@JackDespero
@JackDespero Год назад
The problem is that any form of moving Gibraltar towards the EU, is seeing by the UK government as moving it towards Spain. But the thing is that there is no alternative. Spain is not going to allow the UK to have their cake and eat it. If the UK wants freedom of movement in Gibraltar, then it cannot become a free entry way into the EU by British people. And since Spain is the one sponsoring Gibraltar into Schengen, it is thus its responsability to check passports and the border. There is no way that a government has a responsability to do that, and then allows other government to do it themselves, especially when Gibraltar is famous for having been both a tax haven and a contraband haven for decades. I mean, the Spanish government unilaterally decided to extend healthcare for Gibraltarians for two extra years, as a sign of good will, and the UK did nothing to reciprocate that. The UK needs first to understand what they want, and then explain it to the rest of us, because they are always asking for contradictory things, like in the case of NI.

The UK government have their hands tied, it is not up to them what happens in our country it is up to the government of Gibraltar which is recognised as the legitimate voice of Gibraltar by the UK since 2006. The UK is down as the party negotiating the agreement as the Spanish do not recognise our government. Spanish boots on the ground here is very politically sensitive especially when you realise those in their 50s/60's spent most of their youth behind a border closed by Franco many separated from family members who lived on the other side of that border. People in the UK should really forget about including Gibraltar in their Brexit argument and should definitely not draw their own conclusions regarding the vote which may I remind you was for the UK to stay in Europe and the option of Gibraltar being part of Europe which involved any form of rule from Madrid would be firmly rejected

That’s not the case any more since Brexit. The removal of the right to healthcare in Spain has lead to huge numbers of retired Brits who lived in Spain having to move back to the UK, thereby putting even greater demand on the NHS. Prior to Brexit they were entitled to healthcare in Spain which the UK then paid for. Spanish healthcare is generally of at least equal quality as that available in the UK but costs less, so pre-Brexit this actually saved the UK money.

Don't forget how much they pollute due to completely ignoring any regulation for boat repair. And I mean of both EU and UK. The reason their naval industry even exists is due to their "crown territory" status allowing them to ignore that. To note how bad this is for Spain. La Linea is THE municipality with the highest environmental taxes in the country, by a very wide margin, because, being Gibraltar's border, they have to clean that up. Yeah they're really not happy about Gibraltar, at all. Also note that the transit of boats in clearly illegal state to gibraltar from UK is the reason both Spain and Portugal have had multiple environmental disasters on their waters, most notably the Prestige. So the Galicians are also not happy.

the Gibraltar airport is in Spanish territory. The border of the original treaty was not respected and UK take advantage of the weakness of Spain during the Spanish civil war seizing more territory and violating the original teatry. What about that. Part of Gibraltar is spanish territory seized by Churchill. Also the original treaty specifies very clearly that the waters around Gibraltar are all Spanish and this has not been respected either, and UK claims that the waters are theirs, when it is very clearly wrote in the original Utrech treaty. For starting UK could respect what they signed.

Local people who lived there are considered Cypriots and as such come under Cypriot and European law and can move in and out of the territory, however members of the Defence Forces and their families are considered British and are under British military rules. Just ignoring Gibraltars opinion and right? Respectfully, Its not that simple. Furthermore, Uk cannot simply give away Gibraltar as they made it so that Gibraltar must be included in any sovreignty talks when we created our own constitution and begun our own government. Also, we have survived 14 seiges and have gone through a 13 year border closure durign Franco's dictatorship. it would be a big blow, but we can survive. Finally Gibraltarians do not want to be Spanish, especiall due to history and the fact that La Linea almost seems abandoned by the government, with unemployment (which is also why many spaniards work in gib). I bet a deal would be hammered out within a month. 😉 If Spain wanted they could speed up the process if it were a big enough issue for them. If negotiations are taking this long though, neither side seems to be too worried about it from an outsider's perspective of both countries. I'm just saying Spain likely has the upper hand here in negotiations. I'm not seriously saying that Spain should act out this way. I'm just saying in a roundabout way it can't be that pressing of an issue in terms of a timetable to get a deal done quickly.

@@karLcx Correct! And that is why the EU waits for a decision by Gibraltar in which direction it will go. In full freedom and democracy the UK decided to leave the EU, and that's okay. This decision has severe consequences for a number of areas like NI and Gibraltar. Strangely you do not appeal on freedom and democracy within the UK when it became clear that nor NI, nor Gibraltar, nor Scotland, nor London, wanted to leave, and these areas pointed out the problems they would face in economical and practical ways. The EU does not involve in internal affairs of member states, nor in those of former members. Only when it involves matters and conditions of their membership, or treaties that involve the EU explicitly. For Northern Ireland a treaty was made that would open the border between ROI and UK as part of the Good Friday Agreement. For Gibraltar a treaty was made that would open the border between Gibraltar and Spain, as part of entree conditions for Spain. Consequences are that both borders cannot be closed by either side. Consequences are as well that borders would be drawn between NI or Gibraltar and the other parts of the UK when the UK left the EU. Both ROI and Spain are bound to these treaties as well as the UK and EU, and all others involved. This means that the ROI is involved when the status of NI changes. This means that Spain is involved when the status of Gibraltar changes. Both have the right to block any action by the EU or others.

@@dutchman7623 freedom and democracy within the UK isn't something that keeps me awake at night. it has it's failings but i don't live in the uk. they'll do what they're going to do. this is all sound in theory, but spain cannot be trusted to not abuse the process in an attempt to push and shove traction on the sovereignty issue. the entire EU border should be an EU responsibility, imo. if spain was for the first time in their history willing to behave in good faith and negotiate as a partner on an equitable border situation to create a normal border (apparently not in their political interests) then the negotiations would have been quick and simple and the border fence might not even be necessary.
