Don't forget to watch press themed Cyanide and happiness animation on end of the video! Big thanks to Explosm Entertainment for making that. I have been watching their animations and reading comics probably something like 10 years. Their card game is also really fun :D

Put ceramic ball bearing in liquid Nitrogen, then drop it into a pool of liquid metal of some kind. Should be nice thermal shock because I don't think there will be much of a Leidenfrost Effect unless the outer layer of the ceramic turns to gas?? Maybe make sure ball is extremely clean before you start so no oils there to turn to gas.

Freezing probably won't help. It makes metal's brittle because it impedes dislocation movement. Ceramics are already much harder to deform plastically. For the same reason, the rate at which you apply the load shouldn't make as much of a difference for the ceramic.

What the hell are those ceramic bearings used for? Spinning the molten core of the Earth?
@phoephoe795
@phoephoe795 5 лет назад
Typically used for heavy duty applications- look at the size of the ball and you can estimate the size of the components the bearing can fit. Also they see a lot of use in spacecraft- as you do not want the bearings to fail on your satellites. (regular steel bearing can be damaged by electrostatic discharge from solar flares- ceramic isn't conductive and therefore doesn't have this problem)

I freely admit that this analysis is only from watching the video. I do not know if this is connected to the failure of the Smashinator 5 000 000 to destroy the ceramic ball bearing, but the high speed footage of the small steel ball bearing has not one, but two explosions of small debris. The first and most obvious one is from between the two hardened steel faces that the ball bearing is crushed between, and the second comes from between the upper piece of tooling and where it is welded to the face of the Smashinator's piston. To verify that I saw what I thought I, I ran the video after changing the speed to 0.25 of the normal speed and paused at the 2:39 mark. This suggests that the upper welds were damaged, so if the two faces of the tooling were not parallel, the ceramic ball bearing would be shot out sideways, not smashed, by the Smashinator's stroke. A possible reason for the upper welds being damaged by the first stoke is that the face of the tool and the face of the piston were not fully butted together when the welds were made. I hope that this is helpful and I thank you for uploading the video.
@dustinbrueggemann1875
@dustinbrueggemann1875 5 лет назад
Some of the discharge at the top is from the 3d printed plastic stops he uses as a sort of replacement for a burst disk. The stops hold the tool up until the pressure shears them and they are then pulverized in the gap between the tool and the chamber walls.
@richardbell7678
@richardbell7678 5 лет назад
Anonymous Pseudonym; The puff of debris that I am talking is not coming from the gap between the piston and the cylinder walls, but from between the face of the piston and the upper cylinder of hardened tool steel. The reason that I have doubts about the debris coming from the plastic stops is that debris should have been visible in every Smashinator video, not just this one.
@Timestamp_Guy
@Timestamp_Guy 5 лет назад
nah, it doesn't matter. If you look at the bearing ball smash, the piston hits the ball full force, and actually BOUNCES BACK up (4:48, for about 2 frames, you can see the light above it) before coming back down again. There's no way to get any more force that.

If you can get a hold of high explosive like c4 that would be best. Also there is an idea distance the shape needs to be from the target for it to work correctly as it has a sort of focal point and max velocity. The slow mo guys did one not long ago on shape charges, the power of them dwarfs what your last one did and it used a fraction of the explosives your one used too. You should check it out. Dan seems to be an expert on high explosives.

if .338 doesn't get it, I doubt a .50 would. But I know some people with a 20mm.

It lacks about 50cm acceleration distance (2:30 vs 6:59), so no wonder it's not breaking. Eli rakenteen sallima kiihtyvyysmatka on pajon normaalia pienempi, joka vaikuttaa varmasti, mutta en tiedä sitten auttaisiko normaali asetelmakaan keraamisen suhteen.

Yes... but there is limit to how fast you can accelerate something using air pressure, not sure if reached here... cody did a video about it firing BB gun using helium.

"there is limit to how fast you can accelerate something using air pressure" / Exactly. 'Bullet' is also very heavy. That's why I commented. Would 50cm more distance be enough? I have no idea. "not sure if reached here" / I don't know what that means, lol.
