So here is a fun little trick you can try out. There is a stage Select code. On the title screen Hold right and press B 3 times. Then press up and press b 3 times. Tap left and press B 3 times then tap down and press B 3 times. Then hit start 1 player game. There it will give the life counter and the stage select. Press A or B to go up or down. With this code you could beat the game in under 5 minutes. Have fun!
There are so many comments about the game but I can't stop laughing at the unenthusiastic narration! This is one of the funniest reviews I have ever seen.
Well Done, Aqua!!!! Your reviews continue to rock!!! As I have been a fan of yours for quite some time now, here are my Top 5 favorite Reviews/walkthroughs of yours: 5. Custer's Revenge (gotta respect the Mystique Review) 4. Super Mario Brothers 2 - Famicom Version 3. Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty - PS2 2. Dragon Warrior - NES (your first review I ever watched) 1. Dragon's Lair - NES
I will never look at chicken parmesan the same way again. On a serious note, you are a badass for completing this game. I never got past the 3rd level.
I wish you came out with videos wayyyyy more often, you're probably the best video game reviewer on here (IMO) and, in fact, one of the best youtube channels period (again, IMO). Only thing that sucks is waiting months for a new one. Is there any chance that if someone made it worth your while (like me, for example), it would inspire you to, perhaps, make a few more often and regularly? I realize they might take a long time to do, each one, but I would gladly reimburse you for time and work. Do you have a paypal? I wouldn't mind making REGULAR payments for you if it means getting a new vid, say, maybe once a week or every other week. I'd definitely make it worth your while. I do this with a few other channels, on here. For those channels I believe to be among the best RU-vid has, I don't mind often spending my riches on them in terms of a regular sort of funding. All I ever ask in return is for the person to keep making great videos just like they've been doing, but just at a slightly more frequent pace (although sometimes I will PM review requests that they are free to take or not take)
a rare case where bugs in code make a nes game many time harder than arcade version... they gooched the weapon damage values!! not the first time in a nes game just look at final fantasy great game too but "special" and "critical" is gooched too in weapons
I played the last level for hours yesterday, and I just couldn't do it. My biggest problems were that sometimes a skeleton would randomly awaken on the floor above when I'm trying to lure the red demon down and distract me, or when the demon would randomly awaken on the floor above when I'd actually get past the demon before. This game is just brutal, maybe harder than Battletoads.
I always wondered what was up with Sir Arthur being with the princess in his underwear in a graveyard, of all places. "Sir Arthur, why hast thou brought us to yon graveyard where the dead sleep? T'is very dark, and the living are not nearest. Art thou doing this to prove to us your courage?" "No, because it's great place to make out with a date."
Great review/walkthrough as always, Aqualung. I just wanted to point something out, by the way: that pinwheel icon that you were talking about is called a Yashichi. It appears in a lot of Capcom's arcade games of the late '80s and early '90s, and it usually awards the player(s) with life power-ups. In the near future, I hope you're able to do a review on this game's two sequels, Ghouls 'N Ghosts (either the original arcade version or the Genesis port made by Sega of all people) and Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts (either the original arcade version or the Super NES port).
The Arthur in the game must be a different Arthur. Cause I don't remember him fucking Lady Guinevere (she's referred to as such with her alias Prin Prin) in a cemetery then fighting two satans in his underwear as being part of the original Arthurian Legend.
Hey Aqualung, out of all the really difficult NES games you have done do far (I.e. Silver Surfer, Ghosts & Goblins, Dragon's Lair, etc) which one did you find to be the most challenging to get through for the walkthrough?
Yes it is hard and all but it was intended to be an arcade game. They wanted it to swallow your money :P The points were not useless either as in the arcade you could set a score onto the machine I assume? Perhaps not changed well enough as a port is all. I own this cart and no matter how many times I play it and beat it, from time to time it can destroy you.
10:16 Wow, what happened there? GBC version have better translation, and little different music (By Allister Brimble, awesome composer for lots of games for Amiga) but other than that, it is same as NES version
metalcoola The guy responsible for the awesome soundtrack to Driver 1 and 2 on the original PlayStation worked on the Game Boy Color version of Ghosts 'N Goblins!? You learn something new everyday.
when i got a nes as a kid, i got the mario/duck hunt, of course, zelda, and ghosts and goblins. I beat mario, played zelda forever, but this game.......i remember playing it, but never cared to beat it. My next game was TMNT 1 and i got so good at the game i could beat it in about an hour, but this game.....just never had any appeal to me
If there doesn't exist a band called Devisut yet, I should start one and name it that purely to reference the horrible translations in Ghosts 'n' Goblins :3
I went to go visit my uncle a few weeks back and he had this game and an orange zapper i asked him if i could have it since he doesnt even have an NES nor a controller. And he said no. i really wanted this game it even had the cover sleeve and the cartridge looked brand spankin new like it was never touched at all.Seriously wtf man he even had the fucking zapper and i had duck hunt mario cartridge.
Awesome review Aqua. Note that if you want to speedrun this game, it's a good idea to become very good with the torch. There's a way to use a bird to damage boost your way over a wall in Stage 2, which you can see in the top right at 7:26
Yep, has all of the check marks that would make it a game I would likely "Game Genie" through all the way not just back then, but also today. And Chicken-Parm Ghosts! Will never see them the same way again! :)
