At first, 1958 didn't seem to be a good year for Gibson. Les Paul sales were slow, and Ted McCarty's attempt to compete with the Stratocaster by introducing some futuristic body shapes fell flat. After shipping only around 100 total of these odd-shaped guitars in '58, those original Korina Explorers and Flying Vs are now among the most sought-after, and most valuable guitars on the planet.
After top players like Albert King, Dave Davies and Jimi Hendrix were seen using the Flying V, by the late '60s there was high demand for these guitars. But even as Gibson released new models of the V, they weren't doing Korina bodies anymore. The handful that existed from the first run in 1958 sold for exorbitant amounts, and most guitarists resigned themselves to the fact that they would never get a real Korina V in their hands.
Gibson Custom Shop comes to the rescue with these historic 1958 reissues. Now you can experience the magic of these Korina beauties for yourself.
