I grew up in Gallitzin and still live in the area. My grandfather, who served in WW2, grew up in Bennington. The town didn't really go away until after the Red Arrow wreck of 1947. I have relatives buried in the graveyard and have visited it a few times. My uncle cut the grass of the graveyard. He is 74 now so I don't think he still does it. This and the other video on Bennington were excellent. Things I have never seen. Thanks.

Thank YOU for watching. One of the reasons I kicked off this channel is because of these locations being things you either 1. never saw, or 2. saw out of the corner of your eye and thought "I wonder what that use to be".

I am not from Pennsylvania, but there is so much history to share, you do an excellent job. Very nice! Thank you for another fantastic tour. Just found your channel a couple of days ago, what a find!

Love your videos. Grew up in Altoona and my Dad talked about Glenn White and I was always fascinated by it. Didn't know about Bennington though. Thank you so much.

The whole area has hidden history just a few inches below the soil.

I try to stay away from the "popular" ones or the ones that are NOT hidden and abandoned.

Thank you for making these videos! I visited Glenn White this weekend and they were amazing!

Coke was pure carbon. Coal burned in a reduced oxygen process - like making char from hardwood. Added to make steel after the excess iron was driven off in a blast furnace. Johnstown was biggest steel maker before the Johnstown Flood. After which, Andrew Carnegie founded a larger steel making business in the Pittsburgh area. There are also old coke ovens near the Horshoe Curve in the abandoned town of Glen White, where coal mines were located. Also, Glen White has two abandoned cemeteries.

Two abandoned cemeteries? I know of three burials which were found all together. Do you know of others?

Pennsylvania is littered with abandoned cemeteries. I visited one in between Glasgow PA & FallenTImber PA

I used to live a few mtn tops over and it gets wicked on the mtn. Long johns are your best friend out there. I train watch all over there. 3 track main. Used to be 4 up until mid Conrail era.

It does get cold and windy, but being a local makes your skin tougher.

Wow... I grew up in Cresson and drove Sugar Run to get to Altoona, but I never knew about Bennington or the coke ovens there.

Thanks for the video! Just discovered this channel i wondered what these were when we drove up there to see trains as we do every summer as i live near Pittsburgh this is very fascinating thanks! We even saw a Porcupine in one

When I went into one it was about 28 degrees outside and I quickly warmed up to about 35+... so yeah, I am sure the Porcupines might dip in there to escape weather issues.

So I added it to my list after we spoke last. It will come, but... I have a minor issue. When I went out to see Ghost Town of Bennington, I did not expect to find these fella's, or the story of Red Arrow, or the Glen White ovens, or the whole story of the PA Canal Ending right there at Horseshoe Curve, or all the other things at Horseshoe Curve, or the weird little amusement park at the top of the hill, or the early 1800's tunnel going under the railroad... just so many things popped up. I even went to where the Wopsononock Hotel was located and found more than radio towers. Now I am at a point where I need to prioritize based on how bad do I want to "see it, go there, travel through". I keep laughing because it almost seems like I cannot get out of my back yard. LOL

I could even do a video on how many times JustLes has almost bounced her head off the dashboard because of my quick stops, when something catches my eye.

A wonderful story that unfortunately did not have a lot of remnants. Sometimes, that is what I will be running across when I do these "site unseen" videos. Usually, if I look hard enough and use satellite, I can find something that others missed.

Where were the coke ovens that fed the Johnstown blast furnaces?
@ODDySEEy
@ODDySEEy 3 года назад
Most people will tell you to visit Cambria Iron & Steel, but those in the know will tell you to go out to Rosedale Coke and those who read the books from way back when will tell you to go all the way to Saxton in Huntingdon County and visit the Minersville Coke Ovens because that is where they purchased the vast majority of their Coke from and then shipped it back over to Johnstown. It was the cheapest.

I could see that happening on Bank 2 (the ones at the end of the video). Small entrances into large caves. And even the one I went into was oddly warm.

Very cool. It’s remarkable that we didn’t see any trash until near the end of the video. Also, that the graffiti *artists* haven’t yet destroyed the ovens. Or that the safety nazis haven’t fenced the area off. Thanks for making the video.
@ODDySEEy
@ODDySEEy 4 года назад
Safety Nazis... yeah... they went out after my video was published and are starting to put signs up. But, the beauty of the internet allows me to see sites that, even if signs "appear" to be blocking access, are only blocking the traversal access and NOT the site access. ;) There is always a LEGAL way around a fence.
