Ghost Covers Gotye - 'Somebody That I Used To Know'

I know it was probably before your time, but did you even see the movie "Ghost"? The shirtless male character is entirely appropriate. You should at least understand the subject matter before being critical. And good grief woman, compared to most videos out there this isn't even rated G. I'm as straight as they come and don't feel the least bit awkward that a guy is "omg topless" while singing...

Reclaimer77 I dont' care about being topless or anything like that at all or awkward, I don't mind sexualization. For me, analysing the song, and the performance style of this group, I just thought it was a bit commercial, and compromised the true authenticity of the piece. Gotye is shirtless in his video, for example, yet he isn't being sexualised or made the focal point, because in it his nakedness is encompassing some sort of vulnerability and angst which is a pretty accurate manifestation of the song itself, I would imagine. I think in this case, it's redundant and confusing, especially with their being so many shots that emphasis his torso haha like maybe cover 'I'm too sexy' or something. I don't feel it real, or authentic. I guess it's pointless of my to rattle on about that kind of thing when it's just some people having fun doing a cover. It just frustrates me when people take as a serious display of talent or artistry which I just think it isn't

Risa Craig But "Ghost" is a highly sensually themed movie. It has probably one of the most iconic lovemaking scenes in a Hollywood film to this day. A great love affair was cut short by the male leads untimely murder, and their love was so strong he hung around as a spirit until they both got closure bla bla bla, you know the rest. I would have to see the whole musical to judge their performance and style. This is just a video. I get where you're coming from, but I feel in the theme of the movie "Ghost", this is an appropriate and on-theme use of a shirtless male lead. But hey, different opinions make the world go-round :)

In addition to what Risa has said about Mark overacting, it also strikes me that Siobhan is being too sassy and "What ever" with her part. And weirdly they are copying the voice styles of Gotye and Kimbra, instead of singing it in their vocal styles.

***** You clearly just don't know what autotune is or just don't have an idea of what makes a voice "autotuned". The only part that has serious audio editing is the chorus but it's the same effect with the chorus in the original. Though it's pretty easy to tell that these people can sing and aren't relying on a "T-Pain device".

***** The high notes are during the chorus, which uses the same autotuning effect as the original does during the chorus. Whether he's using the autotune to cover the fact that he can't sing those notes or not, at the end of the day the original song uses the same effect. My initial point was that compared to the original, there's not much difference in how much autotuning is used. I'm not even a fangirl. I don't care for the cover much either but "too much autotune" is definately not the reason.

Do you have any evidence and plus how would you know they used the same audio effects?

No it isn't difficult to cover this song... if you can sing. You don't have to make a carbon copy, that is the whole point of covers... same song, different voice/interpretation. Anyone who uses autotune in the place of a natural voice is a fake. Pure and simple.

Reclaimer77 I don;t think this song would be difficult to cover without autotune at ALL, and it upsets me a bit that that conception is so common nowadays, as it means people clearly aren't seeing the intense spectrum of truly talented artists and musicians. too easy for mediocre talent to be over appreciated. Contrary to popular trends, there ARE artists that exist that can sing pitch perfect live and sing with intense integrity and truth with their story telling.

Risa Craig Fair point. But let me just say I do NOT hear autotune used here. I hear and effect that doubles his voice, but I don't hear that tell-tale "autotune" effect. Frankly I hate autotune, so I wouldn't respect this cover if it was used. I feel this is a good cover with it's own style, and people are being really unfairly harsh here imo.
