Gibraltar in the 1970's. Enhanced Super 8. Border closed. Great music and captions.

It's incredible how different Gibraltar looked back then, underdeveloped compared to now. I've lived here for almost 29 years and it's changed completely.

Yes, when I watch modern videos, it looks like a completely different place, not at all the cut off colony it was.

Thanks Arai. I should have lots more films taken over the years that are interesting and can be improved with AI. If you want to be sure to know about new videos like this, please consider subscribing. Try out some of my other videos as well, they are different, but I use the best music I can find and they mostly have interesting comments about the places in the videos

Thanks very much for your comment, and very sorry for your wife's passing. I do have an audio recording I took on the 1980 holiday as well - not great quality, but it does take you back to that time - I haven't listened to it in years, but if I remember it right, I recorded sounds in town, on the trip to Tangier and some radio bits, including the nice "This is Radio Gibraltar" jingle (which for all I know might still be the same now!). If you'd find it interesting, I could WeTransfer it to you.

thank you for this, i have just been to Gib with my family (did some work there in 2019 and wanted to take my family over, we stayed at Catalan Ba, was so lovely to see how it looked in 78. please is so very different now. sadly so many high-rise buildings now, but I guess that was inevitable, lots more land has been reclaimed from the see since your filming. I really enjoyed watching and I imaged to some time to thank you

Thanks for the comment, it's really nice to hear from people who've been to places more recently than us about how they've changed. Gib seems to have become a real business centre doesn't it - it was like a sleepy village when we went - not sure if I'd like it as much now.

Wow, this is great! I lived there as a kid in '78-80.

Must have been really interesting then, it felt to us like a cut off part of the world. We were both at college and really poor - Gibraltar was about the only 'abroad' place that was affordable. We went back a 2nd time because we liked it so much the first. We haven't been back since though, but have thought about it. I don't think it will be as interesting now - I think places that aspire to be bigger and brighter are always more interesting than those places that have already got there - like Las Vegas was much more interesting before they started blowing up the older casinos and filling in all the open spaces. And Hong Kong is now so built up that we probably would have a hard time recognising it after only 30 years.

@@timsharp I was between 6 and 8, so my perspective is skewed. But it was my favourite of my dad's postings by far. It was a brilliant place to be a kid, especially with day trips to Tangiers, which I can still smell in my memory! I went back to Gib in 2008, and it was a very different place. The Cold War military presence, obviously now gone, made it feel like a very big barracks with very strong community, now it feels like a novel but slightly soulless place for the well-off. The piazza felt completely different. But these could be the difference between the perspectives of a child and an adult. It's a fascinating place.

Yes, we will have to try to get back again and see the changes for ourselves - I'm sure it will still be interesting, if a lot busier than it was

Can't remember exactly where I was, but I think it was on the road towards the Rock Hotel, just past the cable car

Gibraltar is now unrecognisable, the tunnel has now been built and it should open by this year.

Yes, when we went in the 70's it was like a little cut off enclave, it probably feels completely different now. We used to listed to Radio Gibraltar and read the Gibraltar Chronicle which I believe was only 6 pages then. I'd like to go back again.

@@timsharp GBC and the Chronicle are still around but in tune with the 21st century. Just check the GBC RU-vid channel. Gib has become a new Monaco, lots of infrastructure developments have happened since the opening of the border in 1982.

@@jonathanfreyone526 Hopefully it's still keeping it's historical places. I notice that the Tangier ferry doesn't seem to run anymore, suppose that was only profitable when the border was closed. And thanks for commenting by the way!

I'd love to go back and see for myself. We nearly went this winter, but ended up going to Center Parcs as it was cheaper! I think I'll feel the same way as you. I also think going back to Singapore and Hong Kong (we went in 1989 and 1990) will give the same feelings. The sleepy feeling Gibraltar had then I guess is just a memory now. It's sad really how places can be backwaters for many years then suddenly get discovered and taken over - look at Miami Beach, when we went there first time in 1988 it was an interesting but very faded place, then it became trendy and the whole feel of the place has changed.

As a tourist (not a resident) I would much prefere the border being closed. The traffic around gibraltar is awfull.

I can imagine. I haven't been back since 1979 so it will seem like a different place when we finally return
