GH5 vs GX9- Do Bit Rates Matter?

Something I’ve wondered about for a long time but never looked into! Higher bit rates = more data, and more data is better right? Sort of! Another way of looking at this question is, are the G9, GH5 and GH5s higher bit rates worth paying extra over cameras like the G7, G85, G90, GX85 and GX9?

Just subscribed because I really like how your detailed approach is conclusive and focused on QUALITY, instead of just giving random ideas (like a lot of RU-vidrs do...which I still subscribe to at times, but I don't learn as quickly from such.)

I switched from a GH5 to a Sony a7III and the difference is absolutely massive. Almost nothing beats the GH5s image quality and everyone raving online about the mid range sony's is a liar. I'm trading this thing in for a Sony A7SIII tomorrow. Vlogging on a gh5 was hard because of crop factor, low light and autofocus, but the image quality was insane. I hate camera brand fan boys who will lie to peoples faces to promote an inferior product just because of something like auto focus.
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 2 года назад
Hehe thanks for dropping by! Yeah to be honest I'm not really surprised because even though the a73 is a bit newer than the gh5, I don't think the chip inside was significantly faster and I think that's what it comes down to between those 2 cameras- can the chips inside process the information fast enough so that it doesn't have to discard too much information from the sensor? In this case the small sensor should technically win with less information = less compromise in absolute quality! Anyway nice to see another m43 user, it seems that many have left the system!

The GX9 shooting 4k crops down to actual 3840x2160 pixels on the sensor, so you end up with a sensor area smaller than an RX100 pocket camera. That’s also why you see such a big crop in focal length. The GH5 (and G9 after 2.4 firmware update) use the entire sensor readout in 4k. In 1080 I believe the GX9 also uses the whole sensor, but for some stupid reason they won’t let you shoot 1080 at 24fps. I gave up on video with my GX9, just use the G9 now.

@@KimCruz1 Yeah I keep my sharpness at -5, sometimes add a little of sharpness in post and sometimes I don't even have to. Great work once again. Do you also mind doing a test on noise reduction(-5, -2, 0 default) since a lot of people say it is better to reduce noise reduction but I find -2 perfectly fine.

Thanks for such an in depth look at bit rates between the two cameras. I have a G9 + 100-400mm Leica mostly for sports and wildlife (BIF mostly) and have a secondhand GX9 coming for the sports closer action using my 14-140mm lens. Is there anywhere for Panasonic cameras at least where you can compare video bit rates etc? Is there a spreadsheet one can view anywhere? Otherwise it is such a huge task to manually do your own detailed comparison. Another highly regarded Panasonic camera for video was the FZ2500 which has some high bitrates.

I recorded a drive through the damage of hurricane Michael using a GoPro at 1080. I sped it up 16x and put it on RU-vid and was horrified at how much RU-vid crapified my video. I redid it at 8x and up-rendered it to 4K. When watching it on RU-vid at 4K it approaches the video quality I see on my computer when looking at the 1080 version. RU-vid allows more data per minute at 4K than at 1080. I did another drive through Dallas/Ft Worth and it wasn't crapified as much by RU-vid. The difference is all the trees needing a way higher bit rate in Florida versus blue skies in Texas. So if you're recording at 1080 you might want to convert it to 4K before uploading to RU-vid.

Hey I talked to you before about what camera to get. I followed your advice and bought a G9 and love it. However I noticed a crop on my lenses in 1080 and 4k and 1080 is worse than the 4k. The lenses look way wider on my g7. My first thought was it was from the stabilization but it is still there when I turn it off. Any ideas or is that just how it is?

It's nice to see there is a difference between bitrates, but it's something that depends heavily upon one's needs and intended use case. There is a part of me that's rather curious as to what the difference between a G7/G85/G95/GX9's recording 1080P at 28Mb/s and a GH5 recording 1080P at 200Mb/s would be, although I suspect in most cases that's probably going into overkill territory as you're now eating up 12GB of hard drive space for every minute of footage versus just 6GB at 100Mb/s or 1.68GB at 28Mb/s. I wonder if part of the reason for the difference in sharpness between the GX9 and GH5 is due to the oversampling the GH5 does, since it uses the full image sensor for capture. I do have to agree though, my my, that 400Mb/s footage..!!
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 4 года назад
White Wulfe hey man yeah so get this, firstly the entire video including tests were 100gb+, with render files it was close to 200gb (I recorded in 150mbs 4K to give as much detail to the footage as possible). Had a terrible time waiting for renders, waiting for export! I made a tiny mistake in my initial upload and wanted to upload again but had already deleted render files.. I exported again thinking (maybe 20 mins because usually it takes my Comp around 5-10 mins?) it took more than an hour to export! Point is, there's really a point where it gets too much like you said! If this was a high end project it would be worth the headache in terrible lag in my Comp while editing, render times, exports... Also really good point about oversampling , although I think that only applies in 4K (they both oversample for 1080p).. don't quote me on this lol. Last thing is codecs which also affect the quality! Btw man just thinking lately what the best cheap lens option for Astro would be? I'm still using the loawa 7.5 but wonder if there are better alternatives?

@@KimCruz1 Totally forgot to reply to this one, sorry about that! With astrophotography lenses, that's a good question, but sadly it's one at this time I can't answer with real world knowledge, as other things wound up taking priority for my hobbying money last year. Truth be told, right now I'm mostly doing visual astronomy as that's what I have gear for, but I'm hoping to at least acquire a tracking mount by the end of this year - it's just a case of getting the approximately $950 CAD saved up first (that price is for the mount, a ball head, and 1.5" tripod). Biggest hope is to finally get to try out those couple of thoughts I had regarding longer exposures on cameras that don't handle such so well, since the only camera I still have is my G85.

I just learned you exist. would it be possible for you to work on a video explaining the purpose of focal lens? Like I know 25mm is for portrait, 7mm is wide angle so I guess it's good for vlogs. But I don't know 35mm, or 14 or 17. everything plus 100mm I guess is for zoom but it is all very confusing. Thanks, love your content

There's no purpose in a lens. When you buy a lens, it's never labelled, "portrait lens" "architecture lens" "landscape lens" etc. They can all be used depending on the creative direction required. I like 35mm and 85mm (full frame terms) for everything, from landscapes to portraits. My boss likes 16mm for portraits cos the distortion is cool to them. If you're shooting to ignore the background, a tighter/longer focal length works better. If you want to capture more of the scene, more context, wider is better. So think about what story or narrative you want to tell with the photo/video. What do you want the viewer to focus on. What do you NOT want them to see?

And as I see here , all-i and longgop colors also are very different. I get colors just a little different, barely noticeable, but here I see very different results. A megabyte is a "package" of 8 megabits, a gigabyte is a "package" of 8 gigabits. Powers of 2 are extremely common in computing and a byte = 8 bits (2*2*2) ends up being really useful (albeit confusing) in descriptions of capacity and capability with computers.

Please note that this is just commentary from someone who sort of enjoys math - I'll post my other thoughts in a different comment just to keep them separate. I'm terrible at writing things in a manner that they can be read in a way that's more neutral, or positive by the person reading it, and meant this to come across as just a neutral kind of comment. ^_^;;; A few things to note - you regularly use lower case when talking about the abbreviated form for megabits - mega is shorthanded with uppercase, so megabit would be written as "Mb". Writing it as "mb" would imply milibits, which is a noticeably smaller number at one thousandth of a bit, versus a Mb, which would be one million bits. The annoying part though with math is when you convert from bits to bytes, because there's actually two measurement systems for data. While it is true that there are eight bits in one byte, we have two measurements for what constitues a megabyte. The first one is 2^20 (commonly abbreviated as 1024x1024, aka 1,048,576 bytes equalling one megabyte, or MB), and this is the original computer programming version. This number is represented in parenthesis on OS X as well as Windows. The confusion comes in when we go with what the storage industry decided was the "better" option, where one megabyte equals 1,000 kB, made more than likely under an assumption that such would be easier for people to understand. They tried to bring in their own wording for sizing in the form of kibibyte, mebibyte, and gibibyte (and kiB, MiB, and GiB units), however in common belief the storage industry's version overwrote the actual proper definition. This is why we have 500 GB hard drives that only store 465.6612 GB - the operating system is calculating it based upon the 2^20 methods as originally written - 500 billion bytes is equivalent to 465.6612 GB using the storage industry's definition.
@KimCruz1
@KimCruz1 4 года назад
White Wulfe man thanks for that that's really good to know! Basically it was two systems and now the storage industry has tried to make it just one system but still use it to inflate their storage space when it's convenient! Thanks man!
