Giant Trevally popping and stickbaiting tackle talk

Catching GT on poppers and stickbaits has to be one of the most challenging forms of fishing out there, especially off the rocks. The amount of preparation and thought that goes into tackle choices, knots, fighting techniques and location can be the difference between landing a GT or not even seeing one. Here I go back over what I've learnt since the last GT Preparation vid and give you a peek into what I'm using at the moment.

Hi Briggsy My name is Hakan.I'm from Turkey your chase and I'd love to go fishing with you, but that's not possible because I don't have that much money and airplane tickets and equipment, so I just want you to send me the equipment that I can catch over a pound of fish.

A progression of catching small to big fish is a good teacher of technique n understanding of what is needed in a big fish. Nothing beats that first hookup on that big quary that sheds all your fear n seeing to refine the fight along the fight.🙏😛 🎣 great job explaining love your videos from across the pond God bless be safe my friend 🙏

i live in hawaii, we call them ulua, any gt under 20lb we call them papio. Over here we usually use a dunking rig, huge 14ft poles with baitcasters with shark hooks with octopus/oama/and other small baitfish as bait, but watching mtf for a while i decided to take my 10ft spinner on the rocks with a sick popper, lost my popper to the reef in rough waters, rip 70$ popper.

Love these tackle-talk vids! I was wondering, in a couple of months I’m going in my first trip chasing GT off the rocks in Tonga. Since I life in Holland I have no one here to teach me haha, could you tell me something about the fight with a GT? Like what to do when you know the fish is going for structure to cut you off and how to adjust the drag during the fight. Keep m coming Briggsy!
@Briggsy
@Briggsy 6 лет назад
I set the drag to start with at I think about 12kg - 15kg and crank it up to around 20kg as soon as it hooks up. If they run even on that setting I tighten until the fish slows down and once i'm pumping them and it feels like they can't take any line I loosen off a bit. The exception to this is that one fish we saw sitting at the ledge, when I knew there was a chance to hook him I braced myself and tightened up to well over 20kg (could only just turn the spool a few clicks with your hand using all your strength), so because I knew I might hook him I could brace myself and I even had my rod already in the fighting belt when he hit the lure. That kinda thing is very rare though and usually I'm doing what I said first ^.
@chiefaltair
@chiefaltair 6 лет назад
Those are some crazy drag settings man haha! really makes you respect GT. You reckon a 5500h expo could do the job on medium sized GT in the 10-20 kg range, or would I really need an 8000h expo? since it will be the first time chasing GT I'm not really targeting tho 50kg+ haha. Thanks for the reply by the way, really appreciate the interaction with the fans from you guys!

Awesome vid as always! Can't wait for the next MTF vid!! Can you tell us more about the moon cycle? Bigger tides = better fishing?
@Briggsy
@Briggsy 6 лет назад
For me, it's always either the lead up to new or full with a preference to new. The big tides = big current which is the direct connection but, there's also something else happening that I don't really understand where right around the new or full the fish just go absolutely mental (not just GT). Had it a few times where they're just 'on' and other than the moon couldn't tell much of a difference to the previous days in terms of water temp, wind direction, time of day etc. it really seemed like they just lost it on the moon! So if you're planning a trip aim for the lead up to full or new and make sure you fish the peak and a day or two after, try both and see what you reckon but I like new a bit more.

Great update, mate. You've been on a steep learning curve, good to hear what you've learned. You explain it better than Brooksy, and no distractions with "hot chicks" walking past etc. Mate, is it possible to pre-order any of the signature lures on the morningtide shop site, for when the next batches arrive?
@Briggsy
@Briggsy 6 лет назад
Hi mate, stoked you dig the film! Pre order not really possible just because if we offered that they prolly all sell before we get them and then have to deal with stuff like we don't get the amount of lures we were expecting because lure builder is flat out and can only do a smaller batch so then people miss out who've already paid etc. But I can tell you there's a lot more to come this year and you'll have more options from different companies.

Hi Mate I do a 4 wrap uni Knot, most other fishos i've gone with do the same except Milan from BAF who does 6 wraps I'm pretty sure. I use pliers to pull the tag tight and tie it onto a swivel that's on a lure (not just the swivel) so i can hold the lure to pull against the mainline.

@Briggsy
@Briggsy 6 лет назад
85g lure + hooks still casts well for me on this rod and yeah a 170g lure + hooks is prolly the limit (200g-210g total weight I wouldn't want to go over).

It's fantastic that you use fishhooks without barbs. If you can fish and drill, you will catch enough fish even without barbs! We here in German-speaking countries have a great word for it: "Waidgerechtigkeit" (it is not translatable in English). That means fairness for the fish!
@Briggsy
@Briggsy 6 лет назад
Hi Mate, we do use a lot of barbless hooks but still use barbs at times as well. We definitely recommend people who are focused on C&R to use barbless but for us as a fishing show we have to make sure we actually get footage on a trip, so if we're losing a lot of fish you will see us start using barbs. Because of that I guess we're not the best example of C&R fishing but if we were going for a spin no cameras/pressure to get footage we're 100% barbless.

Hey Briggsy, good video. One question, what length leader do you go for?
@Briggsy
@Briggsy 6 лет назад
Hi mate, most the time it's only about 2m long because I don't cast the knot, I think that the FG banging on the guides over time damages it and you'll get more wind knots, also won't cast as far. The other boys cast their knot and have about 3m leaders, doesn't seem to bother them but I'm just weird. Prolly switch to the 3m leader the day I get reefed with the 2m haha.
