All this and you never even touched the antique lumber? Wtf dude? I am genuinely curious about it's history and it's future.

@@jtjjbannie these beams I believe were used to hold up a bridge and then they modernized the bridge. I didn’t get the full story either, Partially because it was raining when they brought them. Same guy is going to be coming back and helping me deal with them

For my projects, I use a lot of lumber around four feet long. So when I get a bowed log, I just cut it shorter before I mill it. That way I get more total board feet with a lot less waste. Shorter lumber, but still plenty of uses. I may have said this already in a past reply, but it is worth mentioning again. And when I do cut some long straight logs, I make sure to save that longer lumber and use the shorter pieces instead of cutting a long piece down. Great video. For some reason I could watch sawmill videos all day long, but seeing as to how I have my own mill, I'd better get my backside out there and start using it!

I have used RR ties for landscaping a long time ago. They are full of creosote and other things, have lots of blades and use a lot of lube. I expect there will be a lot of metal in them as well as toxic chemical residue. Yes wear a mask and protective clothing. Do not burn scraps or dust in your regular pit. This will contaminate the soil. Be very careful!!
@houndofgoshen5363
@houndofgoshen5363 Год назад
I’ve never milled any ties but have cut a bunch of them up for various landscaping projects. I always scan them with a metal detector. A Garrett carrot is great for this especially since it’s small enough to carry around in your pocket or on your belt. It’ll pick up metal up to a couple inches deep. As much as I hate them I’d definitely wear a mask. Great video!!! Thanks for sharing.

I personally wouldn't cut railroad ties on my mill Brock. Your going to go thru a bunch of blades and the creosote will coat your belts and destroy them as well. Not worth it to me but interested to see how it works out for you.

Brock... that creosote will destroy your mill. It will ruin the finish and coat everything in and around the mill. It will get on your belts, all inside the blade cabinet and on your blade guides, etc. not worth it IMO

Old RR ties are considered toxic waste here, you can't bury them or burn them. To get rid of them, you have to pay to take them to a toxic waste landfill. Not what you want to hear, I know.

Quite a load there, but man do those bolts make me nervous. I don't know if you have these kind of people out where you are but in Canada here there are environmental groups that go around and drive large spikes into trees which are about to be felled, the intent is to break the loggers saw and cause injury or death to dissuade the operator from continuing the job. Not sure if you were aware of this but I'm sure they have these types of crazies out your way too. Please be careful ! Thanks again for the Video!

I work 40 year for railroad. Those looked like 8 x 16 bridge timbers. They will burn you skin. It's like a sunburn only worst. It will dull sawblades fast. About 4 cuts with chain saw and its dull. Lots of luck on sawing them.

Best ro wear long sleeve shirt a face shield gloves. That stuff will ruin you clothes. If skin gets burnt use clear vinegar on burn. Pour on let dry. It will probably gum up saw bad. Where a good respirator when cutting bolts. I retired after 40 years in bridge department on csx railroad.

Please don't even consider milling those ties. If you have to use them on the bridge project use them with the dimensions they are now. Of course they can be cut to length with a chainsaw as needed. Just don't even try to mill them!!!! They are pure poison to you and your mill. (From a 74 year old man with experience with railroad ties and a sawmill.)

When you get done cutting those ties up, you’ll wanna throw that blade away because it will probably be so gummed up. You won’t be able to use it at stuff will be like glue and that blade.

You better us diesel fuel as a blade lube other wise water will gum up your saw blade and saw guides up. Creasoate is terrible to mill

If you cut that treated lumber, lubricate the piss out of everything to keep the crap coming off of it from sticking to everything. Or...be prepared to wash it all off with some gasoline.

If the flat spot is tight against the vertical log stops then it should be 90 degrees

Good luck. I hope your customer is paying for the blades. Your wood doesn’t seen to have to much creasote in them because normal railway ties can’t even be cut with a chainsaw and when you try sparks come from the wood. I have tried it with good old canadian railway ties and will never do it again. Looking forward to that video good luck and hoping things go well
