назад
When you piece together the combined cost of each component. 60mm flat burr grinder, scale, temperature accurate kettle, V60 cone, carafe... the price is actually quite justified without even considering the added functionalities of the pouring system
@ericanderson1753

@@LifestyleLab_ yes, of course. I’m simply contending that the persona you’d have to target (one who has quite a bit of money to spend and who cares quite a bit about specialty coffee and good equipment but has no equipment at all) may not exist. I’d be interested to see the results of a survey on the street asking the question “how much would you be willing to spend on an all-in-one coffee setup?” And then a survey of people in a specialty coffee shop asking the same question and also asking “do you presently have any coffee equipment in your home?” I just think we’re talking about non-overlapping circles here. I’m really impressed with the machine, and I have the money, but I’ve got gear already. And the people I know without gear would absolutely balk at the price. Hope this makes sense.
