The fact it’s called ghost wire Tokyo makes it sound like they may have future ghost wires based in different locations with different folklore. Tbh I would love that
The Kuchisake onna is always a myth that I feel truly demonstrates Japanese culture. Because while to avoid death you can say she is average, there apparently is another way to avoid death. When she asks you whether or not she is pretty, you can claim that you’re running late and in true Japanese fashion, she will apologize for inconveniencing you and let you go on your way without additional interruption.
Reading game stories is such a bore from wiki sites, that's why I always come to your vids. Love the way you unpack the plot and its elements. Keep it up :DD
@@Chance57 And some of us can’t afford to buy these games. Wiki writers are one of the main sources to get to know the plot of these games that we aren’t able to play.
"Not scary in the least" *proceeds to showcase nightmare inducing boss fights* 😅 Great video as always. It was your lore videos on Tango Gamework's Evil Within that led me to your channel to begin with. Thank you for providing a way to experience stories that I usually wouldn't have the nerve to experience firsthand (maybe some day). Keep up the great work. 👍
my only disappointment was never knowing who Hannya is, I don't like leaving something like that without knowing what it is... hope, it gets sequel or prequel, explore more about previous groups that following Hannya's step, or more interesting plot in sequel exploring deep underworld or heaven some sorta
I know this won't help much, but there is a visual novel prequel that helps you get to know KK's original team a bit more. It's called Ghostwire: Tokyo - Prelude. Beyond that, Idk, I feel like we got to know Hannya pretty clearly by the end, but I would like to see more of a exploration of the way this game presented supernatural japan.
I think that Tango was trying to keep Hannya's true identity a secret and mystery and that they wanted to player to imagine who he really is and what he was really like.
KK and Akito’s symbiosis reminds me of Talion and Celebrimbor’s. A wraith/ghost banished from death help/ a dying man to complete his goals by any means even if it means just using the man as a vessel.
Some things people might not realize is that these arent strictly based on the original yokai or urban legend but rather modernized and subjective take on the yokais and actually pairing them up with other yokais. For example kuchisake onna isnt strictly kuchisake onna but rather she’s mixed with hachishakusama, or the 8 ft tall woman i say this because she wears a sun hat and is abnormally or unnaturally taller than the average height. Another one is the faceless one with the noh theater mask, her boss form is clearly a bakeneko but its also mixed with the jinmenken, a popular urban legend of a human head and a dog body, which can be clearly seen in her boss form design except its a human face on a cat body. The rain people are technically inspired by nopera-Bo whcih are faceless people, but in this case the rain people are actually more likely inspired from ohhaguro bettari, a variant of the nopera-Bo who instead has only a mouth but wears a shiromuku, which technically could also be the main inspiration for the shiromuku ghost. A lot of the enemies in the game are based off and somewhat stay true to the original folklore however most of these are actually more modernized takes or mashups of multiple or different yokais.
Wooo keep it up Harry with these amazing lore & order videos. I can’t help but always watch these videos even if I don’t plan on playing the games because of your amazing production value.
Here is a few things I noticed. The boss monsters are other known youki. The first look like the red oni from the story red oni/ blue oni. The cat youki I think is from a creature that become one when a cat becomes a hundred years old or the creature that could bring good luck/ bad luck due to their nature? The third is based on the spider lady youki. The last escape me but this might help you understand the faceless bosses more. It might even connect to the other characters that bodies were used even more. Otherwise thank you Harry for a deep lore dive as usual
@Hey itz Ari I think that boss is a nekomata and not a bakeneko. Bakeneko are cat spirits that are more mischievous than malevolent. They wear clothes, dance, make corpses into puppets for pranks, and set stuff on fire accidentally. Some of the more evil ones will kill their owners and pretend to be them, but besides that they look like normal cats standing on their hind legs. Nekomata though, are always evil, and particulaly like to kill or enslave people. They are the ones with the famous split tail, which this boss has. Plus I think bakeneko are created from really old cats, while nekomata come from the vengeful spirits of dead ones which also makes sense for this boss. And Widowspiderjuice that spirit your thinking of is a Maneki Neko, which are the lucky cat statues and their always helpful Also sorry too for the paragraphs lol
From what I’ve seen and played of this awesome game, it’s basically like it’s own version of jujutsu kaisen and is somewhat of a reference to the outstanding Shibuya incident arc since most of the story takes place in Shibuya
Just played this game yesterday. I was impatient, leading to skipping parts and I ended up not understanding anything 😅 Now it makes much more sense !!!
@@DeadMansSwxtch I agree . It's extremely repetitive. This game is for those who are really into Japanese myths and folklore . Gameplay wise, there's nothing new . Just wave your hands , cleanse the gates , absorb spirits . That's about it
Actually just beat this late last night. Really good game, it’s scarier than a lot of people give it credit for. Ofcourse it’s not on the level of Fatal Frame or Silent hill ect. but it can get pretty spooky. The side missions were real fun, really made me feel like a spirit detective 😎 this and The Evil Within are masterpieces. It sucks that Shinji Mikami is retiring soon..
Immediately after discussing Erika and her tendency to take care of cats, you describe the relationship between Erica and Rinko to be "catastrophic". Please satisfy my curiosity and let me know this was on purrpose?
Thankyou for making this video, the story of this game is actually pretty basic and has been told several times on anime or novel. But the way they presenting it, very vague and scattered making it feels unnecessary more complex than it supposed to be.
Thanks for all the great content man. Seriously could watch hours and not get bored! Also really like the fact you show off alot of indie games that deserve more recognition. I respect that alot.
Love your videos and love you! Thank you so much for this. I’m so interested in the stories of these games, but i don’t have the time nor the equipment to watch them or play them myself. Bless you!
Another great lore video summary. But I couldn't help but put this silly insert. Kuchisake: Am I pretty? Quagmire: Can't tell. Maybe if you take off that mask I can give you an honest opinion. Kuchisake(after removing the mask): How about now? Am I pretty? Quagmire: Giggidy. Oni: Who else but Quagmire.
I think an infamous style of gameplay, with bosses that are more than "remove core X amount of times" would have done alot to make this game stand out far more than it did. But to do that first you'll have to cleanse some Tori gates.
Hmmm....I am not sure that they're halluciating those times where the environment has changed. I think it's a lot more closer to being spirited away or like JJK getting into sucked to a domain, or can be experiencing the vengeful spirit's strong poltergize abilities. Just like the time in the school near the national forrest of the game. Where you find out that a girl had committed suicide or was found missing for days and the teacher was getting extremely worried. After the Vanishing happens, the spirit still retaining most of her negative emotions turning her into a visitor herself. It was one of the most horror part of the game but while not too frightening, you could get jumpscare from those photo side quest, since if you're no using a guide, you can use the photo itself as a radar of some sorts. Where the back of the photo darkens as you get closer to the location based on the photos, and based on what I seen, if you get a certain point where you're close to the location of the photo, if you check the back side of the photo, there will be a eye or sometimes a blurry face. And there there will be a jump scare of a woman or hands suddenly trying to grab you, it was very shocking when I was traversing the map looking for those locations based on photos. Which was a bitch looking, but after getting 13 or 15 out of 25 photos, I looked for guides on those photos😂
There's alot of yokai legends you can find in this game for those who are curious. Hanako is in the game, kappas, and other yokai. You can also pet Shiba in this game so it's great.
I would listen to you even if you were covering snakes and ladders or hopscotch lol...the lore the gameplay and the enemies are just soooo interesting..I love the hand movements based on Kuji-kiri...always great content from you sir...
I thought the game was gonna be like a judgement sort of gameplay so I was so confused when my friend showed me him playing and he started finger gunning everyone, but I don't care to play it so I'll just enjoy your video
Thanks for the video as always. I just completed this game last night and since there are dozens of text logs and voice recordings it was hard to keep track of just what was going on. The gameplay was meh but I loved wandering around Tokyo and collecting spirits. I literally had to force myself to stop playing as it was 2am lol
This game towed the line between spooky and scary but they definitely made a concerted effort to not have it be scary. The devs said they didn't want to be known only for scary games but I cant help but feel some more horror would of made the experience a bit better. I did enjoy this game alot tho, it was like a spooky banjo Kazooie with finger guns and the perfect shield mechanic from smash 4 lol
I really enjoyed Ghostwire but I'm afraid it won't get a sequel or anything. It was visually impressive and narratively refreshing, though the gameplay was a little repetitive for such huge, intricate map. The expansion bit when you have to cleanse the school was unique though.
I'm playing this game on the series s ATM. Whilst not the best game 🎮 ever. I'm actually enjoying it. I like the combat. Story is a bit all over the place. That's why I came to this channel. He explains it well. But yh it is definitely not rubbish. I'd say a 7/½ out of 10 for me. I'm loving X box game pass ATM. I would have preferred evil within 3. But I like this game. Bit tedious some of the side missions. But quite a good game 🎮👍👍
The story seems ok but this is the first game in a while that has such repetitive combat and quests even worse than ubisoft that it made me question what was I even doing with my time. I generally finish all the games at least once after investing my money but this one I just gave up.
How did he survive when in the VERY VERY beginning the ghost thingy said it "Can't use a live one." So wasn't he dead? As well didn't those Black Flames around his face and leg signify grave injuries he sustained? That was the only real confusing parts like when the other being left him and he was just okay all of a sudden like dude was in a SERIOUS accident earlier and was dead.
Alright I need advice should I watch this video and leave it at that or should I buy the game and play it. Can someone please help me decide. It looks so good but I don't want to spend money but then again it might just be worth it
I loved this game and was hoping for a sequel, shame Microsoft shut down Tango Studios. IIRC Bethesda holds the IP for this but a sequel us now unlikely
Bloody hell, working late are we Harry :) Saying that, I’ve got work in the morning and should be asleep. Still, seeing as it’s you, maybe just one more video, I know it’ll be good! Edit: I was right, well worth it. Also I love the hesitation in, ‘another fight, with a huge…. Spider’ lol!
OK just a little bit of context I have never played this game ever and for some reason I had a dream that I was trapped in a world just like this in Japan and there were mountains next to big skyscrapers and the city was buzzling full of different cultures not just Japanese And I was an older man for some reason Then my cousin Showed up and still was a young man. He told me that I was not even supposed to be alive. Then he told me the story of how I Died Apparently at the age of 30 I died of my illness which is kidney disease So he tells me he doesn't understand why I am still walking around the city And then he stopsLooks up in the sky Then I look up and see nothing put a white light And then I wake up I'm telling you guys this was a crazy dream it felt so real It's a thing I do actually every crazy dream I have I always write it down before I forget the 1st thing in the morning Who knows it could be something but I have had a lot of dreams of me being in a completely different world and a completely different atmosphere It's crazy
New sub here... Came across your ch looking at you talk about the game (until dawn) I ended up liking this game, it was different and actually turned out pretty good.. Definitely had some slow spots, but overall not to bad.. Keep up the good content on your channel
