This video shows a Building Bridges celebration held at the former Administration Building of the Golden Gate International Exposition (GGIE) on Treasure Island, San Francisco on February 18, 2021, the 82nd anniversary of the opening of the fair.
The event, and a special postal cancellation by the U.S. Postal Service, celebrated the fair’s theme of "Pacific Unity." The cancellation honored the Treasure Island Museum, which occupies a small part of the building, and the Peruvian Navy's tall ship BAP Union, which will make a bicentennial port call in San Francisco in June. The building became a special U.S. postal station for the day, and special collectable cachet postcards with the cancellation were produced. Speakers at the ceremony included the Consul General of Peru in San Francisco, the US Postmaster of San Francisco, and representatives of the museum and the Pacific Inter-Club Yachting Association (PICYA), which conducted a parade of over 50 boats circling the island on February 20, which is also seen in the video. The Consul General's predecessor spoke at the GGIE opening on February 18, 1939. PICYA sponsored an exhibit and regattas at the GGIE.
Building Bridges is a series of U.S. commemorative postal cancellations and events that celebrate special occasions, mostly on or near the water, and on and around the Bay, since 1996. The video was produced by the CMI Foundation.
