Came to own a 99 honeyburst classic! Its the best guitar I own - single piece of mahogany for the neck and body respectively, amazingly smooth slim taper d shape neck, lovely sound unplugged. The pickups were swapped to the duncan 59 neck/jb bridge and I have no complaints. Having played the current standards, classics, traditionals and customs, I would still choose the 99 classic every time.

Correct! Word is that unscrupulous dealers were swapping out the truss rod covers and pickguards and then charging a custom shop premium on these. And if I’m being honest, those guitars were THAT good! Of course ymmv on the stock ceramic pickups. I like them though.

I was able to snag a 2022 blem for $2049, took some metal polish to the factory polishing oversight, and with very little effort it polished right out. Nice little money savings. At first I thought it was more dynamic and toneful than my awesome 2019 Standard, but after the initial honeymoon has gone by, I'm totally in the middle. I like one for some things, and the other for other things. That said, I'm not an exclusive LP guy. Neck/back issues drive me to my SGs for longer sessions, or at least more rotation between them.

I'd like to try an old classic... looks nice. I just bought a new classic. I've had several Les Paul's with different pickups...490's, BB pros, and 61 classic. All good pickups for different reasons. I lean towards the 61's because they are clearer and brighter than almost any other Gibson pickups I've tried...yet they still are warm... they are absolutely amazing. I see over time a lot of companies start to cut costs by making guitars that don't have one piece bodies, etc... maybe you got more bang for your buck with the old one with one piece body and flame top. With that said the new one is still epic...mine is perfect. Though I love custom shops, modern LPs, etc... after owning the new classic I don't feel I will ever drool over another LP again. For me the classic is perfect and as good as it gets in terms of tone, playability, quality, etc.. I think the older classic is more like a traditional today... not really same guitar. The new classics are more like the LP modern with different pickups and color options... but exact same wiring.

I will say old is better, that's the superstition. The most important thing for me is the sound and beauty. If both old and new are same price, I can choose old one. In Japan recently, the price of the Yamano age Classic is increasing lol. Because the Yamano inspection was amazing. Last month I got plain top Classic. Non coil tap and phase switch, I don't need them. With Glover locking rotomatics, beautiful grain and nine hole weight relief. Awesome sound. The best weight is 4,3㎏ for me. Of course I tried many Classics and compared. I got the best Gibson Les Paul Classic for me, of course new. Tanks.

Funny thing about my '22 Classic is that it is at least as heavy as my '19 Standard! Agree with you on the PP pots. I don't use them and forget they're there. If ever any one of my pots go bad, I'll chuck the pcb controls and convert the whole thing into regular wiring.
@voxwah75
@voxwah75 10 месяцев назад
One piece body is highly unlikely, and also not wise to do because of the bulging. The holy grail in bodies is a mirrored 2 piece. The fact that 1989-1996 (1997-1999 you had to be lucky) was called the good wood era is because you really needed a close look to see the 'parts of the body'. I once saw a 2005 Explorer later on made out of 7 totally different colouring pieces with a transparant finish, it really was a curse for the eye. It got better after 2012 but still isn't at the good wood level of the 90's.

I recently bought second hand what was advertised as a 92 classic plus. I checked the SN and under the pickups and it all checks out correctly. My main concern was that it lacked the “classic” truss rod cover. Was just blank. Maybe someone swapped it out at some point in the last 30 years. But absolutely love the guitar and it’s in beautiful shape. And I felt like the $1600 I paid for it was a steal.
@RRoy83

@@jasonburks8125 The guy kind of explained the "Les Paul Model" thing on the headstock weird. What was happening was dealers were taking off those "Classic" truss rod covers off and selling the classics as the more expensive Reissues at the time (now known as the "pre historic" reissues) After 95 they changed the headstocks to say "Les Paul Classic" in print. That is why alot of those classic truss rod covers went missing though
