I like hearing your thoughts. I’ll probably wait until disc or streaming, but I’m not sure. I saw Afterlife with my mother on our Christmas shopping day and we both afterwards were like “okay.”

Yes Heath I love your short reviews. And about this new Ghostbusters, I love having the original cast back. I agree if they want to pass the torch on to a newer generation, that’s fine but just not kids. Have some new adult actors that will be trained for the job. The original crew could be the captains or more of mentors? They are too old and kids are too young go in the middle. Even Tom Cruise trained the new pilots. Anyway you can have both the nostalgia but with new stories. IF there was such thing as Ghostbusters, kids would not be qualified because they are kids.

This video is a month old, but I finally watched it as I was curious about your thoughts since I finally saw Frozen Empire last night (and to connect with the nostalgia aspect of the film, I watched it at an old drive-in movie theater). I would agree that Frozen Empire is "fine." That said, I had a hard time getting into it and found the first half incredibly boring. Perhaps that's because leading up to it I went back and watched the other films (including the 2016 reboot) over the past week so maybe I was just a bit burned out on the franchise going into this; but at the same time, I just felt there were a lot of flaws with the movie. I felt like perhaps Afterlife at least had a reason to exist (to tell the story of what became of the Ghostbusters) although I sort of disliked the depressing notion of it -- that they split up and Egon went on to a solitary existence in the middle of nowhere. Frozen Empire seemed like it wanted to build upon the origin of the "new" Ghostbusters team (Egon's family) and put them back in NYC. But the story didn't really build much on the events of Afterlife -- we get new characters (such as Nadeem, who I didn't care for); no real development between previously existing characters (what happened to the love interest between Lucky and Trevor or the friendship between Phoebe and Podcast? Instead we focus on some odd connection between Phoebe and a ghost girl.); very little humor (that seemed to mostly be relegated to silliness from the mini marshmallow men); and something of an undercutting of the previously established aspects of the Ghostbusters universe (Ray and Egon were scientists and the team used their scientific knowledge to create gadgets to fight, capture and contain ghosts and demons such as Gozer, yet that didn't work on Garraka and instead they needed a guy with special flame powers?). Of the five movies, it easily ranks last for me, but perhaps again, I was simply disengaged with the franchise by the time I watched this fifth one in a short period of time. That said, I could easily go and watch the original one now and still be entertained.

I wonder why none of these ancient "gods" that come back from ancient times ever notice or care about the technology that we have. Like, I get that they're "gods"... but any ancient person would see our level of technology today and probably think we were gods. Some civilizations did do that. These supposed "gods", even being "gods" would be entirely ignorant of our technology and all the things that are possible in the world today... and they would probably be amazed by that... or at least very surprised.

I've made a reservation and cancelled it a couple of times for this movie. Your review was a little more positive than what I've previously heard and seen. As a fan of the first movie, I wan to see another Ghostbusters movie I would really like. On the other hand, I remember when Jason Reitman was making substantial, original films like JUNO, UP IN THE AIR, and YOUNG ADULT.

I think 'Frozen Empire' was heavily edited on post production (because the trailers show a lot of content that aren't in the actual theatrical version). So I wonder if they'll release the deleted scenes or in an extended cut for Blu-Ray & DVD.

Loved afterlife and I found frozen empire to be okay. Got a couple of laughs out of me but some jokes didn’t land. What I loved was seeing Ray team up with just Phoebe and podcast. That’s what the film needed more of. I think it’s time to just retire the original cast except for Ray. He should be the experienced mentor and leader. Have Winston show up briefly. It’s fine for him to just be funding the ghostbusters. Bill Murray and Annie Potts had absolutely no reason to be there. The villain unfortunately just ended up not getting that much to do. I think we need to do away with the whole villain being a God/entity. We need a proper ghost as the villain like Viggo. The best new idea for this film was the possessor ghost. That was a proper threat and when he fought Trevor that was a proper how are we getting out of this situation. Biggest gripe is the third act being rushed and anticlimactic and being somewhat of a repeat of afterlife’s showdown with gozer. It seems editing and reshoots heavily affected it. Overall just an okay movie. I had fun. I think the next film will probably be better.

Agree with the review. There were enough things in the movie that I can say I did enjoy it mostly But just too many things that didn't work that brought it down. Too many characters in it for me. Movie had no time to breathe and was just doing all the same stuff over again. I didn't buy all the new Ghostbusters either. Paul Rudd was a great summer school teacher, but I don't get him as the lead Ghostbuster.. and the Mom doesn't really seem to want to be there. Just alot that doesn't make sense to me. Could have been much better.

What is your attitude towards franchises in general? In your video "Super-Served With Mediocrity: How To Stop Hollywood's Reboot, Remake, and Recycling Trends" you said that we should vote with our wallets and that where the only way we would see a change in the type of movies we see in theaters. For me Ghostbusters 1984 is 1 movie, you couldn't pay me to see Frozen Empire in theaters, my time is limited on this earth. These Studios have lost the benefit of the doubt, it's their job to entice me through the door to watch.

Took the family to see it last week and they love it. My two girls came out wanting more and my wife wants to see it again. The movie has great special effects, liked the fact that we can see more of the old cast on this movie. Lots of fan service with locations and characters from the very first movie. I think I preferred Afterlife in terms of story but maybe because of the subject, which was the past of Egon Spengler, but I think Frozen Empire is fun, very enjoyable and feels very Ghost busters!

Last post I'll make here (besides replies): I think Ghostbusters II should've seen Dana become a Ghostbuster. It'd have made perfect sense for her to want to study ghosts/the paranormal and pick up a proton pack. I think doing so could've led to a stronger, more substantial sequel. Then, if Bill Murray or any certain ones had been dead set on leaving, they could've introduced another character or two (e.g. John Candy, Eddie Murphy, Chevy Chase, etc) and teased them for a third film. But they didn't. Now, it's just a lifeless money vehicle like most everything else, like The Exorcist Believer, The First Omen, the next Alien, and so many others. I'm relieved that most new things coming out at the theater don't interest me much because I've been able to discover so many good/great films from different eras, countries, and genres that I'd have probably mostly missed. I'm looking much more forward to getting in my recent Kino, Vin Syn, and Arrow orders than I am any new film coming out soon.

It's a hard pass for me. The first two are all I need. The last one was terrible. They retconned Egon into a deadbeat dad, all the kids are weird avatars of the original GBs, they immediately learn how to use everything, and scrawny kids can lug around established as HEAVY proton packs like nothing. I'm also not particularly crazy about them using Harold Ramis's CG corpse or whatever to make buckets of money off of his creation, especially since they bastardized it and made his character a deadbeat dad. Very tacky. It's a shame to me that Bill Murray or the others have anything to do with it. I get that I'm not the target audience though. It's made for the lowest common denominator consumers who don't really appreciate the first movie.

Because developing new movies requires risk and money, two things in short supply. Every studio is looking for billion dollar franchise ideas--in a recent WB meeting, Zaslav bemoaned that they weren't leveraging billion dollar IPs like they should--but they don't want to risk creating something new because it costs a lot of money to brainstorm new ideas that often go nowhere. So they mine Hollywood's past successes in hopes that the magic that was once there still survives, at least in some small part. The movies have always been a business, but with budgets being in the hundreds of millions now, every studio wants maximum reward for the smallest risk. That means trying to replicate everything that ever made money.

I never saw GB 2016 or Afterlife and I probably won't see Frozen Empire. I'm so burned out on these empty franchise extensions - "reheated leftovers" as Heath puts it - that I'm just not interested. If some younger viewers watch them and get interested in these franchises, that's great, but they're primarily making these sequels to sell stuff to us 70s/80s/early 90s kids for as long as we live.

Last I heard, they were planning on a new animated series of some sort, but I'm not sure what the premise is... They should really just reboot The Real Ghostbusters while they still have the original voice actors. Many if not most fans just want the original characters (Peter, Ray, Egon, and Winston), not some lame substitutes and teenagers larping as the real deal, with creatively bankrupt callbacks to the original film.
@ghostbusterscollector8593

As a fan it pains me to say this but I have to be honest - Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is a bad movie. The film is total a mess. It's boring, poorly paced, confusing, convoluted and overly complicated. There are far too many characters, some of which have been needlessly shoehorned into the story. It's overstuffed with unnecessary dialogue, dull subplots, pointless characters and scenes which go on for far too long. It's not funny either. I didn't laugh once during the movie, and neither did the audience I was watching it with. Neither is it frightening. Laughs and scares are the two things you expect from a Ghostbusters film but this film is completely devoid of any. Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan may be talented directors, but they're the wrong people to be writing Ghostbusters films. Afterlife was mediocre at best, but Frozen Empire is just plain bad. With a heavy heart, I rate this film 3 out of 10. I feel a lot of fans are in denial about just how bad this film is.
@johnm.withersiv4352
@johnm.withersiv4352 Месяц назад
I liked the 2016 reboot more than Afterlife. I still think the marketing killed 2016 because audiences couldn't tell if it was a sequel or reboot and went in with skewed expectations. I agree the first was the best, the cartoon was great, and the rest of the franchise has been echoes. Kids used to play with toys of adults and not need kid characters to play along.
@CerealAtMidnight
@CerealAtMidnight Месяц назад
You hit on something I think bears highlighting: kids don't need kid characters to relate to a movie. They're fine relating to adults. Indiana Jones didn't need Short Round to capture kid's imaginations, and The Ghostbusters don't need children to appeal to younger audiences.

@@CerealAtMidnight I loved Shortround, but he doesn't need to be the main character (until he grows up). GI Joe, He-Man, Ghost Busters, Robocop, and most of the properties were selling kids toys based on adults. Glad you found that worthwhile as a distinction in our nostalgia. I like Chuck Klosterman, writing on nostalgia, says they're selling us back to us.
@CerealAtMidnight
@CerealAtMidnight Месяц назад
Klosterman is right, and it's something I've been saying too. The studios have found a way to trick audiences into going to see the same movies, but with a fresh coat of paint. Star Wars, Star Trek, and even these new Ghostbusters movies are really just the plot points we already know from years ago. They're selling us tickets to movies we've already seen.
