The boat looks like a surplus LCM-8 Landing Craft that someone modified by adding the raised superstructure and bridge. I served two tours in Vietnam in the U.S. Army's 1098 MB Company and commanded an LCM-8 that did coastal cargo transportation out of Danang. They could carry up to 50 tons but could barely do 10 knots when fully loaded.

That's just crazy that it's TOO heavy for the Ferry. Seen some big trucks on the ferry. Thought they could handle just about anything. Cool video!

The main problem of this condition they must adjust the location of crane CG on center of floatation at load draft to prevent heeling or trim ,because the the CG of crane could not confirmed and it depends on the experience of captain.

San Juan Island is served by super class ferries, and this crane was considered to be too big and heavy to transport via the ferry. www.wsdot.com/ferries/vesselwatch/vesseldetail.aspx?vessel_id=38

You don't realise how heavy the crane really is until the bow end of the landing craft sinks down into the water.

Yeah, the reason it's going on the landing craft is because it's too heavy for the state ferries, which are 460' long.

Joanne Cooper they are to heavy per axle. It's to much point load on the deck. That crane should weight just over 50 ton. The overall weight isn't that big of a deal. it's that European cranes aren't engineered for the low axle loading needed in north America.

Out here in Rosario Strait, a similar boat got caught up in big swells with a full concrete truck on deck. The boat rolled until the concrete truck rolled overboard. Fortunately, the boat ended up shiny side up, and the captain and truck driver made it back safe. The truck is still down there.

Hey, Docktor Jim!!! I was on the S J Enterprise a few months ago briefly as they were loading an old Prentice track-loader en-route to Lummi Is from Anac. Browsing through your list of vids, I'm kind of assuming you're a diver?? Live here in Burl and recently worked on building the new Nordland II that joined S J F&B as a sister to the Henry Island. Loading that Prentice was much lighter than this crane! Nice job on the vid! Ed

No, I'm a dock builder, and was looking at the brothers' marina there when the load took place. I own Northwest Docks. I always have to decide whether to use a landing craft, the ferry or an on-water tow. I usually do a mix of the three. I built Rosario Marina, and was able to take everything but the 80 foot gangway on the ferry with my own truck.

'Round these here parts, we call any crane that can take itself down the road a truck crane. Actually, if I type "truck crane" into a Google Image search, I see several thousand, um, truck cranes, like the one in the video. Maybe they call it a mobile crane where you live. There are regional differences.

It's too big to put on the state ferries, so they have to run it on a landing craft. I'm saying it's giant compared to the boat carrying it. Imagine what that's like when they get into rough seas.

Those blocks and the jib are likely on the next trip. This is either a 70 or 90 ton crane.

I thought it was pretty interesting. If you knew what that crane weighed and to load on a boat is pretty neat. I wanted to see what the boat did as far as level in the water.
