Ghost in the Shell: When the Future Turns Against Humanity 

The title "ghost in the shell" alone is so revealing. Since the "ghost" is a well-defined entity in the movie, it is not meant in a satirical manner. And regardless of the metaphysical implications of that "ghost", the body is definitely reduced to a mere "shell".

The ending was always too unsettling to me, great to finally know why thanks to your precise dissection. There is a series adaptation called stand alone complex, maybe also something worth your time some day?

I also love and am perturbed by GIST - and Innocence - and can't help but interpret Motoko's decision to merge with the Puppetmaster in the sense of flawed decisions, perhaps free, perhaps not, for unknown change or transcendence and possible negative outcomes. The film seems to say it's a risk, and there's no guarantee of success, and new is not always better - in the same way that the pure cyber entities in Neuromancer like Wintermute, and Legba, are all-too-human in their hubris and flaws. Motoko's choice is jarring, because her spiel to Bato is far more measured: "There are countless ingredients that make up the human body and mind, like all the components that make up me as an individual with my own personality. Sure, I have a face and voice to distinguish myself from others, but my thoughts and memories are unique only to me, and I carry a sense of my own destiny. Each of those things are just a small part of it. I collect information to use in my own way. All of that blends to create a mixture that forms me and gives rise to my conscience. I feel confined, only free to expand myself within boundaries." So, maybe it's a choice between one prison and another? Motoko may or may not understand that leaping into the unknown may curtail her choices... Dunno. In Jungian terms, she cannot face her Shadow and overcome if she's only machine. (Right?) Your point on accelerationism is bang on - in GIST and even more in Innocence there's a relentless depiction of degraded and vile humanity, nothing but exploitation, kidnappings, power games, extortion, revolts, deception, brutality toward children and so on. The cyber cops win, kind of. But there's precious little to root for. It's all pretty bleak, and to an extent the tv show / SAC and Arise give us a domesticated version. I would love to see a grown-up film series tho... PS excellent initial montage, including Ergo Proxy. Awesome show.

As always a wonderful upload! It’s always worth the wait to be rewarded with your insight into the current state of the world. Ghost in the Shell is still one of the greatest pieces of art/ vision/ dystopian stories ever written. May I suggest you look into the art, writing and talks by James Tunney ( you may have already) his book TechBondAge: Slavery of the Human Spirit addresses this very issue. Techhbondage transhumanism, we yield our sovereignty to those that will dominate us through control of networks, tech-cage and electronic strightjackets.
