Ghost Ship Arrival

Coming in mostly blind and running on instruments and experience. She was only visible for a few minutes before she disappeared again, the John G Munson arrived on 12/23/23 in dense fog. It’s an eerie feeling, knowing something that size is out there and coming at you, but you can’t see it! She loaded iron ore pellets and departed the next day, her last cargo run of the season to Duluth, but she would arrive again a couple weeks later for winter layup. This isn’t the foggiest I’ve ever seen it, but it was the thickest of the season, and at 2pm (usually the clearest time of day) which made it a bit strange!

Ir was eerily beautiful watching John G slowly emerge frome the fog and sea smoke that morning. I've never seen the bridge coming down from that vantage point before. Very cool. Great video, Jonathon. ✌️🍁

Always love dense fog at the canal, it’s always fascinating and beautiful! I suppose, a lot of videos end before the bridge is down, I’ll have to remember that! Glad you enjoyed :)

Munson has a great horn, second only to the Barker in my opinion

Sea smoke. The water is warmer than the air. I live in Silver Bay and Duluth.

Mostly regular fog, maybe some sea smoke in there as well. Left town for Christmas immediately after this, it was at least this dense and even thicker in some places all the way until Moose Lake, almost 50 miles away.

Slightly different weather hazard but no less challenging, especially back in the days before modern instruments!

This video is almost perfect! The Munson’s horn goes perfect with the theme of a ghost ship coming out of the fog and announcing themselves. The horn sounds like a bass wail, but higher than the JRB or the PRT. Does anyone know who is the Captain of the Munson? Because he timed that horn perfectly.

Thank you!! I’m not certain who the captain is, but like Barker he uses that horn to maximum effect. Munson was known for having the best salute on the Lakes for a good 50 years before Barker got her dual horn in the late 2000s. As far as horns go, I’d rank them: 1- Barker, 2- Munson, 3- Cort (stern horn) 4- Tregurtha, 5- Great Republic (which sounds really amazing in person but not on camera for whatever reason)

@@patroberts5449 ah, no, although the Soo Locks lead into Lake Superior on the other side from here, I was just a bit confused from the context 😂. No this is the Duluth Canal, which leads into the harbor from Lake Superior. It’s an artificial channel that was dug to improve access to the Minnesota side of the harbor, but the water is all the same level, so no need for a lock system
