Ghana: Journey to Self-Discovery 2016 - SFGovTV follows 12 San Francisco youth to Ghana to document their journey in the Operation Genesis program. www.operationgenesisinc.org
This documentary reminds me of the "Boys of Baraka". I saw the video years ago in my Sociology class. I would like to thank the organizers of this trip and encourage them to take different kids to Africa every year or so. Most Black Americans only know their house, their school, the playground and the mall of their neighborhood. They don't travel. There is an Akan proverbs that states that "he who does not travel never learns". You have to come out of your shell, go out to different places, see things for yourself, feel them; mingle with different people and learn. The kids in this video were surprised about the love they got while in Ghana. LOVE is a very strong word; love is money, love is happiness, love is caring, love is sharing, love is respect, love is peace. We are poor in Africa but we make it through the day everyday' happy and stress free all because of the love that we have for one another. There is no such a thing as love among African Americans. To Black Americans, you only have to love your immediate family and forget about the rest. I once said hi to a fellow black man and he got mad. He told me that I don't know him for me to greet him. I got scared and even thought he would pull a gun on me. I will end by saying this: Black America, Black Africa loves you so do not hesitate to visit Mother Africa!
well sir understand" all black American aren't alike" just like all Africans aren't alike, I"'ve come across some very rude African women who were here in America and I felt the same way u did, I was scared I thought they was going to put a curse on me just for saying hello. SMH
My girlfriend is from Ghana and I can not wait to go visit. Africa is beautiful and I would not think twice about leaving the states and moving there. Sign me up!
My goodness...we never finish learning! am from Mali 🇲🇱 I never know that some Malians move to Ghana centuries ago...thank you for all your efforts amazing students 🙏🏽😍🥰😘
@@jemimaeduah8013 Honored to meet you here, did Fante tribe have any relationship with MALI nowadays ? Actually in Mali we’ might call you BOZO, meaning the people living in/around the water! Great tribe, darker skin color coz of d sun maybe,nd a lot of knowledge of traditional medicine ! You’re welcome anytime a Bamako en famille!
Im a white UK male who visited Ghana for my second time in 2016, and visited all these places. I can vouch for everything said here being true. It a wonderful place with wonderful people.i spent time out there volunteering and met the most wonderful people. Poor in material things but rich in happiness. It really does make you re-evaluate things. My best friends are from Ghana and long to return for my fourth visit. I find it very powerful, but for those of black overseas origin returning , wow. Just wow.. The culture, the clothes the music, the dancing, the food (beware the fufu lol) the flora and fauna. It is a wonder and a JOY To any considering going, you will not regret it. And when you get there you will think, why didnt i come before. Regardless of race, just go , it is wonderful.
I really enjoyed watching this documentary because it was educational and inspiring. I'm looking forward to visiting my ancestors in Ghana one-day. I have nothing but love❤for the people there. Beautiful Continent and Beautiful people.
Pierre Toussaint Why is it that people that express their opinion have to be a devil. Who left you in charge of Yahs people to call them a devil. You don’t have the power or authority to do that. Some of you black people make me sick when you speak out of ignorance and can only convert to calling someone a name. I don’t accept negative names about me from anyone. I send it back to you.
I am a Ghanian living in Germany,,I thank the organisers who brought the students to know and learn.about the truth,, God Bless you all and well come back home.
The beautiful culture of my home. Remember living there as a kid, cause my dad wanted us to learn our culture and know where we are from. Ghana is a proud proud and unapologetically black African Nation. I love my people. PROUD ASHANTI
Well done everyone, Sister Nana here from Ghana, I'm really glad you all took this journey and I'm happy to see your positive transformations, even before you got back to America. We love you Brothers and Sisters, Don't forget where you came from, Welcome home, Akwaaba
I've vacationed in Uganda, but I want to go here just to experience this. And to think of the ignorance and materialism a lot of us Black Americans praise/live for just twists my heart and disgusts me. We HAVE to do better. All of us need to take this trip. We need to show our ancestors that their suffering was not in vain.
I just stumbled upon this wonderful video and ended up seeing my America Red Cross ex co-worker & pillar in the San Francisco community (Cheeko Wells) what a pleasant surprise!!! I was aware he went to Africa because I found out through his facebook post and I replied to his post because my daughter was in Kumasi Ghana during the same time, only she was there for 9 months attending her senior year of high school. I wasn't aware that Cheeko went to Africa with these amazing group of young people. My daughter had a wonderful experience, she loved the city of Accra because it was more of a city atmosphere.and she fell in love with her host family. Sometimes her host father will comment and like some of my post on Facebook LOL. I definitely want to go to Ghana in the near future. I am grateful to say that I will have connections through my daughter host family when I decide to go.
I like this video because it shows how all Africans in the diaspora should learn about their ancient history of their ancestors. Not to only to read from the books and schools - first hand experience. This is a lifetime experience for all these fellow African/Americans...nobody will ever tell lies about their history. Now they know who the white men are and what kind of a heart and mentality they have ever since they first appeared among the Africans. Well done!!!
Thank you all for this vlog! I've been trying to inspire my young people to consider visiting Africa. I thought, Why not just set an example for them and do it first? This video has really been helpful! God bless you all!
contressa40ish yyou should consider going. there are lots of 5 star lounges or hotels there that you can stay and then you can go out from there to visit the villages . parks etc.
You may see us poor but we don't see ourselves so. poverty is a mental condition, the absence of luxury does not make a people poor. we're a bunch of grateful people.
Kumi Bebu This is not about rich or poor this is about us coming together spending time with each other getting to know each other better once we do that we can work on other things that needs to be done love from the US.
Great documentary...It's so nice to see the kids going to visit Ghana & to be educated & enlightened on things that we are taught incorrectly in the states... Visiting Ghana is positively life changing
Very nice documentary ! Knowing your roots, and your history, and culture makes you stronger part of something bigger that's called ethnos and you meet your real brothers.
Black Americans should do a lot of this. Africa is their roots. Its also very important that Black Americans see the importance of investing in Africa. White people ain't gonna do shit for us. Period.
To all genesis team.. Thank you and I was excited to see young Africans from Amerikka recognise the essence of cultures and custom.Keep doing the brilliant work.To OFC Leone and his team.. Welcome home.
I absolutely am thinking about moving to Africa. Especially with all this police brutality & crime. I'd fit in perfectly & I'll settle for what I'm not used to. I can adjust easy. To me that's home. I know it in my heart. No pressure ALL LOVE ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️✊🏾
That was absolutely amazing! On behalf of future trip for the children I thank you Officer Johnson and Officer Jackson for your gift of exposure to a culture our children were unaware they are a part of... Thank you for giving them dimension. May the force of greatness and goodness remain with you and all the members that contribute to the amazing experience of enlightenment, thank you all.
So you know yall made me cry atleast twice during this documentary right? lol, beautiful job guys! I really enjoyed...Keep up the good work, peace and love to you..✊💚❤💙✊
I'm grateful these young people had the opportunity to see how blessed they are in the states. And learned some truths and shed some lies of how Africa is. If they travel back in Black American history, they would see, it was that way and worse for their ancestors. It's because of their fight is why they "have." Kudos to the teachers and those who made this trip possible for these young ones. It's a life altering lesson indeed. 💕🙏🏽✌🏽
LINDA B right on sista it is a shame every other ethnic group are in touch with their heritage we need to teach our kids about our african culture and to have love for our people on the african continent despite the negative images american n western media portrays
This person speaking use to live in Sacramento Ca. Guess to living his dream joining us to our ppl in Africa! Praise The Lord for all that made it possible! We need to start this connection And keep it Going ! We need to start to fund for our children in America to do this "Our" School system! Thank YAH for U All ! Shalom to All my people!

JuliePastry.com Ghana ??? I want to know how come the slave castle is still in Ghana's existence and NOT demolished. The reason I say that is this castle was build to harm the African ppl NOT to help, but yet your country hang on to it. In America there were statues of Caucasians that offended the AA culture so they were destroyed. These statues represented horrific events that occurred against AA. I don't understand why the castle cannot be demolished and then something that represents Ghanaians in an uplifting way be built in its place. I have seen AA travel to Ghana from young to old go to that castle feeling sad, distraught, broken, and in tears. We all know that history repeats itself, but do Ghana really want to leave the oppressors legacy alive for the atrocities to repeat? I want to understand the importance of hanging on to the oppressors legacy in Ghana. The castle reminds us all that their was some demonized people that saw other human beings as property to profit them. To this day they still believe that. The prison system in America is a multi-billion dollar industry and most if not all are AA men/women doing big jobs for .5 cents or less while the owners of these prison make💰💰💰on the backs of AA. Nothing has changed. Please explain the reason that castle still matters to Ghanaians!
@@neeuqamilam1170 Seriously?? if the forts were demolished then it would be easier for all those who are currently denying it happened to say so. Do you not see that it is an important point of contact in the journey of return, for so many people of the diaspora. Finally They are able to enter through the Door of Return, to complete the journey their ancestors never finished when they exited the continent through the door of no return?
History.has lots to tell..welldone to the officer who organized the trip of students to my Country Ghana. It's a life change and lessons to Mankind.. Never shall such a Barbaric act happens again ..God made us all equal.
Listening to these young people’s comments let us know how powerful the media is in shaping our minds and opinions. They believed Africa was like what they see in Tarzan. Europeans don’t want Black people to know what’s going on in Africa. They could have taken them to malls and more developed parts of Africa. Africa has beautiful countries.
Gosh ,the hatred is real here.Tis even more astounding that someone has the username containing "Loveof the most high" yet they have nothing but hatred...God ain't like that.
Personally, I don't think they need school because they already know everything to survive. They know how to build houses, they know how to cook, they know how to cultivate their land, they, know how to make clothes, they know how to fish. They know how to do everything that's important.the things we learned in school in America it's nothing compared to all the knowledge they have in Ghana.
@@goldenheart751 they definatly need both.. Without a good education how would they become and aspire to be more than a people that work the land. Education is crucial for liberating people to have the choice to become doctors and scientists.. And for women too it is the life line for a better life...
@@fionafoster9225 They already know about naturalpathic medicines. They don't need that SHIT that the west has to offer. There is NO real education in America or Europe. The medicinal ingredients comes from Africa. There is NO better life than to be seperated from the poisons that the west has to offer. Their life is much better than anyone on the face of this earth.
greetings from Ghana! I moved from the US.. this was an excellent experience for all of you,,,but why did you not take them to Accra? Ghana University? Malls? if not they did not see Ghana
Why are y'all so damn shame? Accura is not Ghana. The malls are not Ghana. The people are Ghana. You don't think they can see malls in America? You think they flew all the way to Africa to see malls? They went to EXPERIENCE CULTURE, EXPERIENCE the people. Accura is not all that. Accura world not have an impact on these kids like this trip did.
you went to the villages, why didn't you go to the cities and the best schools they have there.. you will meet rich kids who live better than some Americans. be wise and see the difference.
wisdom prayerful yes thats what im.thinking. they need to get the full picture. some people are living in a mansion that in america will be more than 1 million.
PattyHP You know it's not as difficult as you think. Your first plan of action GET A PASSPORT!Then, at least you know you are able to travel anywhere at anytime. Research your country of choice......If it's Ghana, all US dollars are exchanged in cedis, the currency of Ghana. You can enjoy GH and not go broke. Start saving money. God willing you will make it to GH.
Urgh!! This is what i have longed wanted to happen. The African american world being able to come over to come experience what it is like over in Africa. We are all one and beautiful. We need more of this happening, am personally gonna be an advocate for this course. We need to learn together. I slept and left my RU-vid on and this video pops up especially during this time with all what is happening. Very informative and there is way more to it than they even saw. Come Home, you are loved dear..............
I think the youth had a good experience but I would hope for the organizers and planners to put in more site seeing places for people doing the tour to have a good picture of Africa. It feels like the goal of the trip was to have the youth appreciate what they have here in America as African Americans in order to change their mental attitude toward each other, rather than portraying the rich and beautiful side of Africa. Africans are poor and not able to take full advantage of our resources because we don't have the knowledge and the technology but we are always happy with whatever we have and love our people. Over here in the States, people have everything, yet they have so much hatred going on and almost always stressful about every little thing. I hope the youth learned something from their trip to shape their future and their relationship with their people and others.
Great video, quite informative, refreshing and educative, please continue this programme for it's extremely helpful for both the journey takers and the youtube watchers like me! Thanks once again for this great programme!!
Their prior impression of Ghana made me really sad.It told me they don't study ,research and learn and they were going to Ghana with an internalized soft bigotry of low expectations.Cue the boy @7:00, the girl @11:30 and the next girl @ 11:55.
I don't really know how to feel about this video. On one hand the documentary is one-sided since it's all about stereotypes attached to Africa (that the media already portrays), on the other side it's inspiring and moving to watch the end of the video.
Yall check out Native Borne. They are an African American couple living in Ghana with their 5 children. Dreama of Africa in Alabama, Sylvaine Diouf This is about the last enslaved Africans who were brought to Mobile, Alabama illegal. What make them so interesting is they tell their stories.
While this trip was ok. I wish the children could have also seen well established progressive people and areas of Accra. We see enough of black people's being down trodden, slaves etc. We should want Africans all over the world to come back and help build up Africa. For Americans, they need to see that they can have a great life in Africa.
The response from the young Americans about their expectations of Africa tells us how powerful the media is. This is why as parents we must teach our own children by doing research ourselves about us and about Africa. This way whatever they see on television will not shape their minds like that. Black people must research their culture and teach our children. I grew up thinking about Africa the just like these young people. America doesn’t want us to know about our country or to connect with our people. It would have been good for these young people to see how well Africans are doing as well and some of the affluent areas of Africa. This video only portrays the stereotype that Africa and its people are very poor when so many of them live great lives and have done well even with their education. It’s good this video showed this side of Africa but there’s a successful side too that they could have been exposed to and know that there’s two sides to Africa just like America or any other country. People like to show Black people in America being poor and poor black people all around the world. You rarely see a video about Black people doing well.
