I love my country, this is New Zealand folks yes we are lucky, yes we are nice folks and fishing and scenery from coast to country is just beyond spectacular.

So what this guy is saying is that he rarely targets trout because of their size? I always thought catching a fish was just a bonus. I mean sure, a little trout may seem pretty lame to some people compared to like some big sharks or tuna, but that's part of sport, or hobby... whatever you want to call it. My favourite type of fishing is small creek fishing for trout and it just gives me a chance to experience the wilderness around me. Most people I know nowadays get frustrated if they don't catch something in the first five minutes. My one friend a couple months ago got frustrated and came and sat behind me and threw rocks at me and into the water while he was on his phone, and also wouldn't leave me alone because he wanted to leave. That made me think really hard, and notice that patience for some people just gets lost. There's nothing wrong with wanting to catch something, or landing a trophy, it's very exciting, it's just that people expect too much. Instead of my friend wanting to go down to river and test our luck, he wants to go fish the little undustrial pond that his Dad works at, for double-didget lb brook trout. By little, I mean the pond is about 20 feet wide and 10 feet long. It takes the joy and the challenge out of fishing in my opinion.

I have fished N. Z South and North island lakes and rivers. I am in Awe of the size of sea run Brook Brown Rainbows that run up the rivers. Catching anything less than 20 lbs is normal fishing in this country! I fished lake Colridge, Early morning, As the sun started to rise. I used a dry fly, I layed it on the surface lightly striped 2 times and the explosion happened 18 lb Brown. Magnificent fish. I was going to have it mounted. A fisherman comes by sees my fish calls it a pan fish. So I took it home and what a great dinner.

this is the one of the only things i miss about home, the sick trout fishing and weather!!

Im hearing you Matt. Went to NZ on a Snowboarding trip 10 years ago Stayed in Twizel, ended up fishing exactly where you are here. Was only 2 ol mates fishing out of a Caravan that was parked up beside the canal. Same rig as these fellas, fish were HUGE!

Amazing fish but you should consider getting yourself an unhooking mat for those big fish. It has been standard equipment for European carp anglers for the last 30 years.

All I kept thinking was "will you net the d@mn thing already?!!" LOL Huge trout tho'!

Tsaile lake has some of the biggest wild rainbow trout in the world. Humans don't feed them for their size. They naturally are that big. We've caught some our whole lives

To everyone saying these fish are easy to catch I bet 99% of people saying that wouldn't be able to catch a fish there within a day or even two. It is made to look easy on camera but in reality these are probably some of the toughest trout to catch as they have lures cast at them all day everyday so anglers have to use long light leaders to get at least a bite from one of these fish. Also, these trout are all wild but the salmon are farmed. The trout feed on the pellets fed to the salmon and this is why they grow so big.

It isn't only the excess food but the water is very clean and saturated with high levels of oxygen. It takes a combination of the right elements to have fish grow out so quickly.

Fly fishing for salmon and trout in the Niagara River is the best way in my opinion but also up in Canada and Alaska it’s trout and salmon heaven
