The Rock of Gibraltar as a holiday destination 1950's
Thomas Cook Promotional A large rock in a very blue sea, Gibraltar, a light house sits on the near end. A large ship with a red keel and people lining its decks, a pilot boat beside it, the ship is traveling east or south, just beginning its journey. Another ship, sailing west, ending its journey. A large steam ship, black smoke pours from its stacks. A small boat, with two decks ( a ferry boat?) the Mary Claire, secured to a larger ship. Women emerge out of the larger ship's door and walk down a gangplank, one after the other.
A great stone wall protecting a small town from the sea, apartment buildings and smaller houses are visible on the slope going upwards. The Mary Claire pulls up to a dock, her decks filled with passengers. The passengers disembark down a gangway, the captain walks the deck, people mill about on the dock. A man holding a little girl by the hand, walks towards us then turns, a woman comes up beside them, the man then gestures away from us, the woman does as well, and the three of them walk that way. The family, with a young boy as well, passes in front of the Mary Claire.
The family stands with their backs to us, behind them a horse-pulled carriage passes, its stops, and the boy tries to get up with the driver, the young girl climbs into the carriage, helped by her parents, the mother grabs the boy before he can climb up and makes him get in the back, he sits beside his sister, then his parents climb in, the carriage begins to drive.
The carriage moves down a road in front of a white building with an arched colonnade porch. The boy sits in the carriage looking about him, behind him the road ahead shows a blue sea and more stone buildings. Palm trees stand behind a walkway on the wall by the sea. The mother looks out of the carriage interestedly. Pine trees frame a view of the blue Mediterranean and the title roofs of apartment buildings, then tree trunks. White walls hem in the road on each side, over the horse's head, an intersection of the road. The box carriage rounds a corner in front of a green porch decorated with flowers on a trestle. The small girl smiles, sitting with her back to the driver. From the driver's seat, the white horse walks down a street busy with pedestrians and shoppers and lined with cars. Carriages with horses hitched to them rest by the roadside, then a policeman, the typical English bobby, then men on the sidewalk. The carriage moves down a street, people on the sidewalk look at it as it passes, it stops in front of a store and the family gets out. The driver waits as the family descends from the carriage, they enter the store as the carriage drives off.
An Indian woman in a sari opens a box, the little girl leans over to see what is inside. A kimono from Kyoto swings from the ceiling in the breeze, beside it silk scarves sway. The mother approaches the husband with a decorated box, they laugh about it. The boy plays with a model plane.
