It’s actually the big short necked ones that where extinct because of competition from other late Cretaceous predators, And in some mysterious reason it’s the long necked plesiosaurs that somehow stayed to the end of the Mesozoic
@@persontheguyman223 but they had the most problems wenn they faced the new Apex predators like mosasaurs, global warming also plays a big role here to. After that the last of the pliosaurs have shrunk them selfs to more a dolphin size
Slight correction! Long-necked plesiosaurs like Elasmosaurus and Styxosaurus (the one you’re playing as!) actually survived well into the late Cretaceous! It was actually the short-necked pliosaurs that died out before them, although smaller plesiosaurs with similar bauplans-like Dolichorhynchops-did fare well towards the end of the Cretaceous.
Accutally the short necked plesiosaurs like kronosaurus went extinct before the long necked plesiosaurs. Their extinction helped the Mosasaurs out to becoming top predators. The long necked plesiosaurs went extinct during the asteroid impact 66 million years ago 🧐🥸
