Giant Cuttlefish Attack SCUBA diver

Giant Cuttlefish (Sepia apama) attack on female dive buddy. Cuttlefish breed and lay their eggs around this time of year - and become very aggressive and "frisky". They are very intelligent and are attracted to "shiny" things such as this torch, and especially anything that is yellow in colour.
I motioned to her to switch the torch off, unfortunately she didn't understand and this footage is the result. This is the first time this diver had ever seen a cuttlefish. This cuttlefish followed us for another 20 minutes.

Cuttlefish only show signs of aggression during breeding season. The breeding season for cuttlefish is mid-March to late June, in the video it states it was taken in april so they confirms it is during breeding season. This is probably the cause of its aggression.

This video was taken in April - this is around the time they breed and lay eggs - they tend to get a bit agressive and frisky at this time. After they lay their eggs they do die. This one didn't die on this particular day - it harrassed us for the rest of the dive.

Encounter with one off northern Papua New Guinea led to my short story "Ten and ten", published in Analog magazine. Incidentally, based off my encounter (which lasted some 10-15 minutes), when a cuttlefish goes all white, it either means "Danger!" or "More stupid humans coming" (or possibly both). Spotting two newly arrived divers, a cuttlefish up near the top of the reef I was diving went all white and a second or so later, so did the one hovering a meter in front of me. Alien language.

That cuttlefish look like it was eager to ask the diver to play along but sulk after the diver fail to understand what cuttlefish actually trying to say

ok first of if you even read the description it said that it was the divers first time to ever see a a cuddlefish. so if you saw something like that just coming at you like that, of course your going to react. dont insult the diver or call him/her a coward just because he/she was trying to defend him/herself.

I don't know which is more interesting the cuttlefish or the fact that this is a 15yr old RU-vid video. ^^

What is the danger? Do they sting or bite? If he had chose to engage the river what would have happened? I've never been in the ocean so I have no idea about these things.

They can bite, they have a beak. Hard to say if it would have. I wouldn’t give it the chance.
