Thanks for joining in Y'all! I harvested a Giant Horse Conch while freediving and spearfishing in the Florida Keys with my good friend Carson Rutz. He convinced me it would be a good idea to do a catch/clean/cook video since it's such a unique find. This was my first ever attempt to be on camera and I almost didn't post this episode because of it. It also was the flint and sparked the fire to start a RU-vid Channel. The Bahamian Conch Salad Recipe (similar to ceviche) worked out great but the extraction of this Conch was quite an endeavor. I hope you enjoy laughing at my pain!
These horse conch would also make a great bycatch when spearing or when lobstering during lobster season.
Correction @ 31:50- the Horse Conch study was done by USF not UCF
DISCLAMER:
Make sure you check that it is a Horse Conch and not a Queen Conch before attempting to harvest any animal in the Florida Keys; and that it is legal to harvest them in your area.

So you ate it raw @OceanEthos ? I didnt see you cook it in the video. I might be worried about tiny parasites, which cooking I guess would take care of.
@OceanEthos
@OceanEthos 4 месяца назад
Cooking would take care of parasites. I “cooked” it in lime juice, the same way you would “cook” a civiche. The citric acid in the lime juice actually cooks the meat. I’m not sure if it has any effect on any potential parasites though

And here I thought the only thing 'horse' related in the water was a 'seahorse.' Guess I was wrong.

How did you get the guts out? Oh smaller shells you can boil the rest of the conch out.
@OceanEthos
@OceanEthos 5 месяцев назад
I reached my hand as far up as I could and pulled most of it out. There was still some in there so I put it outside by an ant pile and they did the rest of the work!
