Gibraltar during the Spanish Civil War 

"Genius consists of knowing when to stop." If this is true, then Franco was a true genius. He got vital help from Germany and Italy, but did not tie his fate to those two benefactors. He transitioned from Fascist to head of a country integrated into Europe in the 1950-60 period, lots of money from tourists to Spain and also lots from Spaniards as guest workers in northern Europe, and then died in his sleep. Really, quite a neat trick.

Crazy how the whole of Spain will soon be dying of thirst due to the greed of the tourism $$$ and retired Europeans all that income has sucked the life ( which is water ) from the land. Spain unfortunately faces a bleak future as there is an environmental catastrophe happening with water or the lack of it especially in the countryside.

The British establishment wasn't afraid of a democratic Spain but of the prevail of sovietism in Spain and a probable uprising in Gibraltar by the anarchists and communists. After all the relations of U.K. with Franco after the end of Second World War weren't bad at all.

My family come from Gibraltar going back to the very first years of British rule in 1700s.I still have most of my family living there.

Good documentary, but one side of the coin only. Franco had a support from Nazi Germany and Italy, but republicans had support from the Soviet Union which was under Stalin then, in the time of Great Purge when around million people were killed only in the Soviet Union itself. Second - fascist in Spain were killing civilians, but so did republicans in so called Terror Rojo, 38 000 - 110 000 victims, according to different sources. And speaking about Gibraltar - Franco did not join Axis Powers and was the one who refused Hitler to attack Gibraltar during the II World War. That is a important consequence of the civil war in a matter of Gibraltar, which historicians should consider.

Perhaps having the most powerful Navy in the world in a garrison in the south of your poor country is not so bad. Spain could never have protected the "gateway to the Mediterranean" like Britain did and it probably kept Spain safe in a way it never could on its own.

What they have to do is return Gibraltar to Spain and take the Llanitos to the United Kingdom and stop living off drug trafficking in a territory that they stole by force of arms and it is a shame that it continues to exist in the 21st century.

Bad things happen during war. I've read some of the comments. Both side of Civil War were vicious. But ask yourself one question. What would have happen if the Nationalist had lost the war? The Nazi took over Poland in less than a day. What would have happen to Spain and Gibratar if Franco had lost the war? Remember ... the Nazi took France in less that 6 weeks. Certainly the Nazi flag would have flown over Spain and Gibraltar.

The civil war was horrible for Spain but actually, Gibraltar is currently worse. It is the cancer of the south of Spain because our businesses cannot deal with a duty-free. The economy of Gibraltar is black money, cheap petrol, cheap alcohol and cheap tobacco. This economy has killed our economy in the Campo of Gibraltar. A lot of people are forced to get involved with drugs and tobacco dealing because no business can be competitive with a duty-free in front of your house! Gibraltar is a thick tick for us. This centenary problem can get resolve with a bilateral soberanity and fair taxation with the rest of our country.

They should have fought the British instead of fighting each other.
