For people who moan at Ben and say that he should sell this stuff.... I am not sure about Oz but in the UK I know that companies don't buy second hand stuff from scrap dealers. They buy brand new as it includes a warranty, comes with technical support included and it can go through the business accounts. If a company bought second hand PCs, servers and UPS units, they could lose everything if there is a fault. It is frustrating when you find things that cost £10000 new and is only worth scrap value now, that is just how it is.
My husband is a computer systems engineer and he says exactly this when we watch Ben's videos, they are just not allowed to get these things second hand from scrappers, there is no guarantee on how they have been handled and there is literally millions or even billions of pounds worth of data storage at stake with data centre parts, just not worth it for the big companies who would be the ones who can afford tens of thousands of pounds in second hand parts. Sadly it is what it is now and that is scrap👍
The components of the ups can be sold to someone who dont mind , Building a ups unit diy, these batteries are good quality lead acid batteries. Not to compere with cheap car batteries.
Scraping the UPS in Your Driveway - I have seen it all now ! Real Value - Copper-Copper - Wires - Batteries - Alu - S/S and of Cause Sheet Steel etc,etc ! You could NOT Complain at all - well done ! There is Real Scrap Value here - I enjoyed the Video - have a Brake - have a Cold Drink and Relax - You have earned it Ben ! Cheers from QLD !!!!
Hi Ben, shame it had to be taken apart but with the batteries selling for around £20 new, the cable and switch assembly probably in the £200-£300 range and each of the individual choke of a similar type at around £50 second hand, you should be on to a nice earner, if you can sell them.
A guys gotta do what a guys gotta do. No shame from me man. When the scrap is beyond our physical capabilities we do what has to be done. Great video Ben
That scrap almost got one over on you 😂but as always you kicked it and won outstanding video great content thank you for sharing this with us six stars brother
A transformer has 2 coils, a choke has only one coil, it is used for managing the current flow or blocking AC while passing DC, for the scrapyard there is no difference between chokes and transformers.
What a fun scrap! If it'd be possible to easily sell this one on the company would've surely done that (probably tried for a couple of months to do just that). So don't sweat it. With your work all the materials rejoin the circle! Great job Ben! 😇
Don't beat yourself up for not saving it, that's enterprise grade stuff, A. No normal person is gonna want to deal with this, or even need it, B. No actual company with a need for one is going to buy second hand. Glad you didn't hurt yourself and good job getting it apart
Should've put the van in reverse chocked the ups cabinet and it would've sat it upright as you backed up. At least that's how I do heavy things off my van
Whoops the yellow bow is sitting on the top shelf. BEN YOU ARE DRIVING BE CRACY 17 MINUITES INTO VIDEO! WHAT IS IN THE BOX!!!!!!!!😲 It is the color of Dewalt tools. 😊
I share your pain, literally 🤣 I've been in this situation plenty of times before, so frustrating. Would have been nice if you could have resold it, but that's frequently easier said than done for a system like this. One of the nice things about the mighty Sharkmobile is it being a pickup truck. I can climb up in the bed and scrap the heavy stuff in place - something I've had to do too many times 😟
What a tough scrap! Lead acid batteries are ridiculously heavy. Those four cooling fans are made by EBM Papst, really high quality. I'd be interested in them if you want to sell them!
That would be amazing if you wanted to go solar and off grid. I get what you're saying though, when we work for ourselves, by ourselves, sometimes we just have to turn things around as quickly and as best we can and get on to the next thing. Headspace is key though, never underestimate the power of going for a brew and considering your options.
Hey! Since the start when I begin watchin you, which is about 7 years now I thought you should have had a truck with a back lift. Over in Sweden they still go as a regular car as long as they don't go over 3,5 metric tons. And the lift usually just take around 750 kilos so in this case maybe it wouldn't have been sufficient anyway. A truck like that is usually for 8 pallets so you couldn't have packed it full with electronic waste anyway because that would have been way too heavy. The reason I would have done that is because I've driven such a truck in my daily work får over 10 years. Another limit would be the weight limit for the whole truck which is from 700-1200 kgs. But in any way it would have saved your knees and back all those years. I certainly think you should keep it as a powerwall, but at the same time such batteries isn't that good for a powerwall. I think lithium-ion batteries a lot better for that. Like those in electric vehicles, also such that isn't anymore fit for electrical vehicles are very good suited for use in a powerwall since you don't need those tops of the power. But it would be a hassle to sort out which are good for keeping and not. It surprices me that the company that gave it to you didn't consider returning it or sell it them selves since the cost of these UPS units are quite high!
Ooooh Ben Ben Ben Ben 🤦♀ I quess that for 1/15 of the price of that unit, that girl with baby from video (time 2:02) would lift it alone for you😋 I believe that you should start to make few viedos about "what do I have for sale this week" first and then scrap the rest. Maybe if you put something stable under the bottom and just try to push it by the van. It might work well. Good luck Ben!
Such a nightmare!... it's a nightmare I wouldn't mind having every day of the week! 🤦♂ Could have paid for my flights from NZ to come and help move it and still made profit 😂
@@Andrew_Sparrow yes lol very true. Australia worked different. I get better prices on cables if I sell on ebay. its about 3-4£ a kilo. same as working pcs
You won't find a company who will buy a second hand rack UPS. No company is going to invest in this without the warranty and support that comes with it when new. A huge potential risk. Can deff resell the batteries tho
It's a rust preventer. It outgasses to prevent corrosion. 27:25 ''ZERUST® VCI rust inhibitors release a harmless, non-toxic, odorless, colorless vapor into the air around your metal item. As a result, protective molecules settle on all exposed metal surfaces, forming a very thin protective layer just a few molecules thick. This molecular layer inhibits electrochemical reactions on the surface of the metal that cause corrosion. ''
man I wish I would have some how found one brand new it would be nice to go with my system I have now. that thing would stay running for along time with what I have if I lose power. that's crazy they just get rid of it like that. that is like 15 grand worth of a battery back up.
We paid $15,000 USD for those exact eaton units. Would have definitely been smarter to figure out a way to keep that unit whole. Even used they go for around 8k with old batteries. Even if you would have had to hire help to move it it would have been a good payday. Now it's just scrap and the little bit you can get for the batteries which aint much.
Yes I did a quick check and the series is mid-range 15kVA so they go in the USA for $15000. The chassis alone is worth $2500 empty. I was almost crying. AS I reacll some of his monitor and PC buyers had large wharehouses. Maybe one could have helped unload and stored. They might have seen the value. Such is the life of a scraper. There will be some money from it.
It certainly wouldn't have cost them a lot to hire a carpenter to widen the doorway to get that in. I live next to a Kraft factory where they have to take entire sections of exterior wall out to get equipment in and out. Nice tear down. Those heat sinks were really cool!!!
you could have made a little power out power supplies for your garage lights fan etc we are still in a SHTF world remember a few solar panels and your away.
Oh man, dismantling it like this seems kind of barbaric to me as I'm usually the guy who fixes this kind of stuff. It is pretty satisfying though, I enjoy your videos!
Dear Ben you don't have a two willner to move that heavy item or wooden dollies with wheels on them t look roll it with, you're the only person that I know that doesn't take along a helper or have a trailler to make it a lot easier to make pickups, you get great money for your boards , once you had a driver helper on one of your videos while street scraping
Only from a licensed batteries seller. No company or user buyer is going to risk "Sold As Is" with that amount of money vs buying from manufacturer with warranties. This hasn't been fully operational tested to be anything other than equivalency to defective electronics (being sold from a scrapper).
