Lorenzo Ghiberti, "Gates of Paradise," East Doors of the Florence Baptistery, bronze, 1425-52. Speakers: Dr. Steven Zucker and Dr. Beth Harris. Created by Beth Harris and Steven Zucker.
I’ve been so blessed to have had the opportunity to learn from such wonderful and inspiring teachers. My high school AP art history teacher, the class that got me into art history to begin with years ago, used to show us these Khan Academy videos. They are still helpful and doubly as enjoyable today! Thank you so much!
Thank you for providing such a clear description of these beautiful doors, and the history behind them. It's simply fascinating. I'll be looking for more of your videos.
You can find all of our work on smarthistory.org/ but since you liked the Ghiberti, you might be interested in our video on the competition panels made by Filippo Brunelleschi and Lorenzo Ghiberti, The Sacrifice of Isaac, for the earlier commission for the Baptistry. You can find it on Smarthistory.org here: smarthistory.org/filippo-brunelleschi-and-lorenzo-ghiberti-sacrifice-of-isaac/
I can't imagine seeing this building. The details are incredible - I'd get stuck there. Aside from having a very cool name, rilievo schiacciato creates a lot of visual interest in the examples I've seen so far. I appreciate the unexpected Bible lesson on Esau and Jacob, lol. So much detail in that one panel - IYKYK.
Pretty please if there is any chance please revisit this masterpiece and explain other plates too...The camera work on this was very good and detailed.
