Gibson Les Paul vs Yamaha Revstar - Which is the One to Buy?

For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ My feeling was that the Yamaha Revstar is quite similar to a Gibson Les Paul, with a few positive refinements in terms of weight and playability that I thought might make it worth a comparison....Here's that. Are new Gibsons still any good?

Odd choice to put SS frets on the middle model but not locking tuners. Perhaps an easy enough mod to make but even if they built the standard to a price point they could have stuck them on the professional model. Not the least because the professional model has little or nothing tangible to set it apart from the standard.

It would be more fair comparison if the Revstar was with humbuckers and not P90S, apart from that I think that the p90s compliment really nicely your style of playing, nice clarity and articulation :)

Love love love this video. Not sure about these things, but to me it would make better sense to compare a LES PAUL with P90s to a Revstar with P90s and a LES PAUL with Humbuckers with the Revstar with Humbuckers. The Revstar with Humbuckers definitely has a warmer tone. There I said it. haha. My next guitar will probably be the Revstar with the Humbuckers. I just can't find one to try out. Just get a twin humbucker model and slap in a humbucker sized P90. Even P-Rails with the special frame to select between humbucker series/parallel, single, p90 would work if you don't mind its look. OR get a p90 sized dimarzio super distortion (they have them) and slap it in a p90 revstar. Game over.

@@andreil1234 Yes and no. The sound is not totally the same, plus the aesthetic is a big part of it. Yamaha already makes at least 2 models of their Pacifica line in that same configuration, so it shouldn't be a stretch. It's not everyones cup of tea, but with multiple brands offering the soapbar/HB configuration, it must be popular enough.

I have a Les Paul Tribute with missing Link Audio pick ups in it, and I love the Tribute with those PU's installed. A different, warmer Tone Monster through the same tube amps. Both of your guitars sounded amazing (great playing) but I kinda liked the tones from the Les Paul a tad bit better. I like warmer tones though. Have a revstar standard with P90s, it's ridiculously good and addictive. For the money it's ridiculous I don't think anything compares. I have been tempted by the top tier but I'm not sure a couple of carbon fibre rods in the body are enough to justify the extra outlay. I think the P90s have become my favourite pickup. @andreil1234
@andreil1234 2 года назад
@@johnnathancordy I guess they still apply more carefoul sourcing on the materials for their MIJ stuff, as well as that IRA treatment that's supposed to make them feel more broken in / relaxed / played. Pickups and hardware or electronics do not seem different, so it must be the overall materials quality and the craftmanship plus that spa treatment of theirs. I too am insterested if you find some details since this time around the price gap is quite huge for what apparently isn't that much of a difference. The indonesian made guitars are notorious for their often not quite dry wood and sometimes iffy finish colors and layers, but apart from the fact I've seen two Revstars with dead notes (G octave thereabouts on actually both) to me they seem more or less the same as PRS SE. On the other hand I've also seen dirt cheap older japonese guitars made of plywood that felt really better to play and hond than guitars ten times their price :) Who knows.

Great playing! Well, I was expecting this to be a comparison between a humbucker equipped Revstal and a Paul. That seems to be the configuration anybody looking for a "working man's Les Paul" would go for, no? Also, I may have missed it, but I didn't hear you mention price. You can get the high end Made in Japan Rev for 2000$, but the 800$ certainly seems up to any task you can throw at it. You can't find a decent Gibson for that price, even used. I think when all is said and done, the main thing the Gibson still has going for it is that it's so darn pretty.

However, I did try a Revstar the other day in a music store. The $1000 Canadian Dollar Revstar was not that great (could have been the set up though), but the $2500 version was really nice. The fretboard was so nice. Just wondering which one you have? The expensive version or cheaper version?

My steady girlfriend is my Gibson Les Paul Custom Axcess w Floyd Rose , I don't think she will get too jealous if I play around with the Revstar . The Axcess is built to give axcess to the higher notes and with the Silver Burst it pretty much rules my entire collection , BUT I still play the others a lot . Just returned the RSS02t in Sunset Burst for a RSS20 in Flash Green. I like the humbuckers more, even though the Sunset Burst and the tailpiece on the 02T were totally pissa. I had an issue that I fixed with the RSS20; The signal was completely cutting out intermittently. It turned out to be that the factory used shielding paint in the tight output jack hole and because it's so tight in there, if the jack isn't positioned just right on the jack plate, the signal can short out on the paint (that's why I hate shielding paint). I immediately threw out the cheap Korean single-sprung jack, removed what shielding paint I could with sandpaper, lined the jack hole with electrical tape and installed a Switchcraft #11 jack. I used heat shrink on the solder connections. Problem solved.

Just got myself a Gibson Les Paul Standard 60s Faded which I like very much. I prefer the satin finish and the sound of the 60s Burstbucker over that of the 50s Burstbucker 1 and 2; it is much clearer and thus gives you more options with the tone controls. This being said, I would never buy a Gibson without trying it first, even though the quality control is supposedly better nowadays. I do love my new Les Paul, but I must admit that the attention to detail is lacking compared to other less costly instruments like my Godin Summit Classic Convertible Gold HG; it is night and day. For the same attention to detail, would I need to spend 5K for a Custom Shop or more for a Murphy Lab? It does not make any sense. After playing my brother in law's Gibson SG I wanted a new humbucker guitar and after watching many reviews about the Revstar Standard I went ahead and bought one with the humbuckers. The fit and finish is great however my feelings about the sound are still pending. The Revstar sounds somehow more robotic than the Les Paul's creamy heavy tones. Neither guitar sounds muddy if the pickup height is set correctly. If you are trying to get a Les Paul sound out of the Revstar I haven't found it. But that doesn't mean it isn't a great playing guitar and a better feeling guitar than the Les Paul. The gibson Les Paul is legendary for a reason, that classic rich dark creamy rock sound only seems to come from some Les Paul's if you are lucky enough to get a good one. I am sure I will find a tone that I like on my Revstar with more messing around.

I have become a big fan of Yamaha when I bough my fist Pacifica in GC 2015?. Now I have settled on the Pacifica 212 VFM and the Revstar RS620, I don't have any newer Yam models. I think both Yamaha's are fantastic! Newer Epiphone not so much and they are not transparent at all - hiding production from the public is shameful.😁

I was wondering the same thing. That is if the Revstar was in the same ball park of a les Paul standard. I don’t think you can go wrong with either guitar. I would like to see standard with humbuckers and see how they compare. But, I almost always find my way back to telecaster. Great Video! Thanks John!

What do you think would be better…I’m looking for a second guitar that would compliment my strat best. Been thinking Les Paul or the Revstar and every other day a 335 hahaha.

I went to a store and ask about the revstar...They told me when they first brought revstar in their store...the guitar didn't even need to adjust or set up anything... ready to play...i believe Yamaha is great company.

Dude! You’ve got the high end Japanese made RevStar Pro to compare that Gibson to. There is no comparison! Gibson could never match the sheer quality of a Japanese made Yamaha because even their American made LPs quality has turned to shit over the last 20yrs! Gibson has got to the point where they charge you way more for way less in return!

I’m in between revstar humbucker or p90.. do the p90 have 60cycle hum noise issue as everybody talk about?

This is exactly what I was looking for. Great video. Now the big question: which rev do I get... p90s or humbucker? Could be a nice comparison to do for your next video 😉

I would choose Revstar over LesPaul any day and every day. I played a lot of LPs and somehow I am not a great fan of it. LP has a beautiful warmer and fuller tone, but the instrument's weight makes it not playable for a long time. I do not want to pick up my LPs to play them because of the heavyweight. Revs solves that. In addition, the p90s are very underrated.

Great review !! Do you fell some fret scratchiness when bending, even though they are MIJ SS frets ? I do, and it's the one deception about my rsp02T

@@benallmark9671 well it's better, but not the glassy effect I'm expecting ...which is rare to obtain to be honest (only encounterd this on a PRS in store)

Yamaha should replace the tone push/pull with a concentric tone control so you could separately adjust the tone on both pickups.

3 points i would make 1. For me between these, it is the LP all day every day. There is a midrange that the Revstar doesnt quite have (i get this is not exactly apples for apples with P90s and buckers) I would really like to try a Rev though and i expect i would really like it, but being of the vintage that grew up on a steady diet of Led Zep and the like from that era it just sounds and looks so cool. 2. John i cant recall if you have covered this on other vids, but does your LP have 50’s wiring or modern? i really think 50’s wiring offers a really good range of tones once you get used to how the controls interact, and then paired with perhaps some lower output PAFs would probably reduce some of the muddiness you mention, worth a look at ‘cause that LP of yours is killer. 3. Yes Gibson is still making some great guitars, sure they have made some really poor ‘marketing’ decisions in the last few years and became an easy (possibly somewhat deserved) target for haters (i’m sure the quality control complaints are not without some basis either) but i have a 2021 60’s Standard LP that straight out of the box is hands down one of the best playing guitars i’ve ever seen (maybe i got lucky?)

I like having a Les Paul because it's the sound on the records. But it would be frustrating to me as a primary guitar. I'd rather have a modern design, still yet to play a revstar but I do like my DGT a lot. As you get towards the mid 00s you start to lose the quality improvements that the 90s had. Quality today is... Oof. I can't live with their electronics and so I would have to factor a harness and pickups into the purchase price. Oh and completely unrelated but I just added the pink Suhr Mateus Asato SIG strat to my collection. I think you'd enjoy it but I do know Suhrs are hard to track down and probably impossible to borrow.

Gibson CS making the best guitars they ever have these days but the prices are disconnected from what you get. Those Murphy guitars are as much as a Bartlett or a Knaggs or Yaron and you're never gonna convince me that site unseen I should buy a Gibson over one of those
