As Dimitrova argued one day with A. Duault, "dramatic" sopranos didn't exist at Puccini's epoch...the terminology is somewhat new. She always considered herself as a "lirico spinto". She preferred Manon Lescaut and many other roles to Tosca, which is perfectly suit to her, it could have been written for her. Listen to her in Caracas in that same opera... and to the public's reaction! She was totally underrated when she was alive, and had so many obstacles on her path, while people who didn't even had the third of her talent made carriers. I hope that the future will give her right, against all those who tried to destroy her and didn't succeed to do so!!!
Barbov Mario indeed! I think she was the best soprano of the 20 century. However, the best doesn’t mean the greatest - the greatest is usually the most promoted one, as in case with Callas
@@artemsmirnov7067 Callas once said that she didn't like herself, as a voice as well as a woman. She was highly critical about herself, much more than her fans or critics. But she was like a goddess, no matter her defects or imperfections. One has the impression, hearing Dimitrova, that she lives the role which seems to have been written for her. I think she lived in an epoch when opera was already on decline. So she hadn't had the great privilege that made Maria Callas: great conductors as Serafin, great partners as Corelli , and a public able to understand with their hearts and to love each other. Music as Furtwaengler put it once is the capacity to love. It cannot be explained with words

Tante volte sentita in teatro, video come questo mi fanno immancabilmente venire le lacrime
Tutte le volte quando la ascolto mi commuove. E davvero straordinaria. Visto che sono una grande amante della lirica e giro anche x il mondo ascoltarla e vederla, pensando che sono nata a pochi km da dove e nata lei mi vergogno che non sono andata oncora vedere la casa sua natale e sapere di più. Ghena was a really stupendous Tosca! I saw her many times in this role: always regal, absolutely secure and spontaneous in every tone and gesture. Fascinating Tosca! Rest in pieice, dear Ghena.
Someone commented that she sings here too loud all the time. I can only say, if the conductor allows the strings to play fff the whole time, what choice does the soprano have. Everywhere in the score is written pp and ppp. The loudest dynamic indicated by Puccini is forte, and that happens exactly three times (and then only where the voice is above the staff) with an IMMEDIATE decrescendo afterwards. Dimitrova was a stupendous Tosca - vocally and dramatically.
Stupendous is the word indeed...I think she was perfectly matched for that role of which she gave the best vocal rendition ever IN VIVO!!! Or is not that opera?!!
Hi! She provoked a lot of envy ,because she was the last one ,who really had...VOICE,REAL,HUGE & DRAMMATIC.There are conservatories in Germany ,that dont accept dram.voices.They dont know how to develop them..She doesnt sing loud.It was the kind of her voice. The last of the great singers
As i watch this i have tears in my eyes for this public tribute and ovation could not have happened to a more warm and kind hearted artist than Ghena Dimitrova - and coming from an audience as discerning as the Rome Opera. I do hope that her singing will always be remembered. She was unique. Please understand that she was a sensitive artist who worked consistently to sing piano with that massive voice of hers. This is a great moment in operatic history - let's not criticize- but let's enjoy it as an outpouring of voice and emotion. We will not hear her like again. Rest in peace Ghena.

Era il 1986, lei era impegnata a Napoli con la norma. A Roma in quel mentre si allestiva questa tosca. Shirley verret cadde sotto i fischi alla prima. Lei che era a Napoli fu chiamata a sostituirla, senza prove, all’improvviso. Questa sera, quella del bis, si tenne se non ricordo male fra la prova generale di norma (alla quale partecipai fra le prime file della platea) e la prima. Credo fossero i primi di marzo, ma sul periodo esatto potrei sbagliarmi (però dovrei avere modo di recuperare il dato).
Fagianellina you make a confusion with this Tosca in Roma in march 1992. She replaced another singer (don't remember who). Just few days before, she was Gioconda , always in Rome. She replaced Verrett in Rome in fabruary 1987 for Macbeth (Verrett was lessvoice for the opening performance, try to "sing" 3minutes but was so booed that the entirely performance was cancelled). Dimitrova was rehearsaled Norma in Naeples and replaced Verrett for few representations, Elizabeth Connell for the others. Are you Alessandra? I am Laurent...

Come dev'essere difficile ricreare un minuto dopo averlo cantato, un brano, ridandole la stessa atmosfera! I bis dovrebbero essere proibiti, ma questo "Vissi d'arte" è davvero splendido e merita un bis, anche se interrompe l'azione drammatica e scenica. Grande Dimitrova, allenata nella scuola dell'indontabile ed intramontabile Cigna! Leggendarie!
Grande Ghena, eccelsa in questo commovente brano. Incomparabile !!!!!! Tanto più dopo averla ascoltata dal vivo. Peccato siano soltanto ricordi, pur se bellissimi.

I concur, assindiastignani! Dramatic Sopranos' voices are built to carry over an entire orchestra, and if the orchestra is playing fff, you must sing louder, to be heard, all the way to the back of the theatre!
@amlirco I agree that her 1994 Met performance is quite wonderful. I remember reading lukewarm reviews at the time, so I did not have high hopes for this recording. Imagine my surprise! Gorgeous, full sound, rock-solid high notes! It's nice to see her so involved and expressive.

I personally prefer her Met interpretation (1994). Here, to my mind, she rushes a bit or maybe it's the conductor. More p/pp would be perfect. Grande Ghena!

Ghena è splendida come Principessa Turandot, per quanto riguarda Puccini. Mi rendo conto di ascoltare una registrazione e di non essere lì dal vivo. Però, con "questo" Puccini c'è poco da improvvisare: per me non va bene. Non è sentimentalmente all'interno del processo psicologico di questo "enorme" personaggio. Qualcosa non va...
Non tutto il pubblico che l'ha sentita dal VIVO era poi tanto entusiasta. Ho sentito molti buu. Alle volte gli applausi possono essere comperati e in genere i buu sono gratis.
