Bandwagoning is a recurring theme in the beauty industry, unfortunately. When one comes up with an innovative product you’ll see everyone else trying to get a piece of the pie. My earliest memory of this is when Clinique came out with the very first AHA skincare product, called Turnaround Cream. It was a true revolution for its time, and the result of years of innovative research by Clinique. It wasn’t too long afterwards that everyone else had an AHA moisturizer, too - once they saw that Clinique’s moisturizer was a hit with consumers.

I completely agree with everything you've mentioned in your video - thank you so much for cutting through the bs! When I was younger, I got my cosmetology license and honestly, even professional cosmetologists are fed the same misleading marketing from brands to sell to themselves and their clients. It was very disillusioning to me. Through experimenting on my own hair for decades, I've learned not to fear SLS, not to try to force/"train" myself to go a week without washing, that most repair/protecting products do nothing, and especially your point about the moisturizing shampoos is dead on for me. Appreciate your content and looking forward to your next video!

Hey Abbey. I agree with so much of what you are saying. You are a fountain of truth and myth busting in such and enjoyable way. I went through the whole "Silicones are bad" phase and I am so over that now. I agree that a lot of brands label a product in such a way to claim "Repair" or "Prevention". What a lot of these products actually do is make your hair look and feel good and that is not the same thing. Love you Abbey. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the video. Love the research you put into your videos. Love how you are addressing these issues. Have you tried any Verb Hair Care products? They are mid range line. I use both their clarifying shampoo as well as their Curl and Ghost lines. Definitely think people need to clarify on a regular basis. I find monthly works for me. There are so many things that affects your hair besides products such as pollution and hard water but people focus on silicones. I find that since I started using silicones again my hair has looked better. CGM was not for me. Have a great week.

Thank you so much for emphasizing the issue with so called "bond builders"... there are quite a few popular ones, that essentially just have some hydrolyzed proteins as well as other conditioning ingredients. Tbh, whe first "bond builder" I used was that type of product. I didn't question it back then because it made my hair feel nice and it looked healthier, but after actually damaging my hair with bleach & using Olaplex, I can tell the difference. These products mostly do what silicones have been doing in the past & are being demonised for: creating a protective coating.

Hey abbey! I love your videos and just used K18 yesterday and LOVED it. The lathering technique also changed my shampoo game. I was wondering how you feel about loosely clipping your hair when you have conditioner in? I know you use a microfiber towel but I don’t have an extra one for that. Am i damaging my hair if it’s in a clip?

Yeah the bond building claim is so sketch especially for drugstore products. The ingredients usually just look like regular conditioning ingredients. Your protein, your emollients, your cationic surfactants. That NYM bonding mask is actually a nice product though even if it doesn't "bond" anything. It's got great slip and makes my ends feel very smooth.

Hi, thank you for the great information! I need help with going gray/ growing my gray roots. I am in my 50s and I have long, fine, but very healthy hair. Despite having a lot of hair, hairdressers don't like to work with it due to the amount of effort required. For the last 20 years, I have been coloring my roots and for the past 3.5 years, I have been using demi-permanent colors to color my roots. Currently, my grays are too light to cover and my hair grows very fast. Therefore, I decided to try "Herringbone highlights". I have talked with a couple of hair studios, and they recommended that I use clarifying shampoo for three weeks. However, after using it twice once a week, my hands became extremely dry and I had to apply moisturizer every 15 minutes. I can't imagine the damage it could do to my hair. So far, my roots have grown 2.5 cm. These are my questions: 1. Is there a clarifying shampoo that can remove some of the demi-permanent colors from my hair without damaging it? 2. Do you have any other recommendations for me before the "Herringbone highlights" process? Thank you for your help!

Hi Abbey, LOVE your channel!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can you help me???? I have two 'asks' if that's ok? Firstly I am perimenopausal and recently my scalp has become excessively scaly and dry, I have tried TONS of products (clarifying shampoos/masks/exfoliators .. you name it!!!) but what I really want is something that will actively remove the scaly, dead skin from my scalp - I will tolerate having flakes/dandruff in my hair if it means that the scales are being removed - any help gratefully received. My second ask is a recommendation for a product that help retain curls - preferably something I could apply on damp hair before drying and curling - I have tried a few but nothing lasts. Thanks a mill from M in Ireland!!

Is using purple shampoo on blonde hair actually beneficial? Does it strip color or dry your hair out? Is there a better way to care for blonde hair?
@TaliaSC
@TaliaSC Год назад
If the purple is actual, deposited purple pigments, like the Clairol Shimmer Lights, then yes, it is beneficial. The pigment cancels out brassy tones. If the purple is just a light, lilac or lavender creamy color, then no, that is basically pointless. You want to look for deep, dark shades of violet, nothing creamy!!

@TaliaSC
@TaliaSC Год назад
The Redken ABC treatment is good for damaged hair to make split ends or other dry/damaged areas look nicer, but it isn’t a purple shampoo. It does have some protection against color fading, but it’s not necessarily going to brighten the blonde or decrease the brassy tones. It def does condition and assist with heat or other damage though.

that all natural / silicone free products don't work for you doesn't mean they're bad or a red flag! I used regular haircare with silicones and stuff like that all my life including high end ones like kerastase and moroccanoil, but when I moved abroad I decided to switch to natural and silicone free haircare and my hair never looked better: healthy, soft, bouncy, shiny, not a tangle on sight. fast forward to covid I had to go back to my country where those types of products are practically inaccessible, had to start using regular haircare again and my hair crashed completely. I developed a lot of oily dandruff which I had never had to that point, I went back to having tangly, frizzy hair but this time was extremely worse and due to that my hair became super dry and fragile, now everytime I run my hands through my hair snaps, not horizontally but vertically leading to a lot of thinning, my hair is half of what it used to be, thank god I always had such thick hair that you can't really notice the thinning because it is still thick. three years later I managed to get rid of the dandruff but I swear there's no way to make my hair feel better, no matter what conditioner, mask, serum I use it's still dry and brittle, only thing that offers me some relief is pure cooking coconut oil. not saying those other type of products are bad or dangerous because I really don't agree with that whole idea, but they're very clearly not for everybody, specially curly haired people, there's a reason why natural haircare has such a large cult following!

this sounds like a hard water problem
@MG-fb4yj
@MG-fb4yj Год назад
@@mushy470 unlikely because i actually struggled with hard water when i lived abroad (at the same time i was using natural haircare) it was so bad that water would come out of the tap so milky it was almost white and still my hair flourished. the place i live now it’s the same place i’ve always lived, and the water is just fine. i’m so sure because the place where my sister lives has awful water and when i stay at her place i can tell the difference immediately, it’s bad now but when i shower at hers it’s just.. Death, no salvation. her hair was literally destroyed from the hard water, bleaching and heat. she was spending hundreds of euro in high end haircare with regular ingredients but nothing worked, she switched to natural haircare under my advice and her hair is healing soo much, still damaged but so much better than what it used to even though she hasn’t changed the hard water, bleach and heat usage (she has slowed down a bit on this because she likes how natural products make her hair look so much that she doesn’t feel the need to straighten as often but she hasn’t stopped completely)

As someone with a dry scalp I hate super creamy shampoos. Part of it is because if you have a dry scalp you’re more likely to be an infrequent washer. At some point you need to help your scalp out and do some proper cleansing. Otherwise the dry scalp gets even worse.

Hi Abbey! Do you have a recommendation for your favorite shampoo that really cleanses oil and product well, while not stripping color? I was using the ouai detox but it seems to strip my color. Maybe purology?

Hey Abbey! Quick question for you - have you ever had a closer look into silicones and the way they are chemically build and work with your body? I´ve studied pharmacy a while ago (never really got to work in that field cause i quickly noticed i hated it lol) but one thing that always annoyed me is that so called "appeal to nature" effect, where brands try to get customers to buy their products with putting "natural" and "chemistry free" on their packages (even if it´s not true). To get to the point - as far as i remember chemistry classes and especially silicones that have a medical use and are as an active ingredient in medicin, those silicones won´t do anything with your body cause they´re too large (due to being a macro molecule) for being actually resorbed by your body. So i´ve always wondered if the same thing applied to the silicones in haircare and cosmetics and i suspect it does (don´t ask me why, i´m not quite sure and i would have to dive into chemistry to explain that claim), but i thought it might be an interesting topic for you to research and explain next time you´re mentioning anything like that, cause in my brain with my logic it destroyes a good chunk of "chemistry is so bad for your health" blabla :) Btw - love your hairstyle in this video!

Can you do a video on cheap drug store shampoos vs high end expensive shampoos, and like debunking the myth that you need to only by expensive hair care products to have good hair?? I’ve spent SO much money on hair care and just decided to stop bc it’s exhausting always keeping up with the trendy expensive brands. I just started using the herbal essences rose hips shampoo and conditioner and my hair smells and feels amazing.

What shampoo do you think women in our history used? They usually made their own soap with oils and animal fat. Hair care isn’t complicated. Use a shampoo and conditioner, and a leave in conditioner…oil. Sometimes to help detangle. You’d be surprised how much your hair will grow. Hair didn’t start getting bad until people started making shampoos with a bad pH, and then coming out with hair color and lightener. If you use simple shampoo and conditioner and leave your hair alone…then your hair will grow.

🙆🏻‍♀️You won’t believe this but the cheap drugstore shampoos and conditioners I used since I was little girl back in the 80’s still work for my family….Pantene, Suave, Head and Shoulders, Herbal Essences , Mane and Tale😢🛒🛍️👏🏼😂🙋🏻‍♀️ Sometimes I feel outdated but I know it works…My mom would put mayo and eggs 🥚 in my hair mask and wear shower cap for 25 minutes…Also , the rainwater once a month would give your hair a detox from the fluoride water ….When it rain we would put out mop buckets 🪣 and my mom and aunts would rinse and dunk their hair….It would be shiny and beautiful afterwards….My curly hair was very long past my butt….All the mothers would ask my mom her secret…Also, she would put many different oils on my scalp and I would cry because of the smell …

Hair growth isn’t really complicated, we just make it complicated because of what we do to our hair and bodies. You can use the most expensive shampoo and have poor hair growth if you are constantly bleaching/colouring, if you have a bad diet, if you haven’t learned how to manage your stress levels, not exercising to improve your circulation, or if you have something wrong with your immune system. Take care of your body, and your hair will grow. I used to have super thin hair that wouldn’t grow past a certain length. I cut it off because I was depressed and I was also going through an eating disorder. I got better and gained some weight, and when my hair grew back, it was thicker, shinier, and it grew to the middle of my back. Now it’s short again and growing thicker and shinier than it did the last time. I had to go from 100 pounds to 160…but I’m healthier now and my hair is too, and I use vO5 shampoo…Feed your bodies.

Shampoos are being formulated thinking of the natural hair community that hates sulfates. Redken recently reformulated the shampoo of their All Sof Mega range to remove sulfates. I loved this shampoo and this line. If the product doesn't have silicones chances are I won't buy it. Going no poo/natural products destroyed my hair. When I realized the source of that and stopped no poo I needed products without oils/butters... and it was almost impossible to find at the time. Redken Extreme was the only line with just chemicals in it that I could use. The problem with Bond Repair is that Olaplex laid out the chemical that is doing the job. You can believe it or not. Most of the others claim they can do bond repair, but that pesky ingredient list doesn't have any molecule that can do it.

some of the products you said were red flags are meant for POC hair and they don't work because they aren't made for you, but I really agree with everything else you say!
@Willowy13
@Willowy13 Год назад
There is no such thing as POC hair. One either has straight, kinky, curly or wave hair that can be dry, oily, normal or mixed. I am POC and when I was following the no poo, it destroyed my hair and scalp to the point I was diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia. A series of coincidences helped me realize it was the no poo technique. I spent 4 years and some coin to treat my hair back to health. Back in the day, before the whole BS Deva created and influencers influenced for their pocket delight, products were made for dry, normal, oily and mixed hair. Since I stopped no poo, I went back to products for dry hair and my hair is happy again. Before no poo, I used products for oily hair for 38 years. Then, I spent 7 years as no poo. It may work for some, it didn't for me and I always tell my story so if something is going wrong with your hair you should investigate if it is the no/low poo causing problems and don't get to male baldness level (and changed texture, no shine, etc).

Abby- What clarifying / detox shampoos do you like? Hard water/well water The total dissolved solids (TDS) is our water stick to my hair and make it gummy and heavy. We don’t have an iron problem or chlorine issue. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME. I also need a few options of conditioners with silicone in them. I have natural curly hair which is on the drier side anyway but with the TDS at higher levels in the water nothing makes my hair soft. I need some slip. We do have a whole house water system plus two huge filters but the only thing to remove the TDS would be a whole house RO system and that’s like $10K-$20K…. I HATE it but we can’t move. I am in MN. Ugh please anyone help me. Thank you all so much.

I have natural wavy/curly hair and have hard water too. I use the ION clarifying shampoo and also get the ION crystal clarifying treatment ( its a little package that you mix up into a goo and apply to the hair) It's like a malibu treatment you can do at home. It's been helpful for me. I get it at Sally Beauty. I use the EVA NYC hair therapy mask after to condition my ends after using the shampoo.
