Hello everyone and welcome back to another video!
In this episode, we head back to the Mascot Gold Mine to explore deeper into the mountain. This mine exploration was definitely one of our more challenging adventures, as this mine has over 67 kilometres of tunnels. We spent a few hours exploring and didn’t even put a dent in it. With the cold temperatures effecting our flashlights and camera gear, we had to end our explore sooner than expected, but we’ll be back! If you’re Interested in seeing the tour of the buildings, here is a link to our first trip to this amazing place:
• Mascot Mine | Hedley B...
Duncan Woods, described as a down and out prospector, arrived to Nickel Plate Mountain to find out that he was once again late for the party as the ground in the area had already been staked up. Not the kind to easily give up, looking at maps he noticed a small 40 or so acre sliver of ground that hadn’t been claimed. Calling it the Mascot, the terrain was very steep and the work was hard, but Duncan kept looking for his gold. In 1904, the Daly Reduction Company, which owned the claims surrounding Woods’ and operated the Nickel Plate Mine, discovered that their main ore body angled into Duncan’s claim and the superintendent Jones, approached him to purchase it. No one knows what was said, but Duncan refused to ever sell if Jones was involved. Refusing to sell to his rivals, in 1933 Duncan sold the Mascot to a group of investors from Vancouver and they started the Hedley Mascot Gold Mine. The tramway was constructed, and was 4700 feet in length, ran at an angle of about 40 degrees and was one of the largest in the world. The majority of production took place between 1936 and 1949 producing over 7 tones of gold valuing an astonishing $130 million dollars today.

I worked as a first aid attendant at that mine in the early 80's, when they were re-exploring to see if there was more gold to be found. On a day off I scrambled down the slope (there were no stairs then and the whole place was in shambles) I only went a little way into a shaft because I had no flashlight. I drove the steep, windy road up regularly, from the Hedley side, until nearly Christmas. When it was too snowy, I would come around the Mt Apex way.

I was a miner for 43 years in Northern Ontario and we used Koehler Wheat lights for our head lamps, many mines do to this day, anyways the last over 12 hours, personally I would a dedicated miner's head lamp as my primary light source when doing exploration IMO. Great video I really enjoyed it as I always wanted to know about this particular mine, thanks!

Hello Fredrick, glad you enjoyed seeing this one. We have a few videos of this mine, including one of us exploring all of the buildings if you’re interested! Just curious, how many lumens would a miners headlamp be? With all of our flashlights and our headlamps, we run around 10,000 lumens and sometimes it’s still not enough depending on the size lol We’re actually from Ontario too. Glad you made it out each day on the job. Mining is such a risky and unpredictable job!

I see the rope is still in there that we left at the raise. If you go to the left at the top of the rope that is where the bad air is. If you would have stayed to the right instead of going out the exit you would have found the coolest part of the mine where the two inclined shafts start. One going up the the pit and the other down 600 feet as well as the hoist room!
@AdventuresRUs

Thanks for watching Frank and sharing some intel. We were wondering if that was your rope. We wanted to spend more time there, we saw your videos, but we got a late start and our gear was failing us. lol We ended up in the dark on the way back down to the car. Hope you and Sharon are doing well, thanks again for your support.

Thank you for stopping by our channel, watching and leaving a comment:) We appreciate it! Yes, stories of the past certainly can make one wonder. We often find ourselves thinking about what life would have been like, living during those times. Especially for the mining community, life sure could be difficult. Long, dangerous and hard days working underground, for little pay. It was the owners who made out well for the most part. In this mine particularly, employees were well treated and happy though, so that’s nice to hear. Take care

According to all the vids I've seen, after reading over a hundred magazine articles about gold mines.... 1) if you can see quartz vanes then there is still gold, as gold got trapped by the quartz ( which I understand to be as the Earth formed ) . 2) Also the yellow, tannish patches on the walls where iron deposits have corroded & drizzled down ( as Earth's gravity pulls at everything )...the iron corrossion is interacting with gold deposits which causes the yellow patches with rusty reddish hues. Whether or not its worth excavating commercially is another consideration.
@AdventuresRUs

Yes, lots of sulphides in there and new material is exposed each time the back of the mine fails. Unfortunately there are too many easy ways to make money these days and the cost of operation on mine sites is just not economical anymore. Open pit mining operations seem to be more common these days though.

Along the old route 666 between Shiprock and Gallup, NM (only a few miles south of Shiprock as I recall) as there is a dirt road that goes off towards the mountains. Following that road takes you up into the mountains along an old road bed. There are rock falls and trees growing up in it but if you can get to the end you will find a HUGE mine on the back side of the mountain at the top. The mine goes through the mountain and exits the other side in several places. There are old cars and equipment, even a case of unexploded dynamite (don't touch it... sweating badly) and lots of infrastructure. The wind howls through the tunnels and there are lots of them. In the 1970s my father, a friend and I explored this place. I found out many years later that it is one of the major mines used to mine Uranium for the first atomic bombs. If you look off across the valley from the entrance you will see a large concrete slab surrounded by a fence. That is where they buried the radioactive debris from all the activity.

I worked in Hedley for 2 years in the 80's working with youth on probation. We used to hike up the tram line and then have races running down from the top to the very bottom. Before the open pit mine one could drive very close to Upper Mascot Mine and venture deep into the mine. On some of the dynamite sheds you were looking at are my initials w/ a date. It's the only place that in one walk up 9 Mile Creek my then fiancé, 6 youth and myself saw a Mountain Goat, a rattle snake with a toad in its mouth swimming its way down the creek and finally being stocked by a cougar. We escaped the cougar by making our way through deep water and up the West side of the river Bank to the shelf above.

The Kettle Valley Railroad line, a CPR subsidiary, and a Great Northern Railway subsidiary called the Vancouver Victoria and Eastern built a joint line from Hope BC to Oroville WA in 1909. KVR owned the Hope to Princeton part and the VV&E owned the Princeton to Oroville part. Although the VV&E had rights over the Princeton Hope section and on to Vancouver on the CPR they only ever operated one train over it. In 1934 the tracks between Hedley and Princeton were heavily damaged by high water. This section was never repaired and was abandoned in 1939. Much of Highway 3 between Hedley and Princeton follows the grade of the Great Northern (VV&E). The Great Northern was forced to maintain service much longer than they had desired and with the closure of the mines in Hedley in 1955, the track was lifted to Keremeos. In 1972, spring floods damaged many bridges along the Similkameen River, causing Burlington Northern, the Great Northern successor, to abandon between Oroville WA. and Keremeos BC. I believe a company is still re-refining the tailings from the mine as new processes allow more gold to be extracted from them.

I think that those were the end that went into the drill and not the bits,they look like the drilling end but it wouldn't make sense that they were facing in that.direction.I think they got the bits stuck and left them in knowing the mine was about to close.But I could be.wrong.Great video thank you.

Hello Sue, Thank you for stopping by our channel, watching and commenting:) Beyond the original fork, you may come to several crosscuts and may not even come back the way you went. We often place arrows, recognizable to us, just so when seen, we know we were there and know the fastest way back out. Often we’re on the last of our battery power when ending an explore and you wouldn’t want to waste time taking the wrong turn at any time. :) During other explores, can’t tell you how comforting it is to see a marker we’ve left after being underground for 6 hrs or more lol

A lot of ppl end up leaving them behind if they don’t retrace their steps. We don’t like the idea of possibly leaving garbage behind. We leave markers as we go along the way, made out of garbage, wood or arrows in the mud. Haven’t gotten lost yet:)

Thank you for your comment! Fortunately it’s not the type of situation where that could happen, the water that seeps in comes through the mountain in little voids in the rock. It’s not a spot we’d be particularly interested in hanging around in too long anyways!! 😳 It’s not something we’ll be doing anytime soon though, it never emptied enough to get in. Thanks for watching and mentioning that!
