I still remember the day Only Built 4 Cuban Linx dropped. I was a teenager growing up in East New York, Brooklyn, the belly of the beast. A friend had bought the CD and came into the park blasting it. We stopped the basketball game and listed to the album the rest of the day on repeat. And when Ironman dropped, I was there that day and still have Wu on a separate playlist for the car and gym. The 90s was such a good time in hip-hop, also tragic too, but a decade I'll never forget. Blessing to these brothers who are aging well and can look back on what they accomplished.

I'm just a white kid from the PNW - grew up in a logging and farming community - and I will NEVER forget the first time I listened to Cuban Linx when it came out. Been a Wu fanatic since. Hip hop is the prevailing art form of the masses over the last few decades and it doesn’t appear to be going anywhere. When historians look back on this period, emcees might be viewed the same way we look at novelists from two hundred years ago or playwrights from the 14th century. If that’s the case, and it might be, these guys will be among the absolute best. In my opinion, they’re the absolute peak of the art form. It’s hard to imagine how they were even able to create something so different from the rest. Thirty years later and it still holds up the same way it did when I was a kid.

Yup. And they are super versatile writers. 36 chambers had the grimy battle raps and storytelling, Cuban Linx had the mafioso criminology raps, Ironman was still on the crime tip but it is more like a fly 70s blaxpoitation film than a serious mafia flick and is packed with funny out there metaphors, and then on forever they went completely abstract and had more concious raps. And that was just their first 4 years in the game 👑

Saw these guys at a show about 5 years ago in Orlando. I had just came back from Chicago after my Grandmothers funeral. After the show they were on the way to the after party, Ghost and Rae both stopped and dapped me up. Shit was therapeutic!
