I know Jonas Kaufman has his detractors, but his voice is full and rich, perfect for this aria and for this role. I'm sure he has an impressive presence on the stage.

this is a German and translates his state of spirit different then an Italian.2nd/. he sings in italian not being his language therefore lack of specific waves but overall he transmits a powerfull emotion drive by a modern solid tone and sense of soul...he is a new patttern
I totally agree. Look at Placido Domingo, Giuseppe Giacomini, Jose Cura (he is an Argentinian, but he sing in Italian style of the opera). By the way, Jonas is the lirico spinto tenor, not clear spinto, so I have some difficulties to hear his Dick Johnson.

Tbh if you think this is bad, you are either deaf or an envious straight man who can't possibly fathom that a singer can be both talented and handsome.
His vocalism isn't Puccinian lyric although he tries to be lyric and I respect that. He's not really dramatic either. He's a solid "lyric" but listen to Corelli or Del Monacos high notes in comparison to Kauffman's and you'll hear the difference! A dramatic was a dramatic from head to toe! I will say the greatest thing about a lyric and even a few light lyrics is that as there voice develops and matures and ages they may be able to sing solid lyric if not lyric dramatic roles depending upon the maestro and the orchestration.
Giacomini's voice is great, but Kaufmann's has more subtleties... great crescendos, great moments of emphasis.... better acting through music in general

I am a TENOR for my self. And I think J KAUFMAN. Is the best TENOR of Those days. We should be blessed to have a great TENOR like J KAUFMAN. GOD BLESS him
Excellent actor but vocal technique is all wrong ! IThe voice records well but in the Opera House it sounds constricted and does not carry past the first couple of rolls . I've heard him several times at the Metropolitan Opera ,NYC and wanted to go backstage to offer my help vocally . I am afraid it's too late for him to change but I know there is more to his sound then we are hearing !!! Jonas ,give me a call ! `
